The Alternate Rules Tropical Island Music Draft Thread - Round 20

Pick #13 is a bit contemporary for my list so far. Gotta love the Chili Peppers...I own this compilation, and I like it a lot:).

Closing out round 13:
Wanda Jackson - Queen of Rockabilly (2000)
e3266612u80.jpg

Wanda could rock just as hard if not harder than the guys, as her covers of Long Tall Sally, Money Honey and Brown Eyed Handsome Man prove. But the standouts among the 30 great tracks included in this compilation are perhaps the two she is most known for (also covers) - Fujiyama Mama and Let's Have a Party.

And to start round 14:
The Sun Records Story (Various Artists/2001/Charly)
f33991e607k.jpg

There's quite a few Sun Records collections available, making it tough to narrow down my selection. The "weakness" in this collection is a noticeable lack of Elvis, but I already have those tracks in an earlier collection so this set compliments that choice which is why I am giving this the nod over Rhino's otherwise similar offering (and this one does have about a dozen more tracks after factoring in the Elvis songs I already have).

This selection is a tribute to my mom and dad. I grew up listening to this kind of music, along with everything else from country to classics.

The Golden Years: 1938-1942 - Glenn Miller (Box Set)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005K3N2/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk

There are other Miller boxed sets out there, but this 4-CD set focuses on the very best ... And one reviewer on Amazon.com says it best:

A four CD set allows you to hear a much broader range of music than you would get from a single CD. These include vocals from Marion Hutton and all the featured male singers, but ultimately it is the instrumental tracks (of which In The Mood and Moonlight Serenade are the most famous) which are what Glenn will be best remembered. He never attached great importance to singing, content to employ good singers who were not the absolute best. Some other bands had better singers but were less successful, so Glenn was right - it's the music that counts.

Since D-Mass' Louis Prima pick scared me a bit, I have (likely unnecessarily) moved my next pick up a few rounds.

Sam Butera & The Witnesses -- Wild, Cool & Swinging: The Ultra Lounge Artist Collection (1999) -- Sam is just pure awesome. His "Street Scene" (sadly, there are zero decent youtube clips available) is the reason I decided I wanted to play the saxophone. I stopped playing long ago, but I still love the instrument and Butera plays an alto better than anyone else. He got his start playing in New Orleans strip clubs, had a reputation for innuendo laden lyrics, and always played the sax with the amount of dirty and sexy that, I feel, it needs. In addition, he put together and led Prima's back-up band for over 20 years and was responsible for writing many of their arrangements. I had the pleasure of seeing him in a tiny lounge in Vegas a few years ago -- he was in his 70s and absolutely rocked it. Quickly realized that my friend and I were the only people in the club who had a clue who he was and proceeded to play the rest of the show to our table, sat down with us after the show and thanked us for coming, flirted shamelessly, found out I was Sicilian and disappeared what must have been a $150+ bar tab. One of my most awesome nights ever.

Billy Joel 1973-97-Complete Hits Collection [BOX SET]

Its ironic because I was never a huge huge fan, but I think that Billy Joel has gotten somewhat of a bad rap in the last decade, being turned into some sort of elevator music adult contemporary parody of himself used by kids to clearly distinguish people who are old (i.e. people who listen to Billy Joel) from people who are young and hip. But for a long long time there he kept on churning out pop hits -- not AC hits, but chart topping pop hits -- and across a huge swath of the pop rock landscape. At his peak he was hip enogouh to score a supermodel for a wife despite looking like his father had choked him when he was a kid until his eyes started to pop out of his skull. In any case, give me a 4-disk box set of his greatest hits and there are a ton of songs in there that appeal for a variety of reasons. (actually I think its basically a 3 disk set of hits with one of those 4th disk "special content" fillers they throw into box sets for the die hard fans who will cream over anything from their artist of choice).

The Rolling Stone Women In Rock Collection [BOX SET] (1998)

Misses and omissions as always in one of these sorts of things (no Stevie Nicks? Heart? Hole? Alanis Morisette?), but also a whole big bunch of major hits form a variety of ladies( seems to be roughly organized by date/decade)

I picked this up to day. an information booklet inside with little facts about the singers. very cool. very good. thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Goodness gracious...I was ALLLLLL ready to draft something and good thing I checked to see if it had already been drafted or not...and by golly it was!! A certain someone...who shall remain nameless (in a scientific sort of way) is owed a(nother) Q'BERT!! and that certain nameless scientifc someone knows who he is...

Anywho...let me take this as a consolation...

The drums on this album are fabulous. This may have been acceptable in Slims, making it unnacceptable here? If so, I have a back-up pick.

Good to see you back, Kingzrool, but I'm totally confused ... who's up and which way are we going?

In other words, how long before it's my turn?

:p

Hello, nice to be back. That actually was my turn as well as make ups and now MBF is up and it is on its way back down to you.

Since it's got both live tracks and remixes, I think this one qualifies as a compilation and will be allowed.

atxrocker missed his #14 and is now up for #15. He did make a brief appearance on the board last night. Is he no longer interested in this draft?

I just hate to see things start to really drag out as it's getting close to the start of the NBA season.

when i committed to this draft i didn't predict being as tied up as i've been lately. haven't meant to intentionally slow the thread down. anyways

Beats & Lyrics: Industry Hip Hop Compilation, Issue One- 1997

Classic Rock Gold (2005)

Ok, I neither currently own this (althought that could change here) nor was it where I was initially going with this pick. Had a single artist's greatest hits lined up, and decided to go see whether I could get a more varied time period greatest hits collection with his best songs on it. Along the way stumbled across this, which is just a simply amazing collection of classic rock hits. I was going to highlight all the ones I owned/liked, until I realized it was almost every single song -- something like 13 of 17 off of disk 1 and 11 of 15 off of disk 2. Just ridiculous, and stretching all the way from the late 60s until it throws in a couple of my favorite early 80s tunes as well. Outstanding collection:

Disc: 1
1. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
2. Evil Ways - Santana
3. American Woman - Guess Who
4. All Right Now - Free
5. Locomotive Breath - Jethro Tull
6. Walk Away - The James Gang
7. Maggie May - Rod Stewart
8. I'd Love To Change The World - Ten Years After
9. Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) - The Hollies
10. Frankenstein - The Edgar Winter Group
11. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Elton John
12. We're An American Band - Grand Funk
13. Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
14. China Grove - The Doobie Brothers
15. Radar Love - Golden Earring
16. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
17. You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Bachman Turner Overdrive

Disc: 2
1. Bad Company - Bad Company
2. Hair of the Dog - Nazareth
3. Never Been Any Reason - Head East
4. Slow Ride - Foghat
5. Show Me The Way [LIVE] - Peter Frampton
6. (Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue =D6yster Cult

My next pick is so weird that even I have tried to talk myself out of taking it here, but I'm going ahead and doing it now because leaving it off my list would just be a flat out lie. Life without this CD would make me cry.

Space Ghost's Surf & Turf: 22 Tiki-Torched Tunes (1998)
-- Back in the days before Adult Swim, when "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" was all alone in providing irreverent animation aimed at adults, Cartoon Network began airing "Cartoon Planet" -- a faux Saturday morning kids variety show staring Space Ghost and his two captive ex-villains, Brak (rendered stupid by an evil plot run amok) and Zorak (an evil mantis often on the receiving end of Space Ghost's lasers). This album has several of their songs, mostly sung by Brak (like the wonderful "Mashed Potatoes"), and clips of dialog and sketches from the show. I've had this CD for a decade now, and it still makes me giggle like an idiot every time I listen. Don't know whether to consider this a comedy album or a soundtrack, but for me it's instant happiness.
