How yall like him after two games?
yeah Cutino comes to mind for me as well. Very much a chucker thats for sure. Took more shots than any starter on the court vs. Grizzlies without the % to backup the reasoning.
I just hope we don't get into a Beno Udrih-type situation with him (we acquired Udrih at the final year of his contract and signed him to that five year deal three years ago after he played well for us at the latter half of that season). Especially since I think Beno, at least when motivated, as more all-around talent (will rack up big game assists occasionally and is a money mid-range shooter). I can envision Thornton as a spot-up guy for us off Tyreke D and Ks and someone who can possibly create shots when the offense bogs down, but that's one of the more common attributes you'd find among 6'2"-6'4" undersized SGs--it's not a rare commodity. The fear is that he gets into a huge scoring binge at the latter half while we continue to lose games, develops a inflated view of his offensive game, invokes his age and has his agent bring up his "good" rookie year so that he can command money/years in excess. He's definitely not worth that. But as that stopgap, he's ok for the time being.
It's really not up to his agent, though. If they can find another team to offer him a deal more than we do, we can still match. If they don't, the ball's entirely in our court.
At this time, only a year and a half into his career, I'm going to look more at what he can do, instead of what he can't do. What he can do is score. To imply that finding SG's that can score with efficiency are a dime a dozen, then I ask, why don't we have one on our roster? When were getting torched by one of those dime a dozen guys, how many of you say, well yeah, he's killing us, but he doesn't play defense. Personally, at the moment, I'm wishing the bastard was on our team.
I watch a lot of college basketball, and the good players, in general, fall into two groups. You have the good defensive players, and you have the good offnesive players. If you can find a player thats good at both ends of the floor, then you've probably got a future star. For the most part you pick what your need is. But always remember, the team that puts the ball into the basket the most times always wins. That means someone has to do it. That means you need scorers.
Hopefully if you aquire a young player that can score the ball, especially in isolation, which is harder to find, you hope he can learn to play defense. Durant wasn't a very good defender when he was drafted. Today he's pretty good defender. I liked Thornton in college. He has quite a few skills. He handles the ball well. Not great, but well. His passing could improve. He can create his own shot, which is a necessity sometimes. He uses screens well. And he's a good shooter. He has good lateral movement, which should lend itself to good defense. Defensively his biggest defecit is his height. Some of the taller SG's can elevate and shoot over him. But then BJax used to guard SG's on occasion and he had a similar problem. Of course BJax just got into their shorts.
If the price is right, I'd like to keep both Taylor and Thornton. Both are similar, but also different, and I like that. Not one size fits all, so its nice to have different styles to throw out there. Both are also young. All we need to do then is trade for Blake Griffin and sign Chris Paul, and were off and running. Yeah, yeah, I know, not going to happen..
I like Thornton but think we still don't have the 2nd guard spot filled with a starter. That's for the draft, I suspect. We get ourselves a starting guard, SF or PF in the draft.
Irving, Barnes, or Sullinger or a Jones? Whatever. That's for the draft.
Do I like Thornton? Can a woodchuck chuck wood?
At this time, only a year and a half into his career, I'm going to look more at what he can do, instead of what he can't do.
... is a beast/someone i would like to see starting over beno when reke comes back since he actually knows how to play defense.
Thornton over Beno starting? Don't see it. Fact is the team needs Beno starting no matter who else starts. Beno is the one last night who gave Thornton the chance to look good, and Beno looked good too. Let's let weeds grow a little taller before we crown Thornton or dethrone Beno.
