If SVG doesn't want us to be his first choice then it's time to move on.
is Portland Oden's first choice? Is Seattle Durant's first choice? Do those teams care? They know they are getting pros who want to do well in any situation.

SVG wants to be in Orlando or Sac, with an edge to Orlando. No need to worry if we are #1 or #2 in his mind if we can get him here.

And he couldn't in the East if the team doesn't improve?? Makes no sense at all.
And what guarantee is there that the Pistons, Cavs, Bulls, Nets, Wizards, and Heat don't continually improve and get deeper, or more seasoned? And this doesn't even include the lottery teams that could come up big in the draft or have expirings to throw away (MIL, ATL, PHI, BOS).

Another crap assessment....

That article makes no sense, if SVG wants the Magic job so badly then they aren't going to miss out on him while the Donovan is being worked out. They are his first choice and now he would be their first choice then he'll just wait until the Donovan thing is done and then sign with them. It may take a few hours to get the thing done or perhaps a few days, Donovan may get penalized or maybe not, but we know for sure that he won't be coaching the Magic next year so that spot is essentially SVG's right now.

I agree if Donavan is out today, tomorrow, next week whatever SVG wanted that job and Orlando would offer it to him no doubt. So we should contact Carlisimo, Porter, Rambis, and Larry Brown.

I don't buy it. Again, we stand to free up just as much cap room as they do in the next few years, and this Conference is dotted with a few established stars that are in the back stages of their primes. Not that it will dip to the East anytime soon, but again, this crap about him having a guaranteed easier time with the Magic is pure hogwash. People said the same thing about Larry in NY. These sorts of statements are crap, and faulty journalism in my book.
Well I have to disagree as far as the salary cap situation is concerned. We don't stand to open up any serious cap room until after two more seasons when the Bibby and Artest contracts expire. But don't forget guys like Martin and Garcia will be due extensions and that doesn't include any players we sign with the MLE or any players we draft which are due more money in our current spot. Our biggest anchors of Miller and Thomas don't come off our cap for another four years and they are the least tradeable.

True, but you're accepting, then, that both of them will not only be with us (thus not traded), but that they both will exercise their options here. And you're forgetting that Nelson, Garritty, and Howard are all possibly due large raises on their current salary, Howard in particular. No matter how much Hill frees up, that cuts it close.

There are some holes in the story. If Donavan wants out and the Magic want to move forward with Vangundy (or anyone else at this point) all they need to do is void the contract from both sides no harm no foul. Even in a state as backward as the legal swamps of Florida that is NOT that hard to do. So it would seem that either Donavan wants somenthing from the Magic or the Magic want something from Donavan.

SVG is wise to steer clear of the situation untill it clears, but IF Kings management really thing SVG is the man they want then they would do well to poney up their BEST offer now.

This is a crucial point. And even though it was planned in advance, it seems a little more than kismet that Petrie is in Orlando as we speak...

That's quite possibly the dumbest, most worthless thing I have ever read. Purely speculative, no journalistic duty, and the author should be reamed for being so irresponsible.

I know we're in an era of "e-publishing" and what not, but that sort of thing is dangerous. What does this moron base this on? Garbage.
Well, it is a blog (look at the link), so it's not like it was supposed to "stand up to the light of day". Blogs are inherently (usually) some person's opinion of something or other....

I know, but it's a blog representing a published author and a feature publication he works for, so they need to have a little more responsibility to that end. The only thing a blog means is that it's an opinion piece and doesn't need advance editing. It doesn't free them to make slanderous or loosely speculative commentary.

I'm not saying that the Magic have the greatest situation in the world, it's just better than ours. And when I talk about Bibby and/or Artest I'm either talking about them or the players we get in return for them if they're traded, remember they have to be near equal salaries. I would bet that Artest will be traded and it's not a stretch to say both will be, but it all depends on what kind of contracts we can get in return. I also doubt either would opt out early because they won't be able to get near as much money signing with another team.

I don't think its as "simple" as you have stated because if it was, I think it would have already been over with and everyone would have been able to move on.

This is from the RealGM Magic board:

"i watching channel 9 sports report and zach klein said he the contract stuff should be finished by tomorrrow...mentioned that donovan has been in his house in gville since friday and since that time 'has mumbled 3 sentences to magic management'.....and stan van gundy has a contract offer from the kings 'right now' infront of him"

This at least confirms that local news down there is reporting he has a firm contract in hand, first I've seen of it....

Actually when two parites MUTUALLY agree to void a contract it is. Things get complicated when one or both parties try to get something out of the deal still. It's not a 10 min fix but a few hours of drafting up unconditional realse forms and then signatures. If it takes days thats a sign that SOMEONE is playing hardball (for example the Magic trying to either hold him to the deal or recive damages from him or Donavan trying to keep a bonus)

Looks like tomorrow could be a very interesting day, hopefully that contract in front of SVG is a good one.

You gotta admit that this Billy Donovan thing is pretty pathetic. He says he was rushed to make a decision, I doubt it. The Magic wanted him BAD, he could have taken all the time he needed and now he's hiding in his house. It's probably for the best for him though, he doesn't look like a guy who could handle the rigors of the NBA. We'll see how he does next year without a starting lineup of NBAers.

There is a differance in SVG saying he would take the job and not taking it and Donovan in that Donovan actually signed a contract and SVG hasn't. Also I heard on 1140 from Grant that Seattle is close to signing Rick Carisle as there new head coach, which Grant said I dont get that move at all. The guy is a dictator and wants to rule the team. He said how many times do Carisle's teams in Detroit and Indiana had to quit on him for these teams to keep giving him a chance. Also why does everyone want SVG over Porter? Just curious?

Carlisle is a dictator, and his teams have quit on him, and likely will again. But before they quit on him at each stop, he drove those teams to the Conference Finals. Which ain't chopped liver and is further than the Sonics have been since Sean Kemp didn't look like a Goodyear blimp. Hence why he keeps on getting jobs.

As for SVG over Porter...Porter is a reasonable coaching choice. He comes in positioned similarly to where Muss was before last year, but throw in better assisting experience, playing experience at a high level, familiarity with Sacto and Petrie etc. But SVG has flat out proven more in his short coaching stint than has Porter. With Porter you would ahve the question, until he actually did it, could this guy coach a team at an elite level? With SVG in only two years you found out he could coach a rebuilding team to an overachieving season, AND that he could coach an elite team to within a game of the Finals. That's quite an impressive resume for a guy only around a little over two years. He's shown he can coach defense, that he can coach stars, that he can get kids to overachieve...as long as the questions about his departure/time off in Miami have been answered to everyone's satisfaction (and they apparently have from all the offers he's been getting), he is the coaching prospect with the fewest questions hanging over him, and a guy you could be thinking of as a long term solution. Not only the rebuild, but the climb back up.

Now the Heat may seek compensation. Wow this is getting messy for all parties. I got to say Riley is an *** if this is true.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/spor...jun05,0,2491748.story?coll=orl-home-headlines

The Orlando Magic have offered their head coaching job to Stan Van Gundy, but signing him to a contract may not be easy.

The Miami Heat on Tuesday entered the bizarre saga created when Billy Donovan accepted the job and then asked to be released from his contract
Sources told the Sentinel the Heat are threatening to hold up the hiring of Van Gundy by asking for compensation.

According to those close to the situation, Heat Coach and team President Pat Riley could ask the Magic for future draft picks for Van Gundy, who has another year left on his contract as a consultant for the Heat.

Van Gundy was the Heat's coach until Riley replaced him two seasons ago and led the Heat to an NBA title in 2006.

Van Gundy would replace Donovan, who asked to be released from his five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Magic one day after being named head coach last Friday.

Legal representatives for the Magic and Donovan met Tuesday to work on voiding the contract, and a settlement could be reached Wednesday that would allow Donovan to return to his former job as coach of the Florida Gators.

Van Gundy has other options, too. Sources told the Sentinel he also has an offer to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

I have to wonder if that is Riley -- sounds to me more like something the Heat ownership would come up with out of competition with an in state rival. Riley could ahve imposed this at any time, but Stan has been free to go wherever up tot his point. Still not cool at all.

Wasn't there some connection of Donovan to the Heat? Knows Riley? Or knows the owner? Or some such? Could it then be as retaliation for punsihement being meted out to Donovan?

I agree this whole thing is ridiculous. The only rational thing for SVG to do is just to cut bait and come sign with us. ;)

If the Heat seeking compensation thing is true it is simply disgusting. Riley ran SVG out and I don't care if it was completely Riley's idea, ownership and upper management are just as responsible. The man is looking for a job that he deserves and this kind of thing could prevent that for him. It's time for the Heat to take the knife out of his back and let him walk.

Miami wanting compensation is a good thing for us IMHO. If Magic want SVG they might need to compensate the Heat since they are rivals in the same state but if he signs with us then he would be going to a different conference and Heat wouldn't be asking us for compensation :D

SVG, just sign with us and get it over and done with :)

Van Gundy = Strong Coach, Even Better Person

I'm in a rather unique vantage point here -- lifelong Kings fan, going back 30+ years.

But I actually played for SVG one year, in college, a long time ago and then had the rare opportunity to cover his teams in the NBA, as a media guy, from time to time.

I'd love to see him go to Sacramento because he would be ideal for "growing and nuturing" the Kings back into a force with the Western Conference. He did it in Miami when Riley left at 0-7 a few years back. SVG willed the Heat back to .500.

Please, Kings Fans, I just ask that you do not think that he is holding up the Kings for more leverage. He understands just how fragile the coaching profession is, between what he went through both at Wisconsin and with the Heat. He was devastated by his experience in the Big Ten -- fired after one year, largely because a booster was threatening to withhold a $15 million donation for a new arena unless they fired SVG and brought in a hand-picked coach.

The only thing keeping him from the Kings is that he and his family have lived in South Florida for a decade now. That is home. If he sees Orlando as a similar situation (young team, great potential) to the way he sees Sacramento, staying in Florida will win out.

I'm disappointed that the Heat are now making noise about SVG leaving and coaching elsewhere. Riley threw SVG "to the wolves" in late '05, and everyone knows it, the innuendo remains. You don't coach for 25 years, from Division II to the Big Ten to the Heat, and then, suddenly once you are in that perfect time to win an NBA title, decide then that you want to walk away and be with your family.

SVG is a solid choice and an even better person. I hope that he ends up happy, most of all, whether in Orlando or Sacramento. And I hope the Kings get back to the days of 55 wins real soon!

Maybe all over soon.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The

Orlando Magic are close to resolving their coaching fiasco by agreeing to a deal to dismiss Billy Donovan and hire Stan Van Gundy, according to reports Tuesday.
ESPN.com reported Donovan and the team were finalizing an agreement for his departure. Terms would prevent Donovan from coaching in the NBA for five years, sources told the outlet. The Orlando Sentinel reported that the Magic offered a contract to Van Gundy, a former Heat coach and current adviser to Pat Riley in Miami.
The Magic might have to compensate the Heat with money or a draft pick because Van Gundy is still under contract through June 30, 2008. Miami only has a first-round pick, No. 20 overall, in this year's draft, while Orlando currently has a first-rounder and three second-round selections.
Reached at his home Tuesday night by The Associated Press, Van Gundy declined comment when asked if either the Magic or

Sacramento Kings — with whom he's interviewed twice, including this past Saturday — had made him any contract offers.
Riley was traveling and unavailable for comment, according to a Heat official.
Orlando and Donovan are laboring to finalize their futures fast — Donovan to save his consensus No. 1 recruiting class at Florida, the Magic to save face.
Donovan stunned the hoops world by agreeing to a five-year, $27.5 million deal on Thursday. He met the media on Friday, and a day later told the club he wanted out of the contract.
Donovan previously declined an offer to coach Kentucky, where his career began as an assistant.
Van Gundy was Orlando's second choice all along, but the Magic didn't think he'd be needed after Thursday. He was also being courted by the Kings,

Charlotte Bobcats and

Indiana Pacers. The Bobcats and Pacers have hired coaches, but the Kings' continued search worried Orlando.
Van Gundy coached the Heat just over two years before resigning last season, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. Riley took over 21 games in and led the team to its first championship.

HMMMMMM. If I am SVG and I am SERIOUS about the business (putting family matters aside) I have to go with the Kings who don't have all this BullCrap surrounding the job with them. Get out of Florida get your family out of Florida and its bullcrap. Besides Hurricane season started 4 days ago what better time to leave.

Further more how much self respect could you have while you have the Orlando job knowing you were second choice and that is all ppl are going to talk about the entire time you are the coach there. On ESPN it will not be SVG the coach of the Magic. It will be SVG the coach of the Magic because Donavan backed out. Its not a situation I would want to be in.

If SVG takes the Orlando job I think it will soley be because of his family and not the situation he is going into. He has to hate the way he was offered the job.
