one is either out on the road while the other plays at home OR sometimes one team will have an early game say a 12:30 start time and then the other team will play later on

Staples is actually a dual arena. The Clippers have their own side that's a duplicate to the Lakers' side. When the Lakers play the Clipps "on the road", they just walk over to the Clippers' side thru a tunnel.
