My neighbor kid, Tommy Salazar is the California State Snowboarding Champion. I knew that he and his friends had traveled down to Mammoth Mountain for the State Championship. When he returned, he didn't say anything about the event, so I didn't ask. I eventually found out that he had won the whole thing.
The Placerville boys team won first place, the girls third place. The Placerville team was third overall in the State. Think how they would have done if five of their best skiers and boarders had not been grounded for getting drunk at the annual Sadie Hawkings dance that took place just before the State finals? The best girl skier apparently messed up.
That's Tommy's photo on the front page of the Mountain Democrat. He is a really great kid, and works part-time in construction. He has been helping take care of his mother since his dad died of cancer on Thanksgiving Day. Sitting in their living room a few days before the State meet, I asked him if he really had a chance to win. He quietly suggested that he had "a chance." What an understatement! He neglected to mention that he was already leading the State in accumulated points. Anyway, I asked him if he wanted to go cross-country skiing with me. He declined the offer to compete in the State Snowboarding Championship instead. I sprained my knee and mashed my face in the ice. He won the State Championship. I guess it all worked out.
