Shaq traded... (title updated)

Suns had no chance at a Championship with their current team. They would get trounced by any team with a center. This is a good move. High risk, but also very high reward.

You're missing my point. I'll try and clarify: The Suns don't NEED Shaquille O'Neal on the court in the way some teams make bad or questionable trades to fill desperate needs. What they might need is an end to the rumored locker room chemistry problems. Maybe they made the best deal possible that doesn't make any other team in the West stronger. Sending Marion to the Heat doesn't really hurt Phoenix as far as competitors are concerned.

I didnt mean to sound like a smart ***, sorry if I came across that way. What I meant to say is that the suns needed three things and shaq (in the suns warped view) is the answer to those three things.

In my opinion they needed someone who could actually rebound, and play d. consistently. He has the size but this is not "Laker Shaq" and I believe the suns have the notion that they might be getting something close to "laker shaq".

Even in his prime rebounding and team defense (see 2004 finals) were not the diesels strong points.

So they dont need shaq, but they need the possibility of Shaq.

Did I make sense?

Might not have happened if the Lakers hadn't gotten Gasol. That wasn't nice, was it? :)

I think the trade helps them against LA in the sense that Bynum really hasn't had much experience against Shaq to speak of. He may be an old bucket, but he is a vet and he is given leeway to push and shove. I can see Bynum in foul trouble a couple games of a 7-gm series. Odom is going to be guarded by Hill and Diaw. Mismatches to say the least; he held his own against Marion.

On the flip side, they want him to play defense? They'd better come up w/ a new reason for their fans because even I have to give those dolts more credit than to buy that one. Shaq is physically busted.

Im excited all this is happening in the Pacific, should help the Kings get a bit competive too, and Shaq being back will bring a bit more fun in the Kings vs Suns / Suns vs Lakers games.

Miami has already traded their #1 pick to the T-Wolves.

It's a worthwhile gamble by the Suns. This put pressure on Dallas to do something, they could use a guy like Artest.

looks like everyone in the west is going for the gold right now, this season. possibly next season but at least our team has young talent, atheleticism, and have developed a chemistry under reggie. hopefully in a few years these teams (minus new orleans, portland, etc) will be too old to hang with the kings

Here's an angle I haven't seen mentioned anywhere yet: how does this trade affect the "do over" against Atlanta?

If Shaq starts to get motivated with being on a contender (and this is a big IF), lookout for the Suns to make some serious noise.

I'm assuming the Heat have another shot at losing the same ball game, this time without Shaq. But you're right, is it still a ''do over'' if it's not the same team?

I'm guessing Shaq for Marion and Marcus Banks. It looks like the Suns are make or break at this point. Always felt Marion was the heart of the team; super defender, best rebounder, best fastbreak finisher, best alley whoop finisher. Without Marion Nash isn't as effective around the basket or the fastbreak. Shaq and Amare are very similar if Nash dominates the ball. Maybe when Nash is resting Suns will play Shaq down low instead of Diaw in high post. Suns just can't get past Spurs. Reminds me of the Kings and Lakers somewhat.

I think this is a great trade for both teams. Heat get rid of the old unmotivated diesel and get a great versatile player in marion who will be great with wade. The suns now give themselves a chance to beat the spurs. You all should know by now that Shaq is only good on a winning team. If his team sucks he plays like crap, when he is on a winner he gives it his all. I expect to see a motivated Shaq play really well. Not the Shaq from before but much better than he has been. Suns just might win it this year.

This pretty much tells us Kidd will be going to Dallas after all...

I don't like the trade for Phoenix, but I understand it. They're preparing for the playoffs (the Spurs, really). Playoff games are usually half-court games, and since Phoenix's style of play hasn't gotten them a championship yet, they probably hope that Shaq can put them over the top

Why can’t we come up with a lopsided trade that benefits us...I guess these gm’s are trying to outdo one another. I don’t see how Shaq can keep up with the suns, that’s my first concern and the fact that he really hasn’t been healthy is also a problem.

Jerry Brown of the East Valley Tribune: "Sources said both Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire were asked on Tuesday for their reaction to O'Neal possibly joining the team, and both were in favor of the move. The Suns would make the deal in order to move Stoudemire back to the power forward spot -- which Marion currently occupies -- and give the team a legitimate big man to battle players like San Antonio's Tim Duncan, Los Angeles' Andrew Bynum and New Orleans' Tyson Chandler. A move that would add O'Neal and subtract Marion who has finished Phoenix fast breaks for nine seasons with his high-flying, athletic abilities would certainly slow the Suns' trademark fast-paced game. But while the Suns still average 109.4 points a game, second to Golden State in the NBA, their running game has already been more muted than past seasons under coach Mike D'Antoni and chemistry issues have dogged the team since Marion demanded a trade two days before training camp."

Sources: Shaq passes physical, traded to Suns in Marion deal

Diesel will be chugging out West.

In one of the most improbable trades in NBA history, the Miami Heat traded Shaquille O'Neal to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

O'Neal had traveled to Phoenix Wednesday morning to take a physical, which he presumably passed.

The Miami Herald first reported on its Web site Tuesday night that the Heat informed O'Neal that they were shopping him and that talks with the Suns were serious.

Marion and O'Neal were reportedly both in favor of the trade, with sources telling ESPN.com on Tuesday that the Heat center was eager to leave his deteriorating relationship with Miami coach Pat Riley.

O'Neal talked to Suns players including Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire, The Arizona Republic reported on Wednesday. "I will not let you down," O'Neal reportedly told Nash on the phone.

This, my friends, is what happens when you hire Steve Kerr as your "brain" trust. Of all the many many things that they must have been offered for Marion, they end up with a 36 year old $20mil a year 14pt 7reb center.

The little I've seen of him this season, he looks like he's jumping in oatmeal. He's just not even close to being the old Shaq.

Shaq is going to be next to useless when Phoenix is playing another run & gun team, but if they're battling a team that slows it down (Spurs, perhaps) and speed is less of an issue... Shaq is and always will be a big mother****** that gets in the way.
