SUSPENSIONS ANNOUNCED!

Okay, Fred Jones I do remember seeing. Both Johnson and Miller (who received one game for leaving the bench) were in street clothes, I believe, along with Scot Pollard who may actually have been one of the coolest heads on the Pacers roster...

NBATV has gone live to talk about the suspensions and then go to a live press conference.

fair enough. it could have been a LOT worse.

oh boy i can hear it now, pacers fans whinning about " how the league is picking on them" blah blah blah. well pacers fans, it was your 3 players who punched fans. NO ONE on the pistons TOUCHED a fan.

i.
Uh,

they were detroit fans.

This hasn't been specified yet. I'm listening to the news conference right now and I'll post an update if they mention it. There was also mention of how these suspensions would impact the salary cap for Indiana as they are without pay suspensions. I'll break down the money value of the suspensions in a few minutes here, but I can tell you that the total amount is roughly $12 million dollars for Indiana

the suspensions are justified! however, the sentencing in length on some players are questionable. for example, wallace's 6 game suspention is a bit lineant in a my opinion. and also, miller's one game suspension for coming out and restraining his teamates is questionable. sorry if i sound biased when i say i know when decisions and rulings seem unfair. this situation is one of a kind. so it is wrong using the sprewell incident or any other as reference. you can't use those same circumstances to determine the degree of punishment the players in this predicament should get. for one, fans were involved. i agree with david stern's core belief in setting boundaries. i also agree, this situation is profound and the league needs to make a point to players and fans alike. but he said something that made me question his reasoning behind the players' punishments. he said they need to review the tapes to figure out the changes they need to make. now, what got me is his statement on reviewing the tapes. before he made executive decisions punishing the particular players that he did, he should have reviewed the tapes already. in other words he was not thoroughly defining himself and the terms he was using. also, when he said that artest's reputation "might" have played a factor, that to me seemed insincere because he can't answer the simple question with a yes or no! again he continually restates, "We have to look at everything." david stern should get in to his head that fans of pacers and pistons alike that aren't buying his reasoning of what's fair! i know i don't - no matter how many sports anylists are kissing his *** right now for being fair because they fear losing their jobs. please guys ask questions! things aren't answered. and they shouldn't atempt because mr. stern made it clear they have not reviewed the tapes throroughly. hence, why did he keep saying they NEED to look at them? please don't be credulous!

I would think it would have to be to have the necessary bite.

Have my doubts whether these will stand as handed down. But if they do -- that's really a franchise ruiner for Indiana in a year when they were thought to be title contenders.

cogito -

Wallace's suspension was in line with his actions, which didn't involve interaction with fans or going into the stands IMHO.

Stern made it abundantly clear that he is sending a very strong message to ALL the NBA. His comment about reviewing the tapes wasn't inconsistent. He was, I believe, referring to determining what future actions the league will be taking to prevent future incidents. He isn't undecided about the punishment for the players. He's interested in doing everything possible to prevent future problems. Totally different topics...

Okay, here's the breakdown of the suspensions on the Indiana side

Ron Artest - 2004/2005 salary $6,157,895 - suspended 73 games - $4,994,737
Jermaine O'Neal - 2004/2005 salary $14,782,500 - suspended 25 games - $4,106,250
Stephen Jackson - 2004/2005 salary $4,900,000 - suspended 30 games - $1,633,333
Anthony Johnson - 2004/2005 salary $2,450,000 - suspended 5 games - $136,111
Reggie Miller - 2004/2005 salary $5,625,000 - suspended 1 game - $62,500

Total - $10,932,931

Now, here's the deal with salary money and suspensions. Single game salaries are based on 1/90th of a players annual salary per game suspended, so my initial mention of $12 million was a little high as I based it on an 82 game season.

According to the CBA, suspended players are included in team salary even though players are not paid during that time. The money from a suspension is split evenly between the league and the Players Association, then each donates the money to a charity or charities of their choosing. Also, neither side discloses the charities that get the money.

So way to go Pacer players - regardless of if you blame the players or the fans, end result is that some fans may lose their season tickets or possibly face criminal charges, but it just cost Indiana almost eleven million bucks.

On the plus side, there's going to be some really happy charities out there! :)

Another update just announced - the suspensions will not be staggered. So for both games where the Kings play Indiana in a couple weeks there will be no Artest, O'neal or Jackson.

now this is more what i expected. ron just had to be gone for the whole year after being involved with 2 different fans.

now will the s-jax and JO suspensions be served at the same time???

WOW just WOW. the pacers season is pretty much over. they can still make the playoffs in the east, but i don't see them going anywhere. artest is such a huge part of their team, he anchors their D and he has become a big part of their offense. it's going to kill their title hopes. the pistons have a VERY easy route to winning the east again.

and i also think JO got off a little easy considering he decked that one fan who posed no threat to him ( the fat guy in the white jersey holding the flag, and BTW i don't blame artest for clocking him, that guy wanted to fight him so artest defended himself, that guy posed NO threat to JO, JO just ran up and decked him. TOTALLY uncalled for) and also the oakland CO prosecutor said a cop told him JO cold clocked another person off camera. JO should have gotten the 30 games that jackson did.

and thats just the league part, these 3 are probably also going to be facing criminal charges. artest probably gets sued by the guy he ran up and hit in the stands ( who didn't even throw the water on him, that was someother assclown) i'm not sure what's going to happen to that idiot who artest and JO clocked as he was on the court, im not sure how that part of it works. and jackosn probably gets sued beucase he was throwing punches at random people when artest ran into the crowd. i've watched the clip many times, he's punching people along with artest.

i don't understand the 5 games anthoney johnson got, was he involoved with the women on the floor?? i understand why miller, billups, and campbell got their 1 games each for leaving the bench. the derrek coleman ones baffles me, wasn't he on the court when the fight broke out??? is he being suspended for leaving the bench????

i'm glad that rasheed and fred jones got nothing. i thought the league might have come down on sheed because he was going into the stands, but it was purely to break up the fight, he had NO intentions of throwing any punches. and poor fred jones, getting punched by ben wallaces brother (i heard that is who tht guy who punched him was) i bet he ( puncher) gets arrested, i bet the moron with the flag/white pistons jersey who went on the court gets arrested.

wow. just an ugly situation for the league. they did the right thing.

Then we'll just have to agree to disagree because I thought his justifications were completely and totally within reason.

I feel bad for the Pacer fans. :( Hopefully the remaining players until Jackson and O'Neal comes back hang in there.

I must admit I was shocked by all the the suspensions and while I don't disagree nor agree for that matter with the # of games all around I believe it was a necessary measure that Stern had to take.

oh and one last thing, i also think artest needs to be forced to take anger managment classes during the entire time he is off. he has had too many run ins, he needs to find a way to control himself.

i've no problem with any of the player suspensions. now, let's see what the local authorities do & go after the fans, as well as the detroit orginization. if any of those fans were season tix holders, they should be revoked. the fans have some accountability for all of this, for crying out loud we aren't a bunch of euros rioting after a soccer match.

I strongly suspect Ron Artest has used up his last bit of goodwill in the NBA. Anger management courses might or might not work but I think he's past redeeming himself. The ramifications of his actions, as jelement showed above, are impacting a LOT of people. I cannot imagine a team, in good conscience, signing him to any kind of new contract. The law suits alone could keep Artest tied up for years...

And the ones who suffer the most are the Indiana fans. They did nothing to deserve this, and yet their whole season is pretty much up in the air. I'll be rooting for the Pacers in all but two upcoming games. I would love to see them rise above this, but I'm afraid that only happens if Disney Productions is involved.

:(

maybe they can learn from soccer for how they punish home team fans....... which is have their next couple home games take place in an empty stadium......

As far as I'm concerned, these suspensions are beyoond moronic.

I'm sure there are a bunch of Detroit fans half naked in body paint running around high fiving each other even as we speak. By being classless and lawless, the detroit fans (with the help of their classless team) have manged in one fell swoop to essentially eliminate their single biggest rival for the eastern conference crown. There is a good set of incentives to inspire better behahavior from fans in the future. Woohoo, way to go.

If the Detroit fans don't win the "6th man" of the year award, it will be a farce.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing.

The city of Detroit should lose the Pistons for the rest of O'neal's suspension.

These Pistons fans really make the Pistons organization and players look bad. At least to me they do. I would be embarass if I'm a Piston fan. Good thing I'm not. :)

While I agree that it was time to send a very strong message to the players, I have my concerns about the ability of fans to have such a role in the outcome of championships. I agree with Doc. The Piston fans must be ecstatic today. Somehow, that seems all wrong.
