The Bee Blasts Cal Expo Board

Coming on heals of "convergence" vote, calls on Governor to fire "shameful" individual board members -finally!

Props to the Bee. Just looking at the board members makes one realize that this thing never had a chance. Bunch of 60 something fat cats who could care less about the future of downtown, the city in general, Kings fans and people looking forward to an exciting new entertainment venue.

Thats funny cause the Bee is one of the major problems in this city in getting a new arena. Never been fair to the Maloofs or Kings.

You know, I'm getting sick and tired of people. And it's not just Sac people, it's California people. One comment is that 99% of Californians don't care about the Kings. Well, dipsh*t, that may or may no be true, but the bottom line isit creates JOBS for people, JOBS to keep people employed in California, JOBS that will help folks feed their family, JOBS that will provide adolescents with an avenue to work themselves through school, JOBS that will get contractors more business, JOBS that will bring people from other states to live in the region, and JOBS that will up the population of California which brings the added benefit of TAX DOLLARS. Narrow minded. It is so disgusting.

The bottom line is at least the Bee is actually bringing information to the region that will help people get behind the Kings. If the Bee were smart, they would have started a mission about 1 hour after the Kings drafted Cousins to get behind the Kings and bring some serious excitement (hey, I woulda bought a subscription if they all of a sudden fell in love with the Kings) to this region and get the taxpayers to soften their stance on the importance of keeping the Kings here (NCAA tourneys, concerts, redneck monster mashes for the Rio Linda folk, dirt bike races, circuses, blah blah blah) so that there would be more folks living and moving here to buy their stupid paper. They need to stop catering to Mr. 60 year old republican and get with the times.

Ahemm! I can assure you that most 60 year old republicans don't spend much time reading the Bee. Its a very liberal newspaper. But then just about all newspapers are liberal today. In this particular case it would have been nice if the Bee had come out with some favorable articles about the arena. It doesn't help to yell after the cow is out of the barn.

The problem I have with that is the Bee has been trashing the Maloofs and the Kings' Organization when talking about getting a new arena for most of the past 10 years. It is like they suddenly realized that if the Kings leave town there won't be much of a need for a sports section anymore. It's not like we need the Bee for their coverage of the A's or the Giants. Most of the articles about them were in the Bay Area papers the day before they make it to the Bee.

If the Bee would have spent more time the past 10 years actually giving good information about why this city needs a new arena for the Kings (and the city), we probably would have had one by now. Instead, the general public in Sac (who don't follow the Kings) think that the Maloofs are just money hungry billionaires that want the city of Sacramento to pay for a new arena when THEY could easily build it themselves. The Bee has also made it sound like the Maloofs want to leave and have been looking for any excuse to do so. Making it sound like they really don't want any of the new arena plans to succeed. So I am not surprised when people in Sacramento act like it might be better if the team just left.

For the Bee to now call out someone else (even if they more than deserved it) is laughable. I think they need to take a long look at themselves in the mirror before they start pointing fingers at others.

I first subscribed to The Bee in 1973 while living in the dorms at CSUS. Later, I mostly read competing Sacramento Union which was conservative alternative to The Bee. After The Union folded in early 90's I returned to The Bee as the only newspaper in Sac. Cancelled my 20+ year subscription around 2000 and will definitely never renew. I don't recall The Bee ever endorsing a single major Republican for governor, US Senator or local congressional representative. Not a political statement - just the facts. Calling it a mouthpiece for "Mr. 60 year old Republican" is beyond laughable - it's incredibily ignorant. Getting back to their latest editorial condeming idiots on Cal Expo board. The Bee editorial board is not very bright either although they arrogantly talk down to Sac like we're all a bunch of peasants and they know everything, everytime. Now they FINALLY speak up on the arena debacle - way, way to late. FOLD STUPID BEE - YOU DESERVE TO GO UNDER!

I find that an ironic mirror of what transpired with Marcus Breton a few years back, and I think it was the exact same dynamic. Trash and trash and trash, and then all of a sudden one day wake up and realize that maybe you were too successful and they actually WERE going to leave, realize the consequences if that were to occur for your job/business and abruptly reverse course.

It's not the Bee's job to sell the Kings. For the years they were doing it, I felt rather grossed out by it. It's the Bees job to find interesting sports news and dig for stories. I have no problem with them attacking the Maloofs, because the Maloofs were BSing fans for years. Since KHTK is already under the Maloofs thumb, having the Bee as a free PR machine for the Kings would leave the general public in the dark on any real news regarding the team.

The Bee Sports has produced Kreidler, SHC(not a fan, but a national guy now) and Breton. I guess people here don't like Breton, but he was some fresh air amongst constant parroting. Marty Mac and the guy writing for the sports blog now are also pretty good beat writers.

And the Bee isn't that liberal or even liberal at all. I suggest reading some real liberal papers. The Bee use to lean more to the left, but being the only paper around, they moved to the center. The Union became cartoonishly conservative in order to distinguish itself from The Bee and paid the price for it, which is sad considering the history of the paper.

You guys realize that the news/reporting and editorial/opinion departments are separate, right?

Absolutely. From beginning the idea of a new arena was never a Bee news/reporting push, while editorial/opinion part of the newspaper either trashed all efforts, remained silent at critical times, or in the end reversed course when it was too late.

No one has ever said that the Bee should be out there trying to promote the Kings are the idea of a new arena. However, they spent most of the past 10 years doing just the opposite. They trashed the Maloofs with no cause. They accused them of not being willing to put up any of their own money toward an arena even though they have said from the beginning that they were planning on putting up some of their own money. The Bee has claimed that the Maloofs have being looking for any reason to move the Kings and didn't want to stay in Sacramento dispite the fact they have always claimed the opposite. And I would point out that if that was the case, they would have moved already.

As for them looking for interesting stories, I have rarely seen any. They spend most of their time trying to find anything negative to write about (even when there is little to back it up) or write about who they should get rid of. The articles of interest about the team or players have been few and far between. If you went back over the past 10 years, I would guess the 2 most common themes for articles have been 1. Why the Kings don't need an arena (or how the Maloofs should pay for it), & 2. Something about why Adelman needs to be fired.

I have also always found it interesting that the Bee goes the majority of the off season with very little converage of the Kings (some times almost whole months go by without anything about the Kings). This is the time of year when good journalists do their digging to come up with stories. If you go to other major cities, you will find at least 1 or 2 articles on their teams on a weekly basis.
