The Chauncey Rental

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Inspired by Smills' thread really, but without the normal multiple teams and 8 players involved.

For those not in the know, Chauncey Bilups has been playing this season with a giant fork sticking out of his back. He may in fact have died of age related causes during the time that I have been typing up this proposal. He is shooting .344 from the field, has lost a step, and can't turn that corner or get his legs under him for his shot anymore. But he is also:

a $13.2mil ending contract
a former NBA champion
a noted leader
formerly one of the best defensive PGs in the NBA
people forget, but in his youth also a big athletic combo guard that had to learn how ot play the PG

so, no 4 team deals, no giant player swaps:

Chauncey Billups $13.2mil (ender)

for

Beno Udrih $6.7mil (3yrs)

we take on $7mil salary for Denver, using our caproom, but as an ender that all goes away at the end of the year (there is a team option, but no way its picked up). In return we get a washed up veteran leader who understands the value of defense and can play mentor to our kids for the remainder of the year and teach them how to win. At the end of the year we say vaya con dios and actually have even $6.5 MORE million to spend during our upcoming summer of love.

Denver saves itself $7mil this season -- which for them is actually $14mil since they are over the luxury tax --, turns the team over to Ty Lawson, and gets a strong combo guard backup in return who has beter numbers than Chauncey this season

Note: maybe we throw in some candy, maybe. They may be interesed in Thompson or some such. Not sure how we balance that.

I like the trade, but I worry about management's ability to find a PG to replace Billups in the coming off-season. Is it worth getting his leadership for a year if you end up with a Pooh Jeter as your only PG on the bench next year?

He wants to go to a contender but i do this in a blink. Experience and Vetern leadership and a real floor general to get our offense working.

NOTE: the melo situation is primary to this though. No way will we be able to trade for him if melo isnt dealt

With more money than any other team, and a good draft pick, not to mention youth to trade, you have to figure we can find somebody.

I have always liked Chauncey for his tough defense and leadership intangibles. If he will come here I would love to see him in a Kings uniform.

Beno has played well at times, but I would do this trade and count on GP to find another guard.

Brick is right that Kings are in a great position to obtain players........Cap space, several young players, thier picks and TWO expirings (Dally and Landry).

What's the story w/ Billups' contract next year? Player option? Team option? For whatever reason, I wasn't considering him a straight expiring.

Only 3.7 of the last year of his contract is guaranteed up until 5 days after the 2011 season. At that point the full 14.5 million becomes guaranteed.

As for the trade, if it only cost us Beno then yeah and I could see Denver signing off on it. It gets them below the LTT too while not sacrificing PG depth. Overall the Nuggets basically disperse Chauncey's contract over two years and Beno might actually be the better PG at this point too.

As far as the finances go:

Chauncey is owed: 13.15 million this year + 3.7(14.5) million next year(non-guaranteed)

Beno is owed: $6,478,600 $6,925,400 $7,372,200

That's a net difference of 3.9262 million factoring in Billups at the non-guaranteed level.

With the Luxury tax adding into the equation the Nuggets are currently at 83.4 million the lux tax is 70.3. So the Nuggets essentially need to shed Billups deal outright to get below the targeted tax line.

My thoughts are we may need to take on JR Smith's contract with our cap space to make it worth Denver's while.

We could turn it into 2 deals.

Billups + 3 million cash for a 2nd round pick and TPE of 13.15 million dollars
JR Smith + 3 million cash for Beno Udrih

We get some shooters in the backcourt. Shed Beno's contract and the 6 million basically covers the remaining contract of JR Smith. With the added 13 million savings plus the payout for being below the tax the Nuggets are in line overall to save roughly 13 million dollars overall while remaining competitive.

The Kings save money by shedding the last two years of Beno's deal - 3.7 million dollars and difference of Beno vs. Billups deal(about 6 million). Overall the Kings would save about 5-6 million over the course of Beno's contract minus the signing of that same roster spot.

Kings new roster:

C: Samuel Dalembert, DeMarcus Cousins, Hassan Whiteside
PF: Carl Landry, Jason Thompson, Darnell Jackson
SF: Donte Greene, Omri Casspi, Antoine Wright
SG: Tyreke Evans, Francisco Garcia, JR Smith
PG: Chauncey Billups, Luther Head, Pooh Jeter

If they want more for Chauncy than just Beno, we could always throw in Wright or Darnell Jackson. I don't want to see Thompson go, though.

We currently have the lowest payroll in the league by far without the Twolves. The Lakers have 2 1/4 times our salary. Right now with the state of the Maloofs finances I don't see us making any moves that increase the size of the payroll. I do hope we move Landry for another Wing now that Darnell Jackson has proven he can be the 4th big.

Wings around $3M
Jeff Teague $1.5 + Etan Thomas $1.2
CJ Watson $3.1
Kyle Lowry $5.8
Tony Allen $3
Jordan Farmar $3.8 (how did he get that contract?)
Kelenna Azubuike $3.4 (My Pick)
Thabo Sefolosha $3
Nick Young $2.6

I think there are plenty wings out there that could be had for Landry. But I think we need to move before he becomes more exposed.

I think Point guard is much more of our target than WING.

I think Thompson is our bait and we're looking at the likes of Chalmers, Teague, Augustin, Brooks, Toney Douglas, Maynor and etc to fill that void

if we're not going anywhere by the deadline, i'll all for this deal. we could use that capspace to sign a FA and help our draft position.
