The Sweet Science

Give me an NBA comp here. Is this like LeBron playing a D2 kid 1on1?

Pretty good comp. Except the D2 Kid is entitled as hell, a major following, and gets whatever he wants.

Jake has *some* skills and could actually possibly rise the ranks if he did things right. But instead he fights MMA guys who can’t strike, dudes in different weight classes, or washed up husks.

Before this happened he was scheduled he was supposed to fight another talented fighter in Gervonta Davis… but that fighter lives in the 128 pound weight class. lol

In addition to what @SLAB said, the money involved in these Paul fights is obscene leading to plenty of speculation that he is giving these guys a big pay day to take a dive or carry him the distance, this is the first time I've seen his opponent actually try to knock him out and welp. The announcers were kind of like "he was trying to knock him out from the first round and just got in his head" but I think the reality is they had a gentlemen's agreement to go 5 or more rounds.

On the flip side though, the undercards of the Paul specials is generally pretty good and for a sport that kind of fell off in favor of MMA, I think its a good thing to get the spectacle back.

I was entertained. I think Paul knew if they had another Tyson like fight, he'd be struggling to garner much interest moving forward.

The look on his face after he took that shot was pretty funny. It was like that punch turned him into a fan boy.

this has got to stop with these influencers fighting pro boxers, making a mockery of the sweet science
At ~$50,000,000 per fight, this is a pretty good deal for the influencers.

These people don't process shame in quite the same way as the average guy.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people would be ok with an exchange rate of 10 million bucks per punch

Have you seen that game back in January 2019 where LaMelo's Spire Academy humiliated Julian Newman's Downey Christian team?

sure, influencers make out like bandits but at what cost to the sport? the only legit fights that are being made are by Turki and Riyadh Season. Although Benn vs Conner was solid

I don't think the sport of boxing has anything to lose; has the sport of boxing ever operated with genuine competitive integrity? Is there even a plausible fantasy where that could happen?

there is integrity to be had among certain fighters and then when you put WWE-like fights out there to promote a brand name or to increase viewership well you get the product you see here. the sport would be just fine without these type of fights

As a "product", I think this was pretty successful. A lot of that is on the Pauls being excellent promoters. Regardless of competitive integrity, the sheer spectacle of seeing jerks get their faces punched in is always going to be a great draw.

I think the audience that tunes in to watch a pro (eventually) beat up a semi-pro is fundamentally not really interested in high level boxing. Just because it gets more attention, doesn't mean it's stealing attention from serious competition.

I don't think freak show fights really do anything to hurt integrity unless they're fixed like the Tyson fight was.

No one stopped watching the UFC because James Toney fought Randy Couture or CM Punk got beat up by whoever. They stopped watching because the sport stopped developing stars and to a lesser extent became a monopoly with the UFC pretty much being the only big promotion left. The allure of a champion in a different promotion coming over to see what they could do in the UFC is now gone and with it has gone a lot of the intrigue.
