Seems like that will be a very big number... and then if there is a "quarrel" among two posters on the merits of a band.... yikes.

Look now long it is taking just to eliminate Nas without any dissenting opinion.

Some modification is going to be necessary eventually?

I think this could easily last the entire TDOS, which is perfectly fine with me. Once the herd has been culled, I'd love to see some "quarrel" develop about the merits of diverse but talented bands/artists.

There is probably some truth to this, but personally, I'd be astonished if as many as two people who have voted against Nas have heard more than one Nas song, if they've even heard one at all. To paraphrase Kornheiser, they probably wouldn't know who Nas was if he was standing in front of them, wearing a t-shirt that said "I'm Nas" on it.

I've put two -1s on Nas so far, not because I don't know him or his music but for the simple reason that he has no place in the same sentence with Dre or Snoop much less The Beatles and and The Stones.

I will be voting simply for that reason. I don't want Nas eliminated by people who probably (I'm open to correction) haven't listened to him, or at least not enough of him to know what he's like. Considering Nas' body of work, he should be one of the leaders. Of course, I don't expect him to be on this particular site. Nonetheless, I don't want to see him eliminated.

Eh, I think I can have my own opinion about what I do and don't like to listen to. I didn't make up the poll and select the acts, I am just voting on the choices available. If you like Nas, then vote for Nas. If you don't, vote the other way. Why all the complaining????


And yes, I have heard several songs by Nas. I just don't care for it. there is some hip-hop and rap I do like, but this isn't it. The quickest way to get this list shortened and get to the fun part is to get rid of some acts quickly. I am voting for various acts and against one in particular to both promote the ones I like and get rid of ones I don't.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that how this particular game is played? Don't whine because your pet group is "losing", as some of my favorite acts aren't on the list either and you don't hear me complaining, do you?

Edit - I mean entire genres of music aren't represented. Why don't you start one of these for the "urban" music you want represented and see where that one goes?

As a somewhat impartial observer, not having taken the time to vote yet, I think the even bigger issue with the bands/artists that made the list is that all of the "legendary" examples ended up on one side of the spectrum. As an enthusiastic fan of both hip hop and rock (and tons more), there are several groups that I would vote high enough to be in the conversation with some of the rock bands listed, but they didn't make the cut.

Are Run DMC as groundbreaking and important in their genre and to music as a whole as are The Beatles? I think so, but they're not on the list. Is Nas as groundbreaking and important in his genre and to music as a whole as are The Beatles? I don't think so. Nas, for me, is more at the level of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, The Talking Heads, etc. -- all artists that I love and would hate to see voted out, but who ultimately have no business still being around when this thing gets down to Beatles/Marley/Parliament level. Again, to make this a complete list, I think that hip hop needs to be there in the end, but ultimately the artists that could legitimately be seen at that level just aren't here.



As an aside, someone took a point away from Prince? Talk about craziness.

Ouch. That tongue in cheek part is pretty small.

If I were you I'd be satisfied in knowing that almost all decent music from the last century was either created by or at the very least influenced by black people and culture.

The whole thing is kind of funny. I'm going to say this and move on for good. The way I came up with the list is quickly searching on the inter net for lists of the most successful (not influential as some may prefer) bands of the 60's - 00's. I included very arbitrarily the ones that seemed like people around here like. I also went to the above linked Music Draft thread and looked there. At one point I noticed that no hip hop came up. Without bothering to stress, I came up with Nas as he is one the younger kids favorite artists of the genre in my experience. I do not like Nas or have any of his music. I did not like what I found on the inter net and moved on. His effect on the industry however, is pretty solid to say the least. Hello? Outkast won Album of the year, a Grammy for Pete's sake. I guess they are not only not representative, they are not even "rappers". And the complete dismissal of PE is unjust and effed up. They were right behind Boogie Down Productions as being pioneers of conscious and political lyrics in hip hop, one of the true legends. For the record, the hip hop bands that I like the most are:

Boogie Down Productions
Jungle Brothers
De La Soul
Atmosphere
A Tribe Called Quest
Arrested D
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5
Outkast
Jurrassic 5
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy

And yes, entire genres are not only misrepresented, some are not even present. All I have been listening to these days is the new breed of Reggae/Dancehall that is emerging:
Collie Buddz (saw him in Santa Cruz last night)
Alborosie
Cali P
Natasja Saad
Capleton
Sizzlah
Sean Paul
Damian Marley

That entire genre was left out as well as electronic music, etc., etc., etc. It is good to have stimulating conversation regarding music, so let us keep the side talk to that.
