Super Hero Draft Anyone?

#31
Löwen-HURTS ... and I thought we were cool ;)

We've got about eight months (nine by some miracle) until our men in Purple head into the next TDOS so there's plenty of time to work out the specifics.

But for a reader's digest rundown, you've decided the world has gone on long enough not bending to your whim and lucky you, your choice of super villains are availble to aid you in your the conquest of Earth. But standing in your way are a collection of baddies with equal aspirations of world domination ... and of course there's always those pesky choir-boy heroes to contend with.

Any earthbound villains from comics, movies and popular culture are eligible (Sadly, the earthbound part means no Darth Vader; I asked.)

It also means *real life villains* would technically be available, but let's keep this fun and free of politics, as I can already imagine the chaos of having someone's opinion of a "real life villain" selected might cause.

And stemming from the Venom question, a hero/villain can only work for the forces of good or evil, not both. So it will either have to be decided ahead of time if there is any question as to their allegiance either before the draft or in a PM to either Commish during the draft. If a hero/villain is selected and a protest is placed as to their status as a hero or villain, the pick may be disallowed.

People can participate in either or BOTH drafts if they choose. Rules will follow the guidelines setup in the Heroes draft.

And once the playoffs start the Ultimate Super Hero Groups will take on the Ultimate Villain Groups in the final battle for supremacy.

Once we get all things squared away, we'll hammer out a proper set of guidelines for both, (I plan to commish the Villains and Jes-Purr ;) will do the Heroes) Just gauging interest for now.

So calling all my fellow evil overlords. Who's ready to bring the pain to the planet and sculpt it into your own dark image?
Just a note, since there will be a villian draft as well (which is good, because there are always more villains than heroes), then Venom undoubtedly falls into the villain category.

So how would this work? I'm assuming some sort of ranking process would take place in both drafts, and #1 heroes would take on #16 villains, etc?

Sign me up either way

If the timing works, I think a Villains vs. Heroes playoff is really best. Rank each hero and villain team 1-16 and set off the brackets March Madness Style. Lowen suggested to do this during March Madness, and if the teams were already contrived (like during dreary cold February or something) then we could have our own tournament of champions.

So how does that work, it's a question of who would win in a battle? Seems like that's veering into Roleplaying Game territory. I thought the idea was like in all the other drafts where voters just pick the collection of heroes/songs/whatever that they like best.

As in the other drafts, the voting criteria is left entierly up to the whims of the individual voter.

But, as in the Desert Island drafts, the backstory, as it were, is encouraged to be a guideline. So yes, which group would win in a fight officially, but really, which group of baddies is the most awesome ... or best 'super boy scouts" if you wanna be lame about it.

I just question whether we have sufficient people here that are hardcore enough into comics to get involved with an ongoing series of hero vs. villain matchups. Yes, if you're actually on a comic book board. Keeping to a format like the other drafts where you simply vote for your favorite 'X' might encourage enough people with passing knowledge of comics in order to get participants and voters.

It only takes 16 players, each player could have a villain group and a hero group. And yes, passing knowledge is all that is required. There is a broad pool to draw from (Movies/TV Shows/Comics/Novels/Etc.)

I'll get involved however you do it because I'm a total geek, but I'm just making a plea for general accessibilty.

Also, villains can get tricky, because there are so many that are basically ALL-powerful and could never be beaten on a power vs. power basis, except for some kind of writer's contrivance that allows the heroes to win. There's generally SOME limit to heroes powers even if they're very powerful. But if you insist, I will draft five bad guys who can rearrange all of reality with a spare thought. ;)

And that's exactly what it is. There's no uber-nerd restrictions here or debates about Superman's heat ray vision clearly being unable to melt Wolverine's adamantium claws. Who cares? Your criteria can be "coolest looking super suits" it doesn't matter. Just take a look at the "classic" car draft. I took three transformers, a video game assualt vehicle and a monster truck!

The winner of our Desert Island, stuck-with-these-for-eternity movie draft had two movies dependent on surprise endings, which really lose their appeal after the third or fourth showing.

See, guidelines, not actual rules. Draft to your hearts content my good sir.

Yep, I'd say you chose the the right side. :)

The Caped Cuss-ader

Seemed like the most appropriate place to put this given the subject matter.... ;)

Holy $#!+, Batman!
DC Comics is asking stores around the country to destroy tens of thousands of copies of a new Batman comic book because of a printing error that revealed a slew of obscenities.
"Text every friend you've got, s- - -heads," Batgirl tells a group of incredibly foulmouthed, drug-dealing thugs in "All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder" No. 10.
"Sell your poison somewhere else. This here arcade belongs to the f- - -ing Batgirl."
The S- and F-words were supposed to be blacked out, but two shades of black were used, and the expletives are clearly legible, as are the thugs' A- and F-words - and even a number of C-bombs.
While "All-Star Batman & Robin" isn't aimed at kids, it also doesn't have a "mature readers" warning on the cover.
DC caught the error earlier this week as the comic was heading to stores. They were able to stop some shipments, and asked retailers who got copies to destroy them.
DC said "a printing gaffe" caused "a problem with All-Star Batman. As soon as the problem was discovered, we quickly asked retailers to pull the issue. We apologize to our retailers and fans for any offense or inconvenience."
Several city comic-book stores said they had complied, but the book was sitting on the rack at St. Mark's Comics in the East Village yesterday.
"We've sold a lot," said store owner Mitch Cutler.
"We didn't destroy it because we couldn't know everyone would destroy it," Cutler said.
The comic is currently doing "Dark Knight"-like business on eBay, with copies selling for between $20 and $250.
Cutler was selling copies at his store for cover price, $2.99. "There's no need to inflate the price," he said. "It's wrong and evil and slimy."
Cutler said he hadn't sold any copies of the issue - or the entire series - to kids.
The title "has been full of adult content since the minute it was published. We'd never sell it to minors. The curse words make no difference."

Disclaimer: pregnant and due Aug 6th, so may miss a deadline here and there. Do not for any reason, hold up the draft for me. If I miss, skip on, I'll try to make up within 24. :)

On second thought, I'll sit this out. I know almost nothing about superheroes / villians / comic books.
