Trade Exception
Monta Ellis

I've been thinking a lot about what the Warriors are going to do with that $10 million trade exception from the Richardson deal. First I'd imagine they're going to go after Garnett. They wouldn't be able to combine the exception with other players to match salaries, but they could use it to take back, say, Marko Jaric, which would make their trade package more appealing. But what would their package be? It would probably start with Foyle and Harrington's big contracts, which I don't think would be particularly appealing to Minnesota even if Jaric's deal was erased. I can't see this one happening.

Secondly they might use it to help get Denver or Phoenix under the tax threshold for a price. Maybe they could use it on Camby, for instance. But as much as those owners probably want to get under the tax level, unless GS is willing to include Wright or Biedrins I can't see a deal happening because it would be a straight talent bleed, and neither Denver or Phoenix really needs GS's secondary trade assets (Monta Ellis, O'Bryant, etc)

The fallback plan would probably be to use the $10 million in a S&T. However, one of their big possible targets, Darko, is no longer viable because the Magic are probably going to have to renounce his Bird rights and a S&T for more than the MLE will be very difficult -- basically GS would have to use the exception to clear some of Orlando's contracts to get them under the cap so they could do a S&T for Darko, and it's hard to see how GS could both take on Orlando's contracts and give them enough incentive to do this.

If I were Mullin, I would go after Gerald Wallace with the S&T. However, this presents its own complications, because if Charlotte wants Wallace they coudl play hardball and not cooperate in a S&T to try and force Wallace's hand. But this is what I would do.

If all of this fails, the last option is going to be trading for a player who makes under $10 million. And if that's the case, I think Artest would be high on their list. Yes, they would be reuniting Artest and Jackson, but it doesn't seem like they're worried about combustible personalities. Artest fits in perfectly with their lineup. He's tough, versatile (probably a four in Don Nelson's lineup), not shy about shooting, and would give them more of a defensive look. Would YOU want to face Baron/Jackson/Artest/Harrington/Biedrins? They would be one of the most fearsome teams in the league.

For the Kings, we'd clear Artest's contract now, which would get us under the cap to make a possible run at Darko. There wouldn't be that much room under the cap, so we're talking about a $6-7 million starting deal, which might be just enough incentive to get him since most everyone else only has teh MLE. And meanwhile, Ellis could be the point guard of the future.

Then Petrie could focus on getting Bibby traded to the Heat for expirings, extending Martin and Ellis, and we'd have the backcourt set for the future.

Hrm. Maybe because Ellis is cheap.. But we would have an *** load of players at his position.

Ellis is not a point guard. The Warriors consistently fell apart with him running the point. He's young and very good, but we don't need another SG trapped in a PG's body.

Besides, the Warriors would scoff at that offer.

I don't think they'd trade Ellis straight up for Artest, never mind including the trade exception

With the direction they seem to be going in (youth) I can't see it.

1) Ellis has point guard skills and he's only 21. He's never going to be a Nash type, but he'd be a great scoring point.

2) How is GS going in a youthful direction? Sure they just traded Richardson for Wright, but they still have Baron, Jackson, Harrington... they're not old, but they're also not young.

The future would look like:

PG: Ellis/Price/Douby
SG: Martin/Douby
SF: Salmons/Garcia
PF: Darko/Williams
C: Hawes/Williams

Obviously that's not going to set the league on fire, but it's a pretty good start.

Don't get me wrong, I'd definetly do the trade, but I don't know if they'd want someone like Artest in the lockerroom. And it's clear that they're trying to be competitive in the future as well as now, trading there best scorer for a rookie. They have some nice young pieces like Biedrins, Ellis and Wright.
They will be there core for the future.

Of course, I'd be all for it. And GS would be encouraged (?) by Ron-Ron's cheerleading during the Dallas series. Of course, Ellis is probably too steep. Would you do it with O'Bryant instead? I probably would.

Why do you keep putting SALMONS over GARCIA at SF!!!??? :D

Sheesh.. When/How can I convince you Garcia is better?? :D

GSW would NEVER!! do this trade....not to mention us being in the same division!!...they would be practically giving us a chanve at making the finals in about 2 yrs

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree there is no way they trade Ellis for Artest (regardless of the division.) If they move Ellis, it would be in a Garnett deal, but I can't see much else. He is their future, along with Bedrins.

Aside from the fact that GS would be trading a bencher for a starter, and a really good one at that, I don't really know how much Golden State really considers Ellis in their future. They're going to have to extend him after this season, and how much are they really going to want to pay for someone who is going to back up Baron and Jackson? Just about every trade scenario recently invovled Monta Ellis. I don't think he's paticularly untouchable.

I don't think he's "untouchable", but certainly not for a headache like artest. That said, if they can turn him and other pieces into an all-star level PF or C right now, they do it. Further, I can't imagine Jackson being in their long term plans. You've seen the good and bad of him in the playoffs, no way they bank on him as a building block.

I think calling Ellis a bench player a bit disengenuous. He played near starters minutes IIRC. I don't think GS is down with Artest, I don't think he's a nellie type player. Also Ellis is not a PG, yea he can drive and dish but he's not a main ball handler decision maker. He's a scorer and he won't fit with Martin IMO, so unless we can swing him to a third team I'm not interested.
