If Shaq can somehow conjure up some of the old energy this might not be too bad of a move really. The Suns have shown they do need a solid inside presence at least defensively against the likes of Bynum, Duncan, etc. I don't expect that the Suns are counting on Shaq to run fast breaks, but they at least want him to play some solid defense, pull down some boards and generally just clog up the lane. I have a feeling we might see him a bit rejuvenated and not quite as washed up as he seemed in Miami now that he's in a new setting with a better team. Will it be enough though? And will it last?

Of course, this could also very easily backfire and the Suns may have been just as well of picking up Keon Clark or taking Kenny Thomas off our hands to fill the same role.

Forgive the indulgence. Don't have time to keep up w/ all the threads or stories but i am curious about Shawn Marion. What went wrong w/ him and the Suns. I thought everything was going so well over there even if they weren't winning Championships. They were spectacular to watch. Offensive juggernaut. Anybody have a minute to enlighten me...

Wow the days of the high octane Suns offense looks like it officially ended. Well look at Dallas last year and how there didn't look like they had much competition and see how GS took them out in the 1st round? The Suns also saw how their fun and fast offense wasn't going all the way and bringing them any championships so they are making a big change.
I don't see how this is the best trade for the Suns especially with shipping away Marion who is an athletic freak and just plain entertaining to watch and entering a big old ogre who is over the hill in Mr. Shrek!

I read somewhere that Shawn wasn’t happy about not getting recognition for what he does. I don’t get it cause he was a big part of leading the team. I also hear that he wanted to get some offensive touches (the coach keeps changing his position and he does a lot of the defense so he wanted some more touches on the offensive side).
It seems that the Suns panicked. The Pau trade really affected them (and I’m sure more team are looking for big moves). But the Suns want to win now. I think it’s over for them as a championship team. They had their opportunities, especially last year (which got screwed up), but it’s over, unless Shaq injects the team with a lot of magic.

I like this trade for Phoenix. It's now or never for them with Nash and Grant Hill and it definitely makes sense to get Shaq to help them in 4th quarter situations when the game slows down. Maybe Lakers getting Gasol also influenced this decision.
Marion is a good player, but Diaw is ok too.
The really scary part about this is that the other team will have to put their strongest guy on Shaq, so that Amare is going to be able to anything he wants...

One possible sticking point beyond the fact that 2 athletic big forwards were a tough cover:
In a halfcourt game, opponents will be able to recover for treys easier than they would in their semi-transition game. Open treys are what used to kill the Lakers, specifically. An open trey literally ended the 06 series.

Got to love it. Lakers vs. Suns in a series. The Lakers want a piece of that so bad!!!!! Heard Bynum is right on schedule and reports indicate that you wouldn't even be able to tell he was hurt. That with about 4 weeks to go before he can play. The Suns panicked. Sweet revenge coming up. There is a God!!!
PS... Bynum is rehabbing 4 hours a day and spends 3 hours a day watching tape of Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, and David Robinson! Got to love his work ethic!!!!

i still dont get how the suns missed out on gasol... you would think that marion would be a better trade piece than kwame.... but this could work out for the suns he just needs to play 15-20 minutes a game during the rest of the season to make sure he's in shape for the playoffs.... then after that he can play as many as he needs to win... cause whoever has to defend amare will be abused...

When the game slows down in playoffs and when you need that one basket you could go to your post player to get that
Post player could be Amare and Shaq will just ensure that there is no double team coming from the other big man else it will be a dunk from Shaq
Shaq could post up and still same problem, you have the two of them surrounded with good three point shooters and you cant really leave them open
Rebounding is vastly improved even if he cant move, he will just occupy more space and can box out so that the other guys can rebound
Offensive rebounding is also improved and might get more put backs

Suns will taste their own medicine when teams run on them, they have been addressing fast break for their team when Shaq gets the rebound but where it will hurt them more is when teams run on them, which many have shown right now
Spurs have a controlled fast break with Manu and Parker
Jazz can run with Deron
Warriors only run
Lakers have been running this year and their big men can really run and finish
Hornets were giving the suns problems with their running game already with Paul
Shaq's biggest liability is defense and he hasnt shown that he can guard those faster big men anymore
- Can he really guard Duncan, Bynum, Gasol, Webber, Harrington, Chandler without getting in foul trouble
- Can he play pick and roll defense with Nash, I see Parker and Duncan playing pick and roll all game long with them exploiting both of them on defense
- With Marion gone can they really compensate on the boards. Who is going to defend some of the players that he was taking on, are they seriously thinking about grant hill being the guy.
- They didnt need any backup pg so far but what if they had a situation in the playoffs, barbosa doesnt strike fear as a pg, he is a shoot first second and third guy and without ref help i dont seem him being much of a factor other than his hot shooting streaks he gets into sometimes.
Even the suns fans cringe whenever he shoots the ball and they are asking for his trade
- When bell got in foul trouble against some of the guards there was marion to backup, who will backup bell and marion now
While there are possibilities of this ending in a ring, I see more negative sum than what they can achieve in this trade

Ssss, I'm still pissed at 93. That was the other would-be LA defeat of Phx in the 1st round. That one was caused by Re F. Eree, tho. You lose those series on one play and history forgets that you were that close. I know you know.
