SacBee: Marty Mac's World: Hawes isn't scoring points with Kings

It's a good thing Kings center Spencer Hawes not only decided to take the team's conditioning test but passed.

Aside from overblowing of the Hawes issue, Marty's writing style continues to devolve further below the level of an amateur blogger. It's an embarrassment for the Bee that this guy's a paid staff writer.

I am glad I am not the only person who feels this way. His writing may not be a news article, but isn't the Sacramento Bee a professional newspaper? The words "yo" and "homeboy" should have never been used.

NME - I'm glad you said something. I think it's pretty bad when a relative newcomer to sports - Melody Gutierrez - covers our Kings MUCH better than the old beat writer. Marty seems to be just sitting down and hitting keys to get his columns in on time. The real passion for the game - or make that games - isn't there. And it's almost as though he's reading the Internet to figure out what to write about in his columns.

I don't know, the conditioning thing may be blown of proportion, but just about everything I've seen/heard out of Hawes, whether it's the way he expresses his political views or the way he approaches basketball has suggested a 20 year old who thinks he knows everything. There are a lot of 20 year olds out there who think they know everything (I used to be one), but I think Marty Mac puts his finger on that attitude in this article. Thinking you know everything isn't exactly conducive to improving.

And yet, oddly enough, the only person who seems to think Hawes has an attitude problem is Marty. Ailene doesn't think so, Scott doesn't think so, Sam doesn't think so and Melody doesn't think so...and those four actually cover the Kings more closely than Mr. "I'll sit here and pretend to be hip" McNeal. Marty wants his column to be controversial and cutting edge, but he has no idea how to do it so he grasps at straws that are more like wisps of smoke.

I'd like a little more substantive proof before I jumped to a conclusion about Spencer Hawes, especially since I've heard nothing to indicate any kind of attitude problem.

I would largely agree with this, knowing a little something about the syndrome myself. ;)

The whole humble/coachable/team player thing with Hawes is very much up in question, but I still think this article trying to perpetuate an issue as minor as some paint by numbers conditioning test is pretty amateurish.

Marty is clearly not a big fan of Hawes. I don't blame him. He probably wants the best for the Kings. This early in the process of rebuilding, the best for the Kings is not to take chances on damaged players with physical limitations and attitudinal problems.

If Hawes is really up for a contract extension, I think Marty's issues are valid.

We don't want a " future center " who's talent is limited to taking cute jump shots. We want a " future center " who can defend, play the post, get rebounds, block shots, and run up and down the floor - without reservations or fear of being reinjured.

Are we building a solid Championship team, or just a mediocre team?

(This post has been edited to correct a spelling error - "Hawse" to "Hawes" )

At some point, can you at least spell "Hawes" correctly? I thought maybe it was a typo at first, but I guess not.....

Hawes is signed thru the next three years. After this year, he becomes eligible for a contract extension for the next two years. This is a team option and not a obligation. In his last year the team must make a qualifing offer to make him a restricted free agent, and then has the right to match any offer for him. So, the team has this year and the following two years to judge whether they desire his services in the future.

Its a little early to say the Hawes has physical limitations and attitude problems. The kid has hardly played yet, with emphasis on the word kid. Lighten up a little bit and wait and see. The word is patience. In the NBA world it takes up to three years to see what you have with a big man, so were just scratching the surface here.

As for Marty. In general I have always liked him. Of course, having replaced Gasprich, (probably misspelled) anyone would have looked good. For sure, Marty won't win any prizes for his writing skills, and this article did have the look of fill to it, especially when he was a little late to the table. Marty seems to be searching for his place in the world of media, and, so far, has not found it.

You're referring to R.E. Graswich, who is now broadcasting his bias and inane commentary every afternoon on KFBK, along with Kitty O'Neal.

Note to Prince XY: Marty McNeal doesn't give a rat's patoot about the Kings. He only cares about putting forth his own agenda. If I remember correctly (and I know I do), his last year as beat writer for the Kings was fraught with a lot of issues and his entire outlook on the team changed. He still seems to be harboring some resentment as he tries, as Bajaden pointed out, to find his niche. He has no passion for his work or any of the teams he covers. If you read his stuff regularly, and I have for years, it's clear he's just not that invested. This would be fine if he were just reporting the sports news but he's not. He's supposed to have a cutting edge column about HIS VIEW of local and national sports (hence the name "Marty Mac's World") and yet his "world" is devoid of anything even remotely resembling passion.

two words.

tyson chandler

the bulls gave up on him after 5 years then he became a force.

granted his skill set is different than hawes but it goes to show that it can take a long time for a young center to pay off.

oh it took kaman 4 years and he play 4 years in college.

I've been less than enthusiastic about either Marty or Spenser for a while now, and this article did nothing to change my views.
