Sacramento Kings begin search for GM (merged)

All good names.

Not as good as this one though:

From Sam Amick:

Petrie, whose contract expires at the end of June, was informed during a Thursday meeting with Ranadive that the new owner would be bringing in his own people once he assumed control of the team. While Petrie will assist during the transition, his league-long tenure that began in 1994 and included eight straight playoff berths and a Western Conference Finals appearance in 2002 will come to an end as expected. The Kings have missed the playoffs for seven consecutive seasons. Ranadive is not expected to retain Kings coach Keith Smart, either, but clearly wants to have his new front-office in place before beginning that process.

Buford/Malone would get me excited. I'd love, absolutely love to bring in Buford as our GM.

I'd prefer one of JVG/Sloan/McMillan as our next coach but if we can't get one of them and do take a risk, Malone would be the correct type to take a risk on, and pairing him with a very experienced GM could be a very good combination potentially.

Thank you Geoff, for 98-03.

Thanks for drafting Reke/Cuz.

But, you should have stepped aside years ago. Go enjoy retirement.

Chris Wallace? Is he the guy that gave Rudy Gay the max? I don't want that guy. The Spurs guy though is very interesting!

if Buford is an option at all that guy is precisely who the Kings should get. for the last 15 or so years, the only real mistake the Spurs as an organisation have made is extending Richard Jefferson. that's it. and they traded him right fast, when they realised what a mistake that was. outside of that, they've been consistently brilliant with everything they've done. Pop probably gets credit for that as well, but still. can't think of anyone I'd rather have as the Kings' gm.

Yeah, Wallace is the name on that list that really concerns me. I understand the idea, though. GMs who lead smaller market teams to wins. How many of those guys would actually be available is a real question.

Vivek will simply explain how this franchise will be the leading global franchise for the next 30 years with the NBA rech revolution etc. My gut tells me Vivek will get anybody he wants.

After doing significant research on the big V over the last few days, I think he's going tp be richer than Bill Gates in 15-20 years, if not sooner. His company is about to explode. I encourage everyone to educate themselves on his tech ideas and how truly 21st century they are. His cocept of the software bus/information bus, and his assiciated technology run all of wall st., all the airlines, homeland security, phone companies (here and asia)... there's not an industry they don't touch. He is way ahead of his competition in the entire way that all businesses will be run. His money is one thing, his growing global influence is quite another.

Eeeeek. Chris Wallace scares me. He's JUST good enough to get the job and JUST bad enough to completely ruin this team.

The other names, (and I'm pretending the Kahn thing is just a joke) are all great. Good to hear.

Not sold on Chris Wallace. People have given him credit now for the Gasol Swap, since it was widely panned at the time, but I am not convinced that even he thought Marc Gasol would end up being as good as he is. In fact, he turned around the next year and drafted Hasheem Thabeet, who was far from a sure thing, over James Harden.

He also traded Kevin Love for OJ Mayo.

I'm guessing we'll end up with a Golden State duo. I would love the Malone hire. Schlenk I have no idea about.

How exactly is Buford an option again?

Buford isn't a GM in the traditional hierarchy with the Spurs. Pop is the President and coach. Buford was a guy Pop brought along and brought up. While Pop relinquished the GM title, he is still supposedly heavily involved in personnel decisions as both a president and coach. The only rationale I can come up with is that Buford would like to spread his wings a little more and have more responsibility. Or he feels that he would like a new challenge.

Just because a guy isn't actively trying to leave a place doesn't mean he won't listen or think about an alternative opportunity. Did anyone think Hollinger was an option before he was hired? No. Everyone's an option.

Buford actually scares me a little.

He'd probably dump Cousins for not being a character guy and keep Smart for being a Pop disciple. :p

I don't think Buford will leave the Spurs so that is as realistic as bringing Phil Jackson in as the coach of the Sacramento Kings!

Wallace is probably overrated. I think Schlenk will probably be the one we end up with.

I do like the fact that Vivek is sounding out Jerry West about this. That can only be a good thing!

We'll see on these Golden State underlings. Sounds awfully convenient to me. Oh, Golden State part owner so OBVIOUSLY he will want to hire the apprentices from his team. Not even his team actually. He didn't hire those guys, at best was an advisor. So...maybe, maybe not. Its the cheap and easy rumor to spread around. Don't have to know anything, just throw out those names and of course everybody will believe you even if they have no track records.

You are probably right but both of the guys (Schlenk and Malone) have a reputation within the industry so it's not that far fetched to see it happen. Schlenk for example has come up through the ranks and has worked with people like Pat Riley and Chuck Daly and is known to be heavy on analytics which is what Vivek is big on. I also read somewhere that he is the key guy in scouting for GSW.

Malone is also a highly respected assistant coach who is seen as a head coach in the NBA one day. It's natural that those dots get joined and assumptions get made.

For example, if Schlenk is appointed as our GM, it's highly likely he will look on Malone kindly as a future coach and would come under strong consideration.

Personally, I would like to see us go after tried and proven people for both positions but Vivek strikes me as the sort of guy that likes to back people in if he believes in them. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. I assume that a lot of these guys are under contract with their current teams and we will be seeking permission from those teams to speak to them. I think we will see more and more information leak through once the transfer of ownership is official.

By all accounts, Vivek has a pretty good track record "hiring people". So I'm gonna give him every benefit of the doubt, since you know, he stepped up and saved the franchise and everything. If he thinks there are some gems in the Warriors org, I'm good with that. If he can dig deep and woo the Spurs GM, I'm good with that.
