Actually my impression of OJ Mayo since he entered the league is that he's just been a very talented role player. Dogged defender, good shooter, can handle the ball. He kind of deferred to Gay and Randolph and was the third leading scorer on Memphis last year.
Maybe he wants to move onto bigger things, but so far he's played like a young Joe Dumars. Just doing things to help the team win. I think he'd be PERFECT next to Tyreke.
However, the owner just made a big thing about how they were trying to trade for Chris Paul, but that OJ Mayo was absolutely not part of the package. So if they're making a big deal about not trading him for Chris Paul, then I don't think they'll take JT.
Dogged defender? Surely you jest?
That team is a lot worse defensively with on the floor than off. Dipping into a set of stats I really don't like to use as a rule, according to 82games they were 3.5pts better on defense with him on the bench last year, and a fairly astounding 9.1pts better on defense wihtout him last year. Opposing PERs and the rest of that "advanced stats" junk are also high (17.9PER).
I remain confused by what his jockers see in him, other than the college hype. He's basically a short tweener jumpshooter who doesn't have a defensive position in the NBA. Kevin used to light him up like a Christmas tree. Put him in the right setting and could he maybe score 20? Yeah, probably. But right now they would be classic completely irrelevant SG points. He was probably the 4th best player on that team last year, and he didn't get any better at ANYTHING. I would go so far as to say the primary reason I have not compeltely written him off as just a long term menaingless points go inthe NBA is precisely because of the vigor of his jockers. I hate to comoe down on the wrong side of one of these things and completely write somebody off who is going to turn out to be good. But I await, and seriously await, being remotely impressed. Undersized guys who ist like to pull up and chuck jumpers are not hard to find in this (or any other league).
Difference between Redick and Mayo in your opinion?
I thought we already proved that to 20+ pt scorers can't exist next to each other.......did people forget about Martin? Failed experiment.

Ok, just because Martin did not want to play send fiddle to a rookie does not mean you can't have two prolific scorers in the back court. History seems to back up you can't have two ball dominant creators in the back court, although that starts to fall apart when you add SF into the mix. However, a creater and a great shooter can work.
History actually argues pretty heavily against ANY two great scorers together in the backcourt. They share the smae space, and I think end up freezing out the rest of the team while chucking up perimeter shots. There have only been a handful of 20pt/20pt scoring backcourts, and they have never lasted, and never won.
But really, history aside, its very hard to see any argument where this team, with scorers all over the lineup, one or potentially two major stars, multiple double figure scoring types off the bench etc. would need a major scorer at SG. He would jsut be stealing points/shots away from others. A shooting roleplyer = sure, but not a shooting scorer. With Donte/Casspi likely coming on, Reke increasing his dominance, and now potentially a major low post center, 10-12 pts is probably all you really need out of that SG position.
So...basically we need a new Doug Christie?

To clarify, I don't think "great scorer" means someone scores 20 points per game. Take Boston for example, the first year they had the Big 3, I still consider that Ray Allen was a great scorer. However, he only scored 18 a game. The year before on Seattle he scored 26 a game. Great team players care more about winning than individual stats. For that reason, you'll have trouble finding many great teams with 2 scorers at the 1-2-3 averaging more than 20 a game, although that doesn't mean they weren't great scorers who could not have averaged 20-25 individually if you placed them on a bad team.
With that said, I agree with you on what the Kings need. We really just need a role player next to Reke who can shoot 3s, play D and occasionally drive to keep the D honest. A Doug Christie clone would be perfect.
Hmmm...but the last Boston Celtics champion was....Rome wasn't built in a day.
