BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics have agreed to terms with captain Paul Pierce on a deal that could keep the MVP of their 2008 title run with the team for another four seasons

Terms of the contract were not immediately available. The Boston Herald, which first reported on the deal, says Pierce would get $61 million over four years, with a mutual option for the fourth year

Suns supposedly gave Hakim Warrick 4 yrs and 18 mil, also with the Frye deal on deck this might signify the end of Amare in Phx. How good will that be for us to have to just deal with Nash and JUST 3 bombs from the other guys? Amare used to kill us haha

I read a post here a couple weeks ago addressing the benefits of a hard cap, etc, and the example given was how it would prevent the Lakers from signing Piece X, Y, or Z.

I was arguing about benefits of hard cap, but I wasn't saying that keeping the Lakers from signing players was a benefit. I was saying that a hard cap would change the landscape of the NBA, and used the Lakers trades and signings as an example. Just in response to any who say that a hard cap wouldn't impact the big market teams.

It's usually the small market teams that are killing the golden goose with these ASININE signings. What the hell... When we are staring at a season long lockout for lawyers to save these moronic owners and GMs from themselves, it's not going to be because of LA.

A lot of the MLE signings are "try to keep up" signings. The others might feel like their hands are forced in order to keep any talent that they do have, especially with so many teams having considerable cap space this year. Not that I'm defending the Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson deals, as they've been reported. Both will be obscenely overpaid. But teams like the Lakers (and others, it's not just them) have contributed their fair share to the labor angst that we will see soon.

Farmar is definitely gone. I think Fisher depends solely on whether he's willing to come down from his 5 million/yr price range to about half that. He probably will.

Solid signing by the Lakers. Blake provides pretty much exactly what they lack at the PG position.

Lakers sign Steve Blake for 4/16M. Not too bad a value.

I suppose that means Mike Miller is not signing with them...

According to Portland fans he isnt that great. Strictly looking at stats I'd say he's solid, and an upgrade from Fish (who sucks until a game is on the line, then all of a sudden he turns into Robert Horry). I love how every team in the league has to overpay, but players give fLakers the discount. Friggin LA POS bandwagon team. Cant wait until Cuz eats Pau Gasol. /endrant

Also, re: Warrick on the Suns. Watch Nash turn him into a 20/10 big.

Are you flipping kidding me...Amir Johnson gets 5 yr/$34 million!?! Unreal!!! 6.2 pts per game is his high!! Okay, so he's sliced bread I guess since Bosh is leaving, but is he really THAT good??

He's servicable.. can hit the open shot, distribute a bit...

bad defender and choker though...

Yeah, very good move by Kupchak, solid PG that provides Fisher much needed rest.

My thoughs on the Free agency bonanza so far:

Steve Blake is a very quality signing for the Lakers. As previously mentioned, he could have gotten a bigger offer somewhere but hey, players give LA a discount. I think Lakers just got better.

That Amir Johnson guy getting a contract that big is crazy. Raptors are really doomed as long as Colengelo is running the show up north.

Oh, and if Lebron, Wade, and Bosh play together, then that's it. The NBA will get owned. I'd like to see them crush the lakers though.

if the lakers lose farmar and at the sametime shannon brown isnt resigned they will have a pretty old backcourt of fish and blake. its going to be difficult for both those guys in the long run and defensively will they be able to keep up..

On the other side of things, we ended up hating the size of Webber's and Bibby's deals, but boy were Kings fans relieved we didn't lose them in free agency at the time. We were especially sweating out the resigning of Webber. When its time to resign Evans, we'll be sweating out again, if he turns into the player we're hoping he'll be. Just like Cleveland fans right now. :(

Edit: Remember the only teams that can use the MLE or LLE(?) are teams that are over the salary cap.

we did end up hating their deals, but we may have loved Webber's until the end had he not blown out his knee. Bibby was probably too high - being paid like a #1 when he was a clear #2. Again, this is the problem with today's NBA.

A little off topic, but did anybody notice on the Official NBA free agent tracker that Bobby Jackson is listed as a free agent lol. I got a laugh out of that.

Get this...Joe Johnson says he's still undecided about taking $20 million a year, says he'll make a decision in the next 24 hrs...wow, just wow!:D

The problem is that Blake is competent on the other end of the floor. Shooting 3s and being able to make inlet passes to the bigs, which Farmar, Brown, and Fisher are utterly worthless at. Blake has traditional 1 skills. I'd like to get Brown back on the cheap if possible as someone who can ride other 1s and 2s upcourt. Other than that, I'm thrilled we didn't pick up another SG who has to be crammed into the mold of a point. You know your point corps is lacking when Kobe is the most skilled passing guard on the team.

There are rumors of three-way trade discussions among Golden State, Minnesota and New York, in which Al Jefferson would be sent to the Warriors, Lee to the Timberwolves, and Monta Ellis to the Knicks.

Lee visited Minnesota on Saturday but the team holds only $7 million of salary-cap space which means that Lee would be looking for a sign-and-trade to get him to the Wolves at a contract nearer to his market value.

I don't understand this for the Wolves. Why trade Jefferson for Lee? Lee may be an even worse fit next to Love than Jefferson was. Lee's a better rebounder, but not near the scorer that Jefferson is, and I'm pretty sure neither of them play any defense.

Definitely like it for the Knicks though. Monta Ellis would be a good fit in D'Antoni's system

Edit: posted this here because I didn't wanna make a new thread for just this, and because Lee's a free agent

Joe Johnson at $119 million for 6 years is confirmed. Atlanta better make their playoff run now because they're gonna be saddled with his bloated contract and declining production in a few years.

I like Johnson as a player and think he would be a nice 2nd or 3rd best player on a good team. But getting a max deal is a mistake IMO. He is not a player that can carry a team to a championship.

Congratulations Atlanta, you just locked yourself in for a first round playoff exit the next six years!
