I think we may have to put our mini-schnauzer down soon.

She's about 11, but has been diabetic for a 2-3 years and apparently now has a pretty serious case of pancreatitis (sp?). She's been at the vet for most of the past week while they try to get her insulin dosage and treatment under control, but she really isn't eating at all and is on an IV just to get some calories in her for the insulin shots.

She isn't doing well and has dropped over 20% of her wieght.

This really sucks, and my wife is having a hard time with it. Our little guy prayed last night for God to make more little gray schnauzers like ours and to make DJ better.

Somehow I don't think she's going to get any better, though.

That's a tough combination to combat according to several vets we've talked to. We should find out more later today when the vet gets more test results back.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. One of the toughest things in life is to deal with the loss of a pet when you have young children.

We had to put our dog of 12 years down in November as his kidneys were failing. I think what made me the most sad was thinking how my kids were going to respond. By chance a few months ago we were at Petsmart(unsure really why we went there) and there was a dog up for adoption that, from the neck down, looked exactly like our old dog. My kids almost cried when they saw the dog and we ended up adopting it. It's been a great dog(although it is still a puppy and gets into things).

Being a former dog owner myself, my deepest sympathies. :(

But at least your dog is getting some care and treatment in a dignified manner. (Unlike that of a certain ex-football player whose name I won't mention right now).

Just talked to my wife who spoke with the vet. She's doing worse. We're going to have her put down tonight. :( We're probably going to cremate her and put her ashes under a newly planted tree at our new house when we can.

Damn.

I'm so sorry to hear about your furry friend, Warhawk. Bless you for loving her and taking care of her so well all her life.

I'm sorry to hear about your pet. They are more like family than animals. My heart goes out to you and your family, esp the kids. In my thoughts and prayers.

Pets are like family and when a pet dies, your heart is broken. I'm glad that your little min-schnauzer was so loved by you and your family.

Funny thing about your post - we are doing about the same thing. :D

My wife got a call from our groomer for our dog that passed away (DJ), saying that she had a family that couldn't keep a 2-year old miniature schauzer and she knew that was the kind of dog we would want to get when we were ready for another.

We went to see the dog, a miniature schnauzer named Schotzie, who looks a LOT like our old one. He's very nice, calm, good with other animals, and likes to play fetch.

Here's our old dog, DJ:

And here is our new one, Schotzie:

The only problem is that our back yard is still mostly dry weeds and no place for a dog to stay during the day. So instead of me doing the landscaping slowly (this summer project), we need to have a landscaper do a good chunk of the work immediately since we only have a couple more weeks until we have to bring him home.

Yay. :o This is one expensive dog. ;) But well worth it, and this way the yard is done much sooner and my wife is happier. Right now he stays here on weekends while we are home and at a dog border during the week (part of the groomer's facility). My wife (a teacher) is off of school after next week, so she will probably keep him here for most of the time after that.

We are VERY excited to have a new 4-legged miniature schauzer friend again. :D Even if I do keep calling him a "her" out of habit.

Congrats, Warhawk! Sounds like you have found a new one to love...and one that will love you back. Thats fantastic!:)

Congrats Warhawk! :D Wonderful for the family and apparently beneficial for the yard, too. ;)

My friend in Nove Scotia is bringing home a mini Schnauzer puppy next week. Already named Minerva or Minnie, for short. I think they are adorable dogs.

It's been 18 months since I lost my dog Kenna. I'm getting that "itch" to get a new friend.

Unfortunately, my 13 year-old cat, Bonnie is in primary renal failure and down to about 6.5 pounds. I'll let her have peace and quiet, rather than bring home a new dog right now. Well as peaceful and quiet as it can be with my wild 8 year-old cat Haley in the house. ;)
