In a move reminiscent of one of his political heroes, Mayor Kevin Johnson announced Thursday that he was forming a task force in charge of getting a new sports and entertainment arena built in Sacramento.

I for one welcome this. It's not competing with the proposal for Cal Expo, it just keeps us from putting all our eggs in one basket. The more people actively involved in trying to come up with creative ideas, the better.

You beat me to it Kennadog. I like this idea. FWIW, the Sprint Center in Kansas City was primarily funded by tourist taxes. Hotel and Rental Car taxes i believe. I can't believe that a place like Kansas City attracts that many more tourists than Sactown.

Are tourist taxes at all feasible? I'm guessing that they aren't or else it would've been brought up before but if it hasn't, I have to think that should be thrown in the mix of ideas as well.

The part I loved the most was his reference to Joe Serna, arguably the last mayor of Sacramento who really cared about the city and its people and not just the politics. This is very encouraging news...
