The Alternate Rules Tropical Island Music Draft Thread - Round 20

Okay. I have stayed quiet until now. But I simply cannot contain my nausea any further. I absolutely hate Journey. I bet if you looked back, you will not find many if any posts were I say that I hate something, so I mean this very literaly. Steve Perry is an !@#$% whiner and he ruined the apparently decent band that was Clover. Albeit he made them tons of cash and they would never complain.

I was at the Bammies one year (the year Faith No More took a bunch of awards) and they did a whole stupid Journey tribute. UGH. Seriously, John Lee Hooker was there (sitting next to me w/a young hottie) and they were tributing Journey???!!! Good greif.

Cool. To each his own. Seems like quite a few people like them, so I'll take comfort in that.

'Nother big soundtrack.

Casino [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (2006)
-- One of my very favorite things about Martin Scorsese as a director is the way in which he uses licensed music in his films. It's really quite masterful. And, while you really need to watch the film in order to appreciate that aspect (something I wouldn't be able to do on the island, obviously), this soundtrack is still fantastic in terms of versatility. There are plenty of mob movies standards here -- Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Louis Prima, "Knights in White Satin" (seriously, that song is on several mob movie soundtracks, for some unknown reason) -- but also Devo, The Staples Singers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Cream, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Smith, Otis Redding, Roxy Music, and on and on. This is easily one of my favorite albums.

Also, since I've been including youtube links in the last few write-ups, check out Jimmy Smith's "Walk on the Wild Side." One of my favorite tracks on the album, especially around the 2:40 mark, when Jimmy starts to go nuts on the organ.

I picked you to respond to, because I knew that you would not take it personally. And yes, they are hugely popular, especially in the Bay Area, where they are from.

I don't get how you can not like Jouney.

Either you actually like them because they are so musically awesome that you are overpowered by all the awesomeness that is Journey.

-or-

You nostagically like them because they are 80s cheese and you are overpowered by all the awesomeness that was 80s cheese.

-or-

You think they suck, but you like them to be ironic.

Any way you want it, that's the way you got it... everybody has to like Journey.

Permanent Record: The Very Best Of Violent Femmes (2005)

The other great fol punk band (I picked Pogues in regular album draft).

I hear you...I'm definitely not offended. Again, to each his own...

I'm sure I could pick some things in your list that cause the same nausea...

:p

U218 Singles (2006)

It is of course impossible to do a one disk singles compilation of U2 without leaving a lot of stuff on the table. But the stuff you DO get out of this one makes it well worth while:

1. Beautiful Day
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. Pride (in The Name Of Love)
4. With Or Without You
5. Vertigo
6. New Year's Day
7. Mysterious Ways
8. Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
9. Where The Streets Have No Name
10. Sweetest Thing
11. Sunday Bloody Sunday
12. One
13. Desire
14. Walk On
15. Elevation
16. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
17. The Saints Are Coming
18. Window In The Skies

For some reason i became indecisive at this pick, not like I won't be back up again soon or anything, but just couldn't decide on where I wanted to go... so I went here...

Luther Vandross' Greatest Hits - Luther Vandross - 1999

The voice...the style...

This one doesn't have everything *I* consider essential, but it works as a sampler.

A Nice Pair - Pink Floyd

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets. Their first two albums in what could be considered the earliest of all the box sets. This is some really great music.

Ummagumma - Pink Floyd

I have had some really fun times with "Several Species of Small Furry Creatures Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict". But let's keep that between you and me. A Pict, by the way is a Scottish miner. I get some live versions of the previous pick. This album was a big deal for me when I discovered it years after it came out.

What you feel for Journey is what I feel for Pink Floyd

Okie doke. Looks like atx timed out again. As the rules are written, that would mean that he has forfeited his 10th round pick. Since a) this draft has so far been so laid back and b) his 10th and 11th round picks were separated by a matter of hours, however, I'm inclined to let him make up both of his picks at any time.

In any case, Brick's up. Again, I'll PM all involved.

I think that's fair. I don't like the idea of picks being forfeited when the time can be so variable anyway. My thought would be that as long as he doesn't just flake entirely, he should be able to catch up.

Of course, if he picks anything on my list (yeah, like that's gonna happen :p) I might change my mind.

;)

I like my unwritten rule on this topic. If 16 picks(1 full round) are made after the timeout, then a pick is forfeited. I find it to be fair considering the number of timeouts my draft has had.

I think it should be flexible. Sometimes people have problems, such as computer crashes or LIFE, that interfere with Internet stuff. But this is G3's draft and I have no doubt whatsoever that she will be fair.

If this draft had been hampered by as many time outs as some of the others, I'd be much more of a hardass in enforcing that rule. Since it has chugged along pretty quickly so far, and since it seems the format has meant a lot fewer "stolen" picks than in the other drafts, I just don't think that late picks are going to make that big of a deal.

Apologies again for taking so long.

Ok, so my own time to start the soundtrack game:

Dazed & Confused (1993) [Soundtrack]

One of the nifty things about this draft is the ability to break away from only getting 20 artists to listen to forever. This soundtrack was a potpourri of all kinds of fun classic 70s rock and better than just about any "Best of 70s" collection of which I am aware.

1. Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer
2. Slow Ride - Foghat
3. School's Out - Alice Cooper
4. Jim Dandy - Black Oak Arkansas
5. Tush - ZZ Top
6. Love Hurts - Nazareth
7. Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
8. Cherry Bomb - The Runaways
9. Fox On The Run - Sweet
10. Low Rider - War
11. Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd
12. Highway Star - Deep Purple
13. Rock And Roll All Night - Kiss
14. Paranoid - Black Sabbath

Trainspotting: Music from the Motion Picture (1996)

  1. "Lust for Life" - Iggy Pop (5:15)
  2. "Deep Blue Day" - Brian Eno (3:58)
  3. "Trainspotting" - Primal Scream (10:36)
  4. "Atomic" - Sleeper (5:11)
  5. "Temptation" - New Order (7:02)
  6. "Nightclubbing" - Iggy Pop (4:15)
  7. "Sing" - Blur (6:03)
  8. "Perfect Day" - Lou Reed (3:46)
  9. "Mile End" - Pulp (4:33)
  10. "For What You Dream Of" (Full-on Renaissance Mix) - Bedrock featuring KYO (6:30)
  11. "2:1" – Elastica (2:35)
  12. "A Final Hit" - Leftfield (3:17)
  13. "Born Slippy .NUXX" - Underworld (9:46)
  14. "Closet Romantic" - Damon Albarn (3:09)

Stone Temple Pilots- Thank You 2003

lots of tracks from purple which i took in the album draft but some goodies i couldn't pass up, including one of my favorites released exclusively on this album, all in that suit that you wear.

This is another soundtrack that has been one of my favorite albums for the last 10+ years.

Desperado [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (1995)
-- When a film's original score is provided by Los Lobos, you're already getting off to a good start with me. When the soundtrack includes tracks by Link Wray, Dire Straights, Roger & The Gypsies, and (one of my favorite bands) Tito & Tarantula, it's damn near impossible for me not to love it. Even Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek have songs here and, surprisingly, they're both decent. Several youtube links for my faves: Six Blade Knife, Strange Face of Love, Pass the Hatchet. Sadly, I couldn't find links for two of my very favorite songs on the album, "Manifold de Amour" and "Forever Nightshade Mary," both by the so-called Latin Playboys -- which is actually just a collection of various members of Los Lobos, Tito & Tarantula, and Robert Rodriguez himself -- but they're absolutely worth listening to. Good stuff.
