The Alternate Rules Tropical Island Music Draft Thread - Round 20

Old Time Radio's Greatest Detectives - Radio Spirits - 2001

This is one of my favorite box sets (after the one I picked first in this draft a few rounds ago, and the boatload of a particular boxed sets I have too I may draft from next ;)) I love detective shows/mysteries and this gets me some of the ones I was familiar with either as TV shows or radio shows...Dragnet in particular in that vein which is very interesting to get into as a radio program. Boston Blackie was another one along with Sam Spade, but this set introduced me to some others that I fell in love with...Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and Richard Diamond rank up at the top of the list newly discovered list. These just don't get old.

just got home...to mix it up a bit

Putumayo Presents: Brazilian Lounge 2006

i've always been a casual fan of this type of music, it wasn't until someone close to me owned this CD and I had to hear it more than I cared to at the time that it really grew on me. had to throw this in there to balance my list some.

Pick #16:

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band: Greatest Hits (1994)

Tradepeja of all people actually tapped Seger briefly in the album draft I think it was. I'm not sure what to say about Seger, except that he has a great emotionally expressive raspy voice and you know far more of his songs than you think you do. This album is one of those Greatest Hits things 10 deep in familiar songs (and they stil missed a few) and I played it a ton during my junior year at Penn, much to the chagrin of my death metal and sicko theater loving dormmate.

1. Roll Me Away
2. Night Moves
3. Turn the Page
4. You'll Accomp'ny Me
5. Hollywood Nights
6. Still the Same
7. Old Time Rock & Roll - Bob Seger, Jackson, George
8. We've Got Tonight
9. Against the Wind
10. Main Street
11. The Fire Inside
12. Like a Rock
13. C'Est la Vie - Bob Seger, Berry, Chuck
14. In Your Time

Pick #17

Dreams: The Ultimate Corrs Collection (2006)

Simply had to mix things up here before I created a list of albums nearly entirely composed of classic and hard rock. So I am thinking pop, I am thinking of maybe scratching my celtic itch, and...voila! This group had a far more successful Greatest Hits album released right at the peak of their popularity back in 2001, but the problem was that many of my favorite songs of theirs came from that same period and so never made it on. This is the more complete collection, record sales or no. Get all the major hits, some celtic meanderings, a couple of (largely failed) dance beat experiments, and even a strong cover of Ruby Tuesday featuring the Stones. As always Andrea Corr has one of the truly beautiful voices around, you get the celtic lilts...there is a lot to like here, and a nice switchup from most of the rest of my list.

1. Goodbye
2. Forgiven Not Forgotten - The Corrs,
3. Dreams - The Corrs, Nicks, Stevie
4. Radio
5. When the Stars Go Blue - The Corrs, Adams, Ryan
6. Only When I Sleep
7. Breathless
8. So Young
9. Runaway
10. Summer Sunshine
11. What Can I Do
12. All I Have to Do Is Dream - The Corrs, Bryant
13. No Frontiers - The Corrs, McCarthy, Jimmy
14. Angel
15. Old Town - The Corrs, Lynott, Phil
16. Ruby Tuesday - The Corrs, Richards, Keith
17. Haste to the Wedding
18. I Know My Love - The Corrs, Moloney, Paddy
19. Brid Og Ni Mhaille
20. Toss the Feathers

I cannot believe someone besides me picked a Corrs CD for one of these drafts. You continue to surprise with your picks around the edges in these things. Well done!

This draft really seems to be slowing down. Can I suggest that we shorten the 24-hour period to 12 hours and get it moving again? I've seen so many good selections that I really hate to see it bogged down now...

I'm reluctant to make that change this late in the game, but if the thread stays as sluggish as it has been I'll consider it.

That being said, bozzwell has timed out and my pick will be up momentarily.

Sorry for the delay. Here is my pick:

41 Original Hits from the Soundtrack of American Graffiti (1973)

17. "Barbara Ann" by The Regents (1961)

19. "Maybe Baby" by Buddy Holly (1958)
20. "Ya Ya" by Lee Dorsey (1961)
21. "The Great Pretender" by The Platters (1955)

[edit] Disc two

1. "Ain't That a Shame" by Fats Domino (1955)
2. "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry (1958)
3. "I Only Have Eyes for You" by The Flamingos (1959)
4. "Get a Job" by The Silhouettes (1958)
5. "To the Aisle" by The Five Satins (1957)
6. "Do You Wanna Dance" by Bobby Freeman (1958)

19. "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" by The Spaniels (1953)
20. "All Summer Long" by The Beach Boys (1964)

This is another band that I really wanted in Slim's draft, but I just couldn't fit them onto that list.

Pizzicato Five -- Made in USA (1994) -- This is Japanese pop that is both delightfully pop and delightfully Japanese. As with many of my selections in this draft, this group is high on kitsch and camp (especially with songs like "Sweet Soul Revue," "Baby Love Child," and "Twiggy, Twiggy, Twiggy vs. James Bond"), but I mostly like them because it's near impossible to listen without a little toe tappin'.

Men Without Hats - The Collection - 1996

"The Safety Dance" was my favorite 80's song as a kid...and the video is just plain crazy. This isn't an outstanding album...about 5 songs I really like. Just nostalgia, I suppose...

Pick #17: The Crow Soundtrack (1995)
This one was very nearly on my list. In fact, I think it was there and got bumped (based solely on the fact that I already gave The Crow some love in the movie thread). The Cure, Violent Femmes, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nine Inch Nails tracks on this soundtrack are high on my list of favorites for each band and I've always loved the track by Machines of Loving Grace, as well. This CD lived in my stereo and walkman (sad that even a discman seems ancient anymore) for a good portion of my junior year in high school.

Stiff Little Fingers - The Peel Sessions (1986)

Recorded between 1978-1980 over 4 sessions with famed DJ John Peel this serves as a near "greatest hits" album (if you ignore the absence of Alternative Ulster and like alternate takes) for the band that many dubbed "the Irish Clash" - a designation that was both the highest of compliments and a curse they could never quite live up to.

Kicking off rd 18:
Nuggets -Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968 (Rhino 1998 CD Box Set)

One of the most highly regarded Rhino box sets, I am a little surprised that this wasn't on someone elses list. While the term "Psychedelic" occasionally sends me into convulsions this set has enough 2-3 minute garage rockers to get me to overlook the bits of hippy dippy acid fueled wankery that most people associate with the term.

Pick #18, and I'm finally picking my favorite boxed set. This might be ineligable, because it is really 4 DVDs, but I think it should qualify as it really plays like an album, and was ineligible for the album draft. This box is a sampling of the best performances during 8 simultaneous concerts from around the world to fight global poverty in 2005. It has great live performances by Pink Floyd (The first and only performance by the band live in the last 24 years!), U2, Coldplay, Bon Jovi, Green Day, and many many more. Great box, and well worth the $26 I spent on it:D.

Pick #18: Live 8 (4 DVD Boxed Set) 2005

Hate to have to be a meanie poohead, but... I've going to disallow this collection if it's not an actual album. Interesting pick, but not for this draft.

That means you're still technically on the clock for a replacement.

Bummer..So since another pick was disallowed I'll have to re-pick:(.

Pick #18, and I'll pull out the first classical pick of the draft. This is a 20 disk compilation with all the classical heavy hitters...Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart ,Chopin, Tshaikovsky, Brahms, Schubert, Wagner, and more. This will help fill the quiet moments on my island, and give me something to listen to while I'm feeling intellectual:p.

Pick #18: Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium (20 Disk Boxed Set) 1999

Wow. Very nice pick, Jespher.

For my 18th selection, I'm going with a compilation from my generation's equivalent of MTV. Yep...American Bandstand.

Whooot!!!

American Bandstand - Box Set - 2007

If this collection doesn’t make my life on the island interesting, nothing will. I remember watching American Bandstand every Saturday morning, while my little brother screamed that it wasn’t fair. One of the joys of being the oldest was that I usually won the argument. This collection features 25 years worth of memories - while I’m pretty sure Dick Clark didn’t age a day during the whole time.

Disc 1
1. I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) - Four Tops
2. (Love Is Like a ) Heat Wave - Martha & the Vandellas
3. My Girl - The Temptations
4. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
5. For Once in My Life - Stevie Wonder
6. Someday We'll Be Together - Diana Ross & the Supremes
7. I Want You Back - The Jackson 5
8. One Bad Apple - The Osmonds
9. Do Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann
10. I Heard It through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
11. Monday, Monday - The Mamas & the Papas
12. Maggie May - Rod Stewart
13. Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Diana Ross
14. Ain't That Peculiar - Marvin Gaye
15. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves - Cher

Disc 2

And now I'm finally getting to the series that could have easily been the whole draft for me.

Ultra Lounge, Vol. 1: Mondo Exotica [Various Artists] (1996) -- This collection is a must have for fans of martini/tiki culture. Half the fun is still searching through moldy thrift store albums for all the great covers, but the Ultra Lounge collections have all the iconic hits of the genre and all of the heavy hitters are represented: Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Yma Sumac, and many more. Not for everyone (not my fault some people are boring), but one of my very favorite CDs.
