Oh I just love it when "bad" luck happens around here because so many of you show your true self-hate bias. When the leap to negative conclusions is just a bit shorter, the masses begin to jump.
We are by far the luckiest team re: draft/lottery probably in the last 10 years.
How the hell do you snag the best player in the draft two years in a row? Seriously.

best player 2 years in a row? with luck ON our side, the kings would have blake griffin and john wall. i love evans and cousins on this team and all, but i wouldnt say they were the best. they were just great picks and steals at our position in the draft. petrie is a magician at finding talent with the draft position he is given but for once i would like to see what he could do with luck on his side.

7th ain't bad place right now. We just snagged the top 2 talents in the last 2 drafts in Evans and Cousins.
So I'll just talk about the good things in picking number 7 compared to number 1.
1.) More players will work out with us. Means more news till draft day. And more topic on Kingsfans.com
2.) Since were not drafting high, the team will have more pressure on signing a more talented vet to lift this team up. It also means bigger chances star players will not worry signing with us due to less worry on being overshadowed by a star(by the press) rookie.
3.) Cousins and Evans leadership roles won't be shaken by a press-pampered top rookie, thus team chemistry would most likely remain good.
4.) Petrie can use his scouting magic wand again.
5.) Less salary for our new rookie would mean much more money to sign vets.
We just got our Kings back, let's continue to support this team even if were picking #7.

And you (Kahn) have a habit of making stupid moves, I guess that makes you stupid.
As being an Israeli, I watched him playing in the Euroleague (Highest level league in Europe) about 4-5 times in each of the last 2 seasons.
Very good prospect, amazing athlete with long hands.Fun to watch, especially when he runs in the open court and finishes with exploding dunks. (Surely this white man can jump).very emotional during games, and at this level it was sometimes translated into "disappearing" for long periods during games .In addition, he struggled against physical-yet-not-very-slow forwards, when they created quite easily the space for shooting comfortably behind his long hands.
His biggest problem is that he can't play PF and yet he has no range. finishes only around the rim(and will not be able to do that in the NBA).once in a while he suddenly shoots 3 three's without missing, and since he doesn't shoots a lot from downtown it "fixes" his %.
can be good at this point only for a team that runs like crazy in offence.

But if you're going to whine about the bad luck, you've got to acknowledge the far BETTER luck that has landed us Evans and Cousins. Yes, there was draft skill... but also luck because of who was drafting in front. I'm not saying the lottery is not rigged, mind you.
But look at the results that have come out of the last two drafts. You simply cannot have asked for better.

Yes thats true in hindsight. I wanted Cousins if we got the #1 well before the draft, over Wall. Both drafts worked out perfectly for us. But we still got screwed 3 years running now. We have been fortunate having Reke/Cousins fall to us, but that has nothing to do with the NBA Lottery screwing teams over year after year. It's a completely broken system, and the worst in american sports.
Hey, on the bright side, since the Jazz (Nets' pick) jumped us in the lottery, we get to pick at #35 instead of #36.

You couldn't ask for a better outcome with Evans and Cousins the last two years, but it still has felt like a sucker-punch the last two (and now make that 3) draft lotteries.
I hate the idea of a draft lottery, but at the same time, unlike the other professional sports, a single player can truly turn around an entire franchise with far more ease than any other sport.
I don't like the lottery, but I also don't think that you should completely give up competitive basketball while teams purposefully throw games to guarantee the worst record and the #1 pick.
Personally, I think they should determine the draft order based on team records sometime in the middle of the season. If by February, you already know that you're the 5th worst team and will therefore be getting the 5th pick in the draft, then you can use the remainder of the season to try and put a good/competitive basketball product on the floor, rather than sitting out key guys who are 'hurt' while losing games.
Or you could set it up so that the 5 worst teams all have a 20% chance of winning the lottery, and the rest of the teams pick in order of their record.
I think there are better ways to do things, but of course this comes from the bitterness of three straight years of disappointment.

As uncia said the problem is tanking for the #1pick, and in no sport is that so tempting, and indeed even beyond tempting, just flat out SMART, as it is in basketball. No other sport where the true LeBron type superstars can singlehandedly be your team, and pre-lottery you'd have to be an idiot to win a game after February if it was going to cost you the chance to draft him.
Its actually the best system in American sports, in that its the ONLY system in American sports. All the other leagues just do it in inverse order, an just count on the much smaller effect of single players, and much greater difficulty identifying the true superstars to deter teams from tanking. The NBA can't afford that luxury without seeing the next year with a great center or LeBron or whoever available in the draft turn into a 10 team race to the bottom compelte with fines from the teams for winning games.
The irony is that its just something that everybody complains about endlessly, bu in compeltely unforcused ways. In any given year half the people will complain about there being a lottery, the other half will say it should just be random picks for the whole league (or just the lottery teams, without weighting). Its too mcuh random. Its too little random. And it almost always depends on where your own team is in the process.
Yeah I think the system as a whole works, it just circumsantially hasn't worked out well for us in recent years. It only marginally discourages tanking at the end of the year as you can still improve your position statistically that way, but what it does do is help eliminate the unfairness of a team deciding Lebron James or whoever is worth throwing away their whole season for by introducing a lot of uncertainty into the works. A draft like this years wouldn't have been a huge problem but how many teams would have been fighting it out for Oden, Lebron, or Wall if the worst record guaranteed you the top pick? We'd be seeing 8 or 9 win seasons with regularity I think.
The only drawback to this current system is when certain teams get consistently screwed and others get rewarded for their incompetancy by being extremely lucky. It's unfortunate because we've seen first hand how consistently bad lottery luck can handicap a franchise, but there just isn't a more fair way to do it. (And really, the lottery itself is not the worst of our bad luck -- we've also had a great draft pick negated by an untimely expansion draft, high lottery picks succomb to injuries self-inflicted and otherwise, our franchise player suffering a career-ending injury in the middle of our best playoff run, a world-wide recession corresponding with an attempted rebuild, and now possibly our last high draft year in awhile decimated by a looming lockout. We're the Kings of bad timing. But we do still have a team!)
