Kevin Martin did it all tonight, scoring inside, outside, and every which way imaginable, pouring in 53 points in DMC's 123-116 loss to Doc's/Pro Med in the final game of the SPDL regular season. Martin's lofty scoring tally was the highest individual scoring performance in the league this summer. The Kings' guard wound up as the second leading scorer in the SPDL with a 39.3 ppg average, behind Mike Bibby's 40.0 ppg recorded in only two games.
Special K saved his best for the second half, bucketing 31 points in leading his team back from a 20-point deficit to close within 4 points in the final 2 minutes. He scored on 3-pointers, leaners in the lane, lay-ins after executing killer corssover dribbles, pretty little scoop shots, and breakaway dunks.
Martin's most impressive score was mid-3rd quarter, when he raised up for a trey, drawing his defender skyward. He then drop-stepped just inside the arc in an attempt to draw the foul (which was committed but not whistled) and then calmly drained the 22-footer.
All in all, there were some incredible offensive performances by individuals on both teams, and the game was most enjoyable to watch. The fans really got into this one moreso than any other SPDL game I attended over the last month. The overall defensive play in the game was shoddy, although it tightened up considerably in the 4th quarter.
I spoke with Kevin at halftime, inquiring as to what his plans were for tomorrow night's all star game. Kevin said, "I'm not playing; I've got Las Vegas next week." But then, when I told him that Kingsgurl, who was not able to attend tonight's game, would be disappointed since she wanted to see him play tomorrow night, he replied, "Well, I might...you never know."
So those planning on attending tomorrow night's SPDL all star game (tipoff at 7 PM at Capital Christian HS), please know that it is not a certainty that either Martin or Matt Barnes will be there.
I captured a few post-worthy photos and will post them later on this evening.
Oh yeah, and those of you already placing Garcia in front of Martin on the Kings' depth chart may be acting a bit prematurely.
