Since When is McCants a bust?

the guy can flat out score, that's about it but he is definitely a deadly scorer

I remember in the draft workouts he made like 42 straight 3's or something like that.

the guy scored 15 PPG on 45% shooting

including 2 three's a game and shooting 40% from behind the arc.

the kid has MAJOR potential and can be deadly in the right system..

He's the most talented player we traded for. As long as he doesn't force the issue on offense, which he has a reputation of doing, he could be a good signing. He has the ability to be a consistent spark off the bench but his selfishness on the offensive end took him out of the rotation in Minnesota. I hope he treats this as a fresh start and just plays his butt off.

Since about the time that his B.S. became so much about him and him only that even a rebuilding team like Minneosta decided they were better off just benching him entirely (and prompty going on a long winning streak).

He's still definitely got the talent to defy the bust label, but he really is his own worst enemy. Sometimes wonder about guys like that. 20 years later when they are trying to work their way up to head lettuce washer at the local McDonalds are they ever going to look back and realize that they completely blew it? Some guys just don't have the talent. But to have the talent and just be such a pain in the *** that nobody wants to deal with you and to lose one of the best jobs in the world because of your own issues...would make for a sucky old age sitting around thinking about missed glory years.

The problem is that you are utilizing logical thinking. With players like that, you need a Bobby Knight. Someone to tear you down and build you back up again. With him, you either sink or swim, but it's 100% one way or the other. McCants will not wake up until teams completely give up on him, but as long as they hope that he uses that talent, he will believe that it's the system, not him. In all honesty, how did he not break into the lineup in Minny? He has all the tools to average 20+, and NO scorers in MN in his way. Weird.

He's not a bust, actually. I mean, he was a scorer out of college only, and he has scored here in the league (13 ppg last year, one of the better scorers for the TWolves' pathetic offense last year). The problem is when people develop further expectations of him--that he needs to pass, that he needs to make good decisions, that he needs to play better D. Those are all within the realm of possibility for him, but so far it has yet to sink in as his ego and immaturity have all but gotten in the way and pissed people off (apparently pissed the TWolves front office off). But the scoring is there already--I guess the next best thing for him, assuming that he doesn't grow a brain, is for him to average 20 ppg by jacking up tons of shots and becoming a 6'4" version of John Salmons, but I think that would make him even more polarizing. So we should really egg him on to just grow a brain and develop an all-around game that would certainly help us and help him in the long run as free agency occurs.

I wouldn't call him a bust, just inconsistent and flawed. The consensus was that he's an undersized SG who probably doesn't have the tools to develop into a respectable PG.
Look back on his DraftExpress.com profile:

They had his Best Case at Voshon Lenard who was never more than a shooter for hire and his Worst Case as Joe Forte who completely flamed out of the league on and off the court.

If he gets a chance here and does nothing with it, then maybe he is a bust because he needs to play well in Sacramento and show something or else the only offers he'll get this summer are going to be from overseas.

My question with McCants is how he is going to deal with playing behind Martin and getting limited minutes? Is he going to be a "sparkplug" or is going to sulk?

He's an expiring contract. If he pouts or sulks, he's only going to hurt his chances of getting a decent deal in the free agency pool.

If McCants is smart or even just not stupid, he'll accept his fate and do whatever he's asked. If he does have point guard skills, now would definitely be the time to utilize them...

He's been kind of a bust considering his draft position, I'm sure that Minnesota would have been happier with David Lee, Danny Granger, Monta Ellis, or even our own Francisco Garcia, who were all picked later.

I agree with the consensus that he can overcome that rep if he grows a brain. Otherwise, there's always Europe.

The guys rebounding scares me as well. Mugsy Bogues could rebound better than this guy. I think the last thing this team needs is another shoot first scorer. We don't need the same type of player backing up Martin. At some point were going to need to get guys with different skill sets to back up the starters (or become starters). We pretty much get worse in every area when it comes to taking out Martin and putting in McCants. Thats usually the case with a teams best player, but our best player is an A+ scorer and a below average every thing else. We need a Bonzi, Hassell or Christie type of guy who excels in something Martin doesn't, like playing D, passing or rebounding.

I don't see a need for more offense. Especially with Hawes and Thompson being so young, that part is only bound to improve. Were middle of the road when it comes to team scoring and 2nd to last in points allowed. I don't see how a guy like McCants is going to close the gap there. He's going to allow as much or more than he's going to get. We need someone who can spread the ball around and lock down on their defender to sure up the D.

I am really not a fan due mainly to his attitude. But hey, its a good scenario for us: He doesnt play well or keeps up the 'tude, and we let him walk and sign with someone else. if he does perform we can grab him back. I'm not oppoosed to the situation.

Pretty much how I feel, and I'm sure most people here in Sac will give him the same clean slate to start with...hopefully he utilizes it to his advantage.
