[Game] Spurs @ Kings (pre-season) discussion - 10/8/15

Spurs are a well oiled machine. I feel like if they randomly played in August sometime, they would still play awesome.

So that's what a made three on a kickout looks like.... take notes Ben. Anderson starting tonight is step 1 to you on the way to the bench.

Well Anderson has hit one more spot up three than Ben has in pre season. Defense has been solid on Green too.

As long as WCS plays well today, I think the starting job is his for the taking
We just look a lot better with him in the starting lineup. Though he is a rook, we are far more balanced with him next to Cousins. If crap hits the fan a few games because of rookie mistakes, we have a great 2nd option in Kosta.

I was startled a second by a voice and realized it was just Rondo calling out the Spurs plays on defense. Not used to hearing that.

Before Rondo's first playoff series against Atlanta in 2008, the Celtics distributed a 100-page book full of the Hawks' plays and statistics. Rondo took it home, then challenged assistant Darren Erman the next morning: "Quiz me on anything." Rondo nailed every question, until Erman tossed a curveball -- a question about something that wasn't in the book. "**** you," Rondo said. "That's not in there." Once, when Erman was with the Warriors, his team ran a side out-of-bounds play, called C, that he says they'd run maybe 15 times all season. They called the play. Rondo immediately shouted, "C! Rip screen, rip screen!" Erman and then-Warriors assistant Brian Scalabrine looked at each other, stunned: How in the hell did he know that?

As for Anderson starting, isn't this just Ben's night to sit?

As for Rondo and defense, he may not have bothered playing it the last couple years, but he seems capable.

But god damn the dude can still pass..

Early sighting of the point center... and not in a good way.
Good news though, his reach in finally resulted in a steal! I kind of wish they didn't...because it'll encourage him to do it more. He gets one like every 5 tries.

My early thoughts

-I was never anti-Rondo. I've long been a fan and I like his recommitment to defense and that he looks more willing to drive this pre-season.
-I feel WCS and Boogie should be the starting pair despite Trill's inexperience and limited offense. My view is thus: You want to start out with your defense stated. The bench can always fire up your offense. WCS can guard stretch 4s and recover from the perimeter. His defensive mobility is really impressive, but he is weak on reacting to rebounds. It's weird, but he understands moving before the shot goes up, but loses track once it goes up. However, Rondo and Cousins are great at rebounding and rebound position, so it balances out.
-Anderson understands how to play within the system. His start is interesting.
-I would like to see Casspi be more aggressive. I feel like he's stepped off the gas with Collison and Marco a part of the nouveau bench mob. However, this is not his game. Be aggressive Omri!
-Not a fan of the Cousins threes. Here's my point: Boogie can still stretch the defense with above the FT line jumpers. Yes, 'advanced stats' clique hates this, but actual stats do not. If you are far better at the high jumper than you are at three, then it's a far better shot. You don't ignore the obvious in pursuit of an idealogy. Hit the long 2 if you can drain it.
-Kawhi Leonard is really, really good.
-I think I saw RayMac go to dap after Rudy Gay hit a FT and then realize what he was doing. <3 Ray

George Karl may not like it, but its partially of his own doing, partially of Vlade's -- right now when you have Rondo giving a defensive effort and look around our main lineup here, its a much better defensive team than offensive team. That frontocurt defense in particular is just rock solid right across the 3 man rotation.

Am waiting to see if Karl grows a clue and figures out that Cousins talent is not being asked to attack from the 3pt line every trip and force fullcourt drives ont eh break. if that's what Karl saw that made him think Cousins is talented he needs thicker coke bottle glasses.

Give the guy 10-15 games to bind some real chemistry with his new teammates and then you really start see something in the Sleep Train Arena.
