Man it sounds like we are passing up a GREAT COACH for Whisenant! If we really do(and I believe we will) I will have to bang my head on a wall. I mean dang, Elie has all the tools and Whis has no experience, no respect, no anything. I'm really dissapointed with Joe and Gavin after seeing that quote.

Damn! Alot of posts in the last few days in this thread.

I think it will be interesting to look back on this crazy thread at the All Star break. Be interesting to see if anybody would retract their crazy outbursts. :p

From everything Ive seen of Coach Whiz... An a** kisser is something id never think of seeing him called. Tough as nails, passionate, smart bball iq, high iq, good judge of talent are just some of the things I think about when I think of Coach Whiz.

Also, Coach is by far not in the poorhouse. He made alot of money with Real Estate and construction. Building some 600 homes.

Elie has become one of the leading candidates to take over the Sacramento Kings, offering the sort of contagious passion for the game and determination to succeed that became such a huge part of the Rockets' glory days.

I'm glad to see my take on Mario Ellie has now been validated! I feel much better! Too bad no one in the Bee is smart enough to write something like this! The Bee just has a bunch of bandwagoners that take a hot topic and ride till it's no longer popular, (cough...Voisen...cough...cough)! Rediculous!

Big time players come up with big plays in big games! Ellie had that attribute as a player and I feel that will translate over to his coaching career!

All the people who thought it wouldn't work if it is working great by then of course they will retract their statment but with him we just don't know, we are more sure that Elie would be a success than him at this point in time.

I hope they announce it soon, if Whiz is the coach then whats the hold up.

My guess is the Maloofs will provide "surface" answers to your questions, Padrino. They'll say he knows the game of basketball, that they have every confidence the Kings players - some of the very best in the league, blah, blah, blah - will step up and work with the coach. They'll say something about taking chances being the only way to win. They'll remind the fans somehow about Ron Artest. And at the end, they'll remind all of us that we're "the best fans in the league" and they know we'll give Whis a chance and support him 100%...

Hey VF.. You source let you look into the future to see the press conference as well? That totally sounds like something they will say. I am going back to this post once they have the press conference :D I am sure it will sound like what you posted above. hehehe.

Just read it again. LOL Spot on VF :D

That article just brings even higher my opinion for Elie..he's so perfect a coach for a "new" team that i cant believe the Maloofs have taken this coach whiz thing so far...

No formal announcement of a press conference has come out yet. We may have a couple of more days to wait until the "BIG NEWS" is actually confirmed by the Maloofs.

I know this sounds crazy but what if the Maloofs are holding out trying to convince Elie(or Musselman) to join Whisenant on the Kings bench at a higher salary and make them Assistant Head Coach and let him learn under Whisenant for a couple of years???

I guess I'm just reaching but with the publics outcry about this "hire" I can't understand for the life of me why the Maloofs would go through with it.

Because they don't make their business decisions based on the reaction of the fans.

If they had, we would never have seen the gold uniforms after day one...

;)

Whis isn't going to leave the Monarchs in the middle of their season for an assistant coaching job, even if it is with the Kings.

oh god dont get me started on those jerseys...so with the gold jerseys and a WNBA coach are people gonna start calling us the "Golden Girls"? bad joke.......HIRE ELIE!

This is a nightmare!!!!!!

I am waiting here nervously hoping that Coach Whis is NOT announced as the coach of the Kings. Coach Whis is an amateurish choice. I am shattered :(

Some guest on KHTK (I think it was Sam Amick?) said that Musselman has given the best interview so far, had a very well prepared presentation, used powerpoint, etc. How interesting. Whoever it is though, I almost wish the Kings would just announce who it is and put us out of our misery.

Yes!

I was just thinking... If this whole thing is false, this would be the greatest practical joke by VF or anyone for that matter of all time...

Interesting theory we've been discussing on another board:

Maybe, the Maloofs sensed that Kings fans were against firing Adelman and worried that there would be a lot of controversy when they actually hired E-Muss or Elie. Fans would be saying, "you fired a coach with over 700 wins for Vancouver's assistant or a rookie coach just because he played with Avery Johnson?" As a marketing ploy, they spread false rumors that they were hiring a personal friend with zero NBA experience. They knew there would be great sorrow and backlash by Kings fans, given a week to contemplate the utter stupidity of such a move. Then at the point the Maloofs announced the hiring of E-Muss or Elie, Kings fans would rejoice as if it were Red Auerbach or Phil Jackson. Public criticism would be averted, not because the candidate was any more qualified than Adelman, but by virtue of the candidate not being a competely disasterous choice like JW.

So why would JW go along with a plan that seems to draw a lot of public criticism against him? Winning back-to-back championships is one of the harder feats in sports. People lose hunger and focus. What if the Maloofs got JW's buy-in for this marketing stunt to unify the Monarchs. This would create early season controversy that they might lose their coach. He comes back looking like a loyal hero who could never leave his team. He uses the public backlash to stress how undervalued the women's team is. JW could say, "people didin't think a WNBA coach was as qualified as a men's coach," "they didn't believe our championship was enough, they thought we were a fluke," or "the Maloofs were willing to steal your coach for the Kings, what makes them more valuable, when's their last championship, let's win a second to their none."

With one PR leak (which really has never been the Kings style), the Maloofs could take a lot of pressure off the new Kings coach and remotivate the Monarchs and their fans for another championship run.

Another poster there commented:

"Kingsgurl and I were discussing exactly that twisted PR ploy this evening. This thing has been leaked by inside sources to the media and even other Kings boards as early as last week, before the interviews even began. Grant has been spouting this as an inevitability for some time.

Does this make sense?

The only fly in the ointment of your theory is that Whiz, the Maloof family friend, would have had to have been a tool all along in this process. Two scenarios there...a willing tool and an unwilling tool. Maybe Whiz really didn't want the job, told Joe and Gavin early in the "game", and the brother spinsters decided to try to make some "use" of this with planned leaks of information to rile up the crowd and follow your line of reasoning after someone else gets hired. Might make us forget that those other guys interviewed, although they have great future potential, were not really as qualified as RA.

It's crazy, I know, but so is the whole situation of pursuing Whiz in the first place."

I had that same thought about Elie.

Problem is, that it is extremely hard to see that when those guys are actulaly MORE qualified than the guy they are supposed to be apprenticing under. What's he going to teach them? How to win at the AAU level? It would make some ense if we had taken the Nellie gambit for instance to try to convince Elie to come join his staff and get the Avery treatment (Elie was also a former Nellie player). But if its Whis, hard to see them going for that.

I do think Whisenhart is absolutely going to need some experienced assistants to even have a chance, but I'm thinking more along the lines of old, established, lifetime assistant coaches ratehr than young guys who think they should be the man (and may well be right).

Depends on a couple factors. If Whiz does not paln to coach more than one or two season or if the Maloofs see him as a temp for other reasons they may try to a lure a highly qualified assistant like Musselman or Elie based on the idea that the head coaching job is theirs if things work out.

That does not make sense. Why not hire Musselman or Elie right off the bat. They are more qualified. I still don't think the maloofs will hire Whiz. It is just too ridiculous to comprehend.

Wow, I just changed my spelling of "Musselman" on the basis of Celt's text message. I need to take two aspirin tablets and go to bed before I hurt myself. ;)

^^The irony of that is marvelous... And Celt, brace yourself, has the proper spelling.

;)

I believe he's now eligible for consideration about canonization. I think it takes two miracles for sainthood.

;)

Actually, that theory has been addressed here as well as at bleachermob. Of course, the theory that the Maloofs have been taken over by alien life forms (check their basement for pods) was also brought up somewhere on here...

At this point, I would just like them to do SOMETHING. This is TDOS. We need to be focusing on outrageous trade proposals and obscure draft predictions.

;)

Just got an email from my brother in Sacto -- he says that Jim Crandel (sp?) of Fox? -- anyway, local news sports anchor tonight was claiming that the Maloofs are aware of how negative the Whisenhart reaction has been and that they therefore are going to interview some more candidates, including possibly Nellie?

Can anybody confirm? I'm getting this secondhand.

Oh... no... Even don't try that, please.
I prefer Whiz than Nellie.
