[Game] Suns @ Kings - 10/17/13

I think Mclemore will excel more with a pg that can get him the ball also. His ability to create isn't NBA ready yet and Vasquez could help in that reguard. Although can't do that with Thornton logging most of the min. Will be interesting to see what Malone does with this lineup.

He seems smarter (BBALLIQ wise) than the coaches we had here in the past few years. I believe he will know who/when to use players, and might have more of an Adelman type lineup than a Smart type lineup where someone doesn't know if/when they'll play. As long as the players play defense of course and stay on Malone's good side. I can see him going 9 deep on most nights.

In no particular order; Cousins, GV, JT, PP, Salmons, MLM, IT, MT, MAM. SF could be mixed a bit with Outlaw replacing either Salmons, or MAM.

Trivial minutes go to Jimmer, McCallum, Hayes, and whoever else makes the team out of the UDFA or FA we signed to the team during pre-season.

I don't think you can assume Luc is going to be that high in the rotation until he actually logs a minute or two on the court... ;)

With GV on the floor the team was involved and was a priority of his to get the ball to an open man. With IT on the floor the team came second and he looked for his shot first quite a few times.

The way this team is designed I believe a "pure PG" will work better so I cannot wait to see more of the GV/Cuz show. I think those two will make each other a LOT better. It's much more fun to watch than the 5 individuals we had on the floor last year.

It doesn't have to be a "pure PG" like a guy who gets you 10apg or anything. But it does have to be someone who willingly creates for others/sets guys up and at least tries to run the offense as opposed to throwing up jumpshots any time he has a little space.

Something notable over the preseason has been how he's handled DeMarcus. He's been coming out of the game with around 2-3 minute left in the 1st quarter and he's come back in with over 8 minutes left in the 2nd. One of the most infuriating things Smart did was run our starters the whole 1st quarter and then run our entire bench for 8-9 minutes in the 2nd. That's fine and dandy if the bench is hot,but it almost leaves you stuck with playing them so the starters can get a rest. Or, it forces you to go back to the starters early which hurts us in the 4th quarter as everyone is pooped.

While that has been notable, its just sad that it has come to be notable.

For those of us who argued for the last several years that Keith Smart was crapting all over our young stars and squelching their potential in favor of lesser lights, this is like a Basketball 101 validation.

Indeed. It's sad how excited i've been watching Cousins be properly handled with minutes, us having a semblance of an offensive structure, and a coach who understands the concept of momentum. Malone hasn't once let a game get away from us without calling a timeout when the other team goes on a run.

You know, stuff 98% of coaches/fans/10 year old kids know how to do

Yeah, this isn't rocket science! Which is what made it that much more frustrating. Anyone with just a lick of basketball knowledge could figure out who to start, and what our rotation should be. But there was Smart, an ironic name by the way, starting and substituting as though he had no knowledge of anyone on the team. He kept taking about how his team wouldn't quit. How they fought every game to win. The problem was, he was sending them into battle with no weapons, and no battle plan. In the military that's a recipe for a slaughter.

In years past, mistakes may have been glossed over or even ignored. Under Malone, there is a sense of urgency to address the Kings’ execution effectively and efficiently.

“Not to put any bad things on the coaches in the previous years, but we kind of didn’t nail that down,” Thomas said. “I mean if somebody messed up, it was kind of like ‘Ok, on to the next play.’ But this year, it’s just they’re teaching, teaching, teaching and we’re going into scrimmaging and we work on it.”

Shows you how bad coaching was just sad no wonder players were loosing it. And draft picks were staying away

That's basically my whole argument the last 4 or 5 years. I like a PG that is able to make players around him better because of his elite BBALL-IQ and because he can get other players easier shots.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have a PG that can get his own shot but when his play is all about "me me me" he better be good enough to carry a team, which is basically what we've struggled with the last few years.

A lot of the blame for this has to go to the coaching staff too for not using players properly.
