Sixers hire Jordan...

GP can't interview Rambis until after the WCF are over. I wonder if he plans to interview anyone else. GP did say he'd like to have the coach in place before the draft, though.

I'll almost guarentee that Rambis is brought in for an unprecidented 3rd HC interview with the Kings after the season...and who knows, it might just be his turn...finally.

I think when it's all said and done, Petrie will have to chose from:

Tom Thibedeau
Paul Westphal
Avery Johnson
Mo Cheeks
Kurt Rambis
Byron Scott(if the Maloofs buy out the last year of his contract and NOLA releases him...doubtful)

Where does that leave Brian Shaw? Last time around GP wanted him but the Maloof's insisted on Reggie Theus. Before that, GP was said to be asking for Rick Adelman to remain, but the Maloof's went gaga over a Musselman power point presentation. At least so far this time, the owners have said they're basically removed from the process and will likely sign off on whoever GP recommends.

I think half the names on this list are not under consideration at all for reasons discussed a thousand times here recently.

Avery Johnson isn't in the picture.

Please dear God no Kurt Rambis!!! Your fans already are already down as it is why would you bring this clown in!!! I'd so rather go with Thibodeau if were going to take another risky pick... at least Thibodeau is well known as a great teacher and a player development specialist

This is great news!

Based on nothing, isnt Thibodeau the front runner right now?

I'd guess Westphal is the front runner right now based on Petrie's comment that he gave "a very impressive interview overall." and we haven't heard anything about Thibodeau and I think he already interviewed.

what about ettore messina i havent heard anything from him

in the carmicheal dave interview of gavin maloof he DID say that they would deviate if need be from the coaching requirements

JVG nor Collins are interested in the Kings job. Collins just wanted to return to Philly, and he didn't have any other location on his radar. JVG was reported to have no immediate interest in returning to the league, and would probably not want the Kings job anyway.

You might be right, but since the sixers job is no longer available I would like to see the kings go after them. They both might be more open to coaching the kings now that the sixers are not an option. I would think JVG might consider the job given he grew up in the bay area... but who knows. But I do like both those guys more than any other names which have been thrown around. Westphal doesn't excite me. I could care less about rambis. Thibadeau is a dark horse, no head coaching experience, but has the defensive pedigree to be given an opportunity.

Since the Maloofs are hoping to pay no more than about $2 million for a coach, some of the guys people are listing are not going to be interested.

I can't help but think Brian Shaw might get an interview again. The Lakers granted permission to interview Rambis after the WCF (now). Maybe they won't grant permission for a Shaw interview until after the finals, if the Kings are still interested in him..

we need to have an idea or at least get a coach weeks before the draft so he would know who are being scouted and who are those who would fit in HIS system..

GP has said he wants a coach in place before the draft. I would have to think all the candidates are going to be pretty darn familiar with the draftees likely to be available to the Kings at #4. So I don't think they need weeks to express their opinion once hired.

a month to go.. you have to admit this is one of the most exciting off seasons... ive been seeing a lot of people view the forums lately.

If we hire Rambis, that will be two coaches in a row (not counting Natt as the interim) who have been hired that had roles as basketball coaches on a television series. Maybe we would need to start to question whether our front office can distinguish between fictional coaches and actual caoches.

Just kidding around.

I wonder if Petrie talked with Messina at all during his euro trips? I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about his coaching style but his teams are successful... With the current list of names as possibilities I don't see how it would hurt us to not give him a chance. Only Bryon Scott on that list, and to a much lesser extent Thibodeau would get me excited.... Hopefully the coach search ramps up this upcoming week..

shaft rambis... go for messina!! he may be the key also to draw in said point guard...

what do they ask these potential coaches in the interviews any ways!?

Good coaching questions, like what is your favorite color? Then they do some word association. Or, if the coach is really prepared, he'll show off a powerpoint...

if your answer to number 3 is B then congratulations you are the new head coach!

I'm sure it is mostly about their coaching philosophy, what they think of the current personel, and how their philosophy meshes with the current players. I'm sure I'm stating the obvious.

My question is, all that info would be valuable to petrie, but not the maloofs. The maloofs are basically very rich basketball fans, but petrie is the one that really knows the game, the system he wants, and what to look for in a coach, which takes years of nba experience. I don't really see why the maloofs are part of all these interviews. They have proven over the past few years that they really don't know much about what it takes to win in the nba.

I'm glad that Jordan is off the board. I think it's a pretty good move for Philly actually if they can just sign or draft a shooter or 2.

Anybody else getting the feeling that we're gonna see another new head coach next season or midseason?

Report: Kings Set to Rehire St. Jean
Saturday, May 30, 2009
By Tish Folluf

Frustrated in their efforts to turn back the coaching clock to the Eddie Jordan era in Sacramento, the Kings have apparently decided to reach back even further.

Gary St. Jean, 158-256 in five seasons at the helm of the Kings in the mid 1990s, is reportedly set to be announced on Monday as Sacramento's new head coach.

St. Jean, who led the Kings to their first playoff appearance in the Sacramento era in 1996, understands the challenges ahead of him.

"Frankly, we're just not very good right now," he said. "But one of the reasons that Geoff (Petrie) told me they wanted to hire me was because I have experience coaching teams nearly as bad."

Per team policy terms were not disclosed, but St. Jean's deal is believed to be for five years.

"We wanted to try to restablish some consistency at the coaching positon," Petrie said. "We felt the best way to avoid the turnover problems we have been having was to award Gary with a longer term deal."
