If it IS Whis, how about give him a chance.

You know, this is REALLY irritating.

NO ONE on this board that I can recall, with one possible exception, has said they're not going to give him a chance. Once the announcement is made official - and it will be - then we Kings fans will, as we always do, give the new guy on the block a clean slate. A chance to prove what he can do in the uniform (or suit, in this case) of the Sacramento Kings.

That doesn't mean people can't voice their objections, their fears, their concerns, their disbelief, etc.

I've seen this franchise through thick and thin, through Garry St. Jean and Bill Russell, through Jerry Reynolds (twice) and through Rick Adelman. That's about as wide a swing of the pendulum as you'll ever see. And I continue to love this team.

But I'm not going to stand there on the sidewalk and applaud the emperor's new clothes just because HE thinks they look great. And I don't think anyone else who is concerned about this should have to, either.

I was one of the most vocal opponents of Peja for Artest trade because of concerns about Ron Artest. Once the trade was done, however, all that became irrelevant. Ron Artest is a Sacramento King and I'm glad of it.

It's not that any of us who are posting our objections are going to boo Whis the first time he steps out as the head coach of the Kings. We will support him and wish sincerely that he is able to get the job done.

So, please...don't act like we're going to go Philadelphia on his arse. That's not the way Kings fans greet their team or their coach.

The bottom line is, is that the players are more than likey going to think the EXACT same way that Brick, me, and the majority of this board are thinking. He's going to tell them things and they are going to think to themselves "What the hell does he know? He doesn't know anything about the NBA..." Think about it, it's like an Algebra teacher trying to help you with Trig. The fact is, is that there is no doubt in my mind that the fact that he has never played the game nor has he ever had any sort of NBA experience will run through the players mind when he's telling them what to do. He'll say for instance "Front this guy and you rotate" And they'll think to themselves "That doesn't work in the NBA, F that..." I'm not saying this team will totally turn a deaf ear, but they won't have ears open like they would with the likes of an Elie who commands respects, has won it before, and has NBA experience. Because you as a player can't think to yourself "What the hell does he know about the NBA?" To a Mario Elie...

Okay.

I haven't followed or read every page of this thread, but have checked it a number of times and from what I saw a bunch of people are against the possible move. Hopefully what you said is right about the community/board, Vee F.

I don't expect people to boo him, that'd be just idiotic. Nor do I expect people to go Philly on his arse.

Oh, of course! ;)

No. I'm open to it if he is, indeed, the coach that's been selected. :)

Ditto - not my first choice (or even second), but I have to go on the basis that they want to win it as bad as I want them to and they won't make a monumental blunder in choosing a coach.

Upon what do you base this?

Wanting to win, and having a bleeping clue HOW to win are two entirely different things, as is not tripping over your ego along the way. Ask Al Davis. Ask Jerry Jones. Ask Daniel Snyder.

While I do not like this move (I want him to stay with the Monarchs), this was probably his last year coaching the Monarchs anyway.

I am thinking this: If a really good coach (that the Maloof family likes and could live with) becomes available (let's say next season, or even mid-season) then they already have a family friend, who was planning to step down from the coaching side of the house, could be asked to resign and say that "the NBA just takes too much away from my family." Everyone "saves face" since it would be Coach Whiz's decision, and the Maloofs can grab the well known, high profile guy that they want.

Wait, I'm confused. I just got on a computer for the first time this morning. So is this Whisenut guy really gonna be our coach or is this all speculation. It sounds as if it already happened though. All I know is there's no way in hell Bibby and Artest will listen to a WNBA coach. Bonzi will probably cuss him out.

It hasn't been publicly anounced but VF21 and her sources have got a really good track record with this sort of thing.

Speak for yourself. I've already got my effigy half built, just need to go to the store to pick up some lighter fluid and charcoal.

I will once the anger from the Maloofs hiring him wears off.

I had said I will give the guy a chance once my anger for the move wears off.

Just kind of upset over how these kind of things happen, and a guy that shouldn't have the job gets the job.

BUT Once he starts coaching I would give him a chance, as I would anyone else they hire.

I appreciate having the time to try and digest this prior to the official announcement. I have decided I will jump on the Whiz bandwagon. I need the practice defending him to my none kings friends and laker fan. :o

I don't like the Maloofs because they made all their money here in New Mexico and then abandoned the state to go to Las Vegas. Their dad was a big supporter of the University of New Mexico and of the state. When their dad died, the Maloof boys took off and left NM, still siphoning their money from their dad's liquor distributorships. Don't be surprised if the Kings end up in Las Vegas in the next few years.

That said, I like John Whisenant. Does he have NBA coaching or playing experience? No. But neither did Flip Saunders. Whis is a great guy and an excellent basketball mind. I'm not saying he will be the Kings' savior, but he deserves a chance and the support of the fans.

How often do fans agree with drafts choices and coaching hires? Not often. There is always someone they think was a better selection. But many of those work out very well. Give Whis a chance. He will put his heart and soul into the team. Don't blame him for a choice made by the Maloofs you don't agree with.

The Timeberwolves fluctuated between mediocre and god-awful for Saunders' first four years in Minnesota; the team we currently have set up doesn't have a window that big.

I'll keep it real: the last Kings draft pick that I was happy with on draft day was Bobby Hurley.

it will take a minimum of two years for whisenant to adjust to the nba style, level of play, and the players he will be working with. any other guy with significant nba experience, and it would take a half a season...one whole season at best if he's a slow learner. but hiring an outsider to the nba will increase the likelihood of failure, and that's something you can take to the bank. the kings window of opportunity and margin for error is not very big, and hiring whis decreases that window by a good amount in order to accomodate the hefty transition period that will accompany his hiring.

now, as for "blaming him," nobody's doing that. most of us are blaming the maloofs for being retards, and choosing to hire the family friend as opposed to any of the more qualified candidates. they are not using that mental process called foresight, which is incredibly necessary in the business world. they aren't thinking about the repercussions of handing the head coaching position of the sacramento kings to a guy who is extremely unqualified. they are not thinking about all of the factors and forces that will be working against them if the whisenant experiment fails, and it certainly could. arena deal? forget it. re-signing ron artest? yeah right. how about first looking at the offseason problems that could occur. re-signing bonzi wells? how committed is he to a team that makes a joke of the head coach position? is he going to want to have to listen to a 60-year old rookie telling him how to play the nba game? how about the development of kevin martin and francisco garcia, as well as whomever the kings draft? how is whis going to further prepare them for the nba, when he has no experience in the league itself? just a few questions that i, as a fan, would like answers to...and still, nobody has been able to provide reasonable arguments that support the hiring of whisenant...

My guess is the Maloofs will provide "surface" answers to your questions, Padrino. They'll say he knows the game of basketball, that they have every confidence the Kings players - some of the very best in the league, blah, blah, blah - will step up and work with the coach. They'll say something about taking chances being the only way to win. They'll remind the fans somehow about Ron Artest. And at the end, they'll remind all of us that we're "the best fans in the league" and they know we'll give Whis a chance and support him 100%...

They might even have a Kings player or three around to talk about how well Whis has done with the Monarchs, how well he coaches defense, etc.

And somehow, we'll all be vaguely reminded of something but we won't know exactly what it is until later... maybe days later ... when it comes to us.

Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow standing in front of the "GREAT AND TERRIBLE OZ" when, suddenly, Toto pulls back a curtain and a meek, nerdy-looking little man in front of a whole bunch of levers looks at them with fright...

"Pay NO ATTENTION to the man behind the curtain!" roared the great and terrible Oz...

...

...

fade to black.

great...i can't wait for all of the excitingly vague responses to not just my questions...but everybody's questions. and i am certain there are people out there with these same questions who are in an actual position to call out the maloofs publicly. more than that, i can't wait for the maloof's to respond to the very same questions when the kings miss the playoffs this coming season...and the season after that... *cue dramatic, foreboding music*

btw, nice wizard of oz analogy. :D

Thanks. It inspired me to create Part 4 of "A Cautionary Tale"...

But I think Flip was GM for a couple of years before becoming the coach. So their situation is totally different.

As VF and so many other fans on this board had mentioned several times on this thread, nobody is not giving Whiz a chance. We may disagree on the decision to hire him, but once he sits on that bench he will be given a clean slate just like any other kings' players/coaches.

^^^^ Wow Elie seems really enthused about being the prospective coach of the Kings. I really do hope the Maloofs get their collective heads out of their @sses and make the RIGHT choice.

"It's a hell of an opportunity. I would inherit very good team, a playoff team, with owners passionate about wining. That's what it's all about. I would relish this opportunity. I'm passionate about the game. I live, eat, sleep it. I love working out with guys. I love all of it. And I'm real excited about this."

And that my friends, is something Coach W doesn't have...

yeah, after i read that article i was all "DAMN, now thats exactly what i wanna hear from a coach!" it sounds like he has as much passion and enthusiasm as some of the players, which is perfect!
