SVG & Kings verbal agreement, with wiggle room...

No need for the list to be so short. After you get past the first two, Brooks is at the same, or even a lesser level, as a guy like Rambis or Shaw. All just assistants looking for that break.

I would asume that Elston had no shot form the beginnign because of the tiff wiht the Maloofs, and he has apparently, adn not surprisingly, been offered a chacne to rejoin Rick down in Houston.

Porter has actually seemingly been acting a bit like Whiz, been politivcking for a looksee for years now, but for whatever reason seems to be getting the cold shoulder. Do have to say if we were NOT interested in him, then this long stupidly drawn out process has actually been just that: stupid. And unecessary. You've had two months. No reason for it to take that long unless you've been dragging your feet waiting for guys to free up.

I'm not sure is Thibadeua or Person ever got a first interview. Sounds like not.

Not sure Iavaroni ever gave us a chance. Seemed to jump at the Memphis job...why one would jump at that job I have no idea.

I only put three on my list because the others I'm either not exactly aware what they bring to the table or simply don't like what I do know about them. Porter may or may not have gotten the cold shoulder from the Kings this time around. Since they interviewed him before they may just feel they know what they need to know about him at this point.

This whole damn thing has become like a Groucho Marks or Three Stooges movie. I just hope the comedy ends soon so we can get on with our very serious matters at hand with the Kings organization - #10 draft pick, trading Bibby and/or Artest, summer workouts, getting a new arena, etc.

So to sum it up on my short list: If SVG can be signed - JUST DO IT! If Porter has to be our second choice - SO BE IT! If Scotty is the the last man standing - HIRE HIM NOW!

Thibodeau definitely got an interview, and Iavaroni never was considered due to what many felt was a close ideological similarity to EMuss.

And I don't blame the Kings for waiting a while. This sort of thing with SVG and Donovan is a black swan- an aberration no one could ever expect. We picked 8 candidates to interview, proceeded with two, and offered the job (allegedly) to one. That seems to be par for the business and working world, and we waited for the best candidates to become available. Had we jumped the gun, Cartwright, possibly Shaw and Rambis, and Thibodeau would not have been able to interview due to playoff delays. I, for one, am glad we considered all options and did our due dilligence here. Last time, I wish we would have interviewed a much higher number of people- this time, we may have it (hopefully) right.
Not rushing into things and taking your time has its merits no doubt BUT just how much time is needed?!

I mean seriously, its been nearly 2 months since Musselman was shown out the door, no one can convince me that you couldn't interview candidates, identify your choice for a head coach and offer him a contract. A lot of teams that sacked their coach after us have already someone to replace them.

Taking time to do the right process is OK but taking too much time can be just as irresponsible as not taking enough time. Taking this long has most likely cost us the best coaching candidate on the market and once you are settling for your 2nd or 3rd choice, then the actual process of taking time was pretty much useless.

There's a big difference between 8-9 weeks and 5-6 weeks. It's been 5-6 weeks now.

I can see two possible positives from Miami's compensation demand:

1) If they are demanding a first and nothing less, then that might be too high a price for Orlando. Of course, on the other hand, if they are willing to pony it up, it would wipe out any hard feelings of being "second choice" if those feelings even exist.

2) If Orlando gives up the first, it gives Miami another asset in a potential trade for either Artest or Bibby. Basing that on the reports that indicate some don't think Miami has the assets to get either one, which is in itself baffling.

The Sac Bee this morning says Porter is apparently not in the mix - the Kings have not requested permission to speak to him.

I have to agree with Bricklayer... the Kings handled this stupidly. SVG appears to have been there for the taking if we had been more decisive and not done this mock "deliberation" act to attone for last year's debacle. Waiting for first choice Porter to become available was the only sensible rationale for all the delay (unless we're REALLY waiting for first choice Carlesimo?)

You're forgetting, though, that the delay was due to a number of reasons. One, Geoff was in Europe on a planned scouting trip for 2 wks, during which he vetted and came up with a list of candidates. Organizing interviews and what not takes another week, then you add guys that may be on vacation during the summer, another week, then you add guys that may be interviewing for other jobs, that's another week. Then you add when they might be able to meet with the ever-moving Maloofs, and you've got us to today.

The point is, I don't think it's entirely intentional meddling by GP, if at all. I think it's just that way be design. And if we lose out in the SVG sweepstakes, it honestly won't be for lack of trying...

Petrie isn't making the final call on the coach. Just presenting the Maloofs with the top prescreened candidates.

And I don't think Sacramento would have to provide any draft picks -- Riley had said that Stan could go out and interview wiht whoever he wanted to, he was alsmost hired in Indiana etc., and there was never a peep about any of that until the Orlando job came up. So I am thinking that the whole draft pick thing was brought up only when it looked like he might go to the instate rival. Still pretty bush league -- hell we were rumored to be interviewing both Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis off the Lakers without anything of that sort involved. But potentially a GOOD thing for us, might be our best shot at him if Miami tries to chase Orlando away and leaves him for us.
If Petrie role is simply presenting his prescreened candidates to the Maloofs, then we're basically watching a rerun of last year. Is Petrie going to go to the Maloofs and say, "I recommend "X" for the coach, or is he "presenting candidates" to the Maloofs for them to pick one? Is he going to put his neck out there with a recommendation, or is he going to facilitate a decision through a consensus building process? I thought Petrie was going to be the guy making the call and the Maloofs were the rubber stamp. The process seems like BS to me - a good way to CYA if it goes down badly again.

I completely agree, the idea is to get a coach in here as quickly as possible to begin preparation for next year and to have input in personnel decisions. If the Kings had no interest in Porter there was no reason to just mull around. I understand that scouting needs to be done but the coaching situation around here is kind of fragile right now and shouldn't be put on the backburner.

This is starting to bother me. We're watching teams snatch up their first choice for head coach, and the list of viable candidates is shrinking. I appreciate the diligence that Petrie and Co. are putting into to the search, especially in light of the Whisenant/Musselman debacle from last summer, but it's time to make a decision already, so we can start getting ready for next season.

It's been two months. Let's get someone in for crying out loud.

It was pointed out in another thread that Musselman was hired on June 4. It's only June 6 right now. It just seems like forever because we have nothing else to talk about...

Our season didn't end as soon last season.

It just seems like we were the first team with a coaching vacancy, and we might end up getting getting everyone's leftovers. I don't want them to rush anything, but the Draft is around the corner. It's time for us to have a coach.

NOTE: I'm closing this thread simply for housekeeping purposes. No need to have multiple threads about SVG...
