S Van Gundy New coach of Magic

I do have to wonder if one of the reasons Porter was held out of the interviews up until this point was to avoid the blatant second choice appearance if Van Gundy didn't come here. Now if he comes in for an interview, yeah, we wanted Van Gundy but hey, we never had a chance to interview Porter. Now he looks like a guy riding in to the rescue.

Yeah if the fallout from this is that Rambis is pantybunched over being the second guy, that's ok. We'll take Porter.

Not like we are in a hurry or anything now... don't have anyplace to be till what, June 28?

Perhaps they did not find it quite the Garden of Eden after all, eh? :p

I suspect it was due dilligence. SVG apparently wanted to make the call by wednesday, and I think this likely means that we were his second choice -- that if the Magic got their act together in time, he would coach them. Alternately I guess it really could mean that he, or his wife, just did not feel comfortable with the city or change after they got to Sacto.

Either way...it did not take a genius to pick SVG out of the crowd this offseason as a priority hire. Do not know why we did not move on him faster. The Pacers made an offer to him weeks ago. If that had been us, we might have gotten him.

Well, Sactown is not a Garden of Eden (close though). However, as ironic as it may be, I have lived in both Orlando and now in Sactown and this place (without Mickey Mouse and all) kicks Orlando's a**.

Seriously - Sactown Rocks!

Furthemore, although I have not been hell bent on getting Gundy here (as I found him to be a decent, not great coach), I look forward to the Kings meeting-up with him next year so that we can stick it down his effing throat.

No hard feelings though.

I think I know what you mean... I am WAY more disappointed than I have a right to be - I was never big time in SVG's corner for the job. But, I got sucked in and pretty enthusiastic at the prospect of snagging the best free agent coach out there... like it was going to be a nice tangible step in the right direction. Can hardly say that about any of the other guys. So I'm fairly bitterly disappointed.

Rather he came here or not wasn't gonna make a damn difference.

we're gonna be mediocre with our without SVG for a while.

^^^Do we need to start a new section in the "nonsports" department for "internet porn addicts?"

Are those guys still even in the business (North and Jeremy)? I remember them from back before there WAS an internet. I didn't know they were really still doing it. Just kind of like, you know, Hall of Famers.

Such is the life of a Kings fan. Should have known.

I just hope Porter's on the list now. I'm not really much inspired by Rambis.

How about a name change to the Sacramento Doormats? That would pretty fitting. I'm tired of this crap, this org. deserves better than this.

When was the last time this FO has done anything aggressively?

Plus why would SVG take a chance at a team who was gonna have no hope next year? atleast the Magic can make the playoffs in the horrible east.

Bibby and Ron are goners anyways not to mention we have no idea whats gonna happen with the arena.

Can anyone tell me why people are so upset about this?

The arena saga is still not solved

Bibby and Ron are most likely to be booted this summer via trade!

Kings have no chance to be competitive next year with Bibby and Ron gone

Magic have a better chance to be better next year with the weak east.

The Kings have fallen for a long time no one appreciates us live with it..

A few hours ago I saw an Orlando poster suggesting they change their name to Orlando Mud. If SVG goes to Orlando, I guess the "Mud" name will still be up for grabs.

I suppose some Magic fans are "dipping" into KingsFans.com to get some of the latest info too on SVG. If they saw all the post here about porn stars Ron Jeremy, Peter North, etc. I wonder what impression they would have of some Sac Kings fans?

Yeah everybody seems to walk on us and treat us like dirt. Even coaches now.

now this is just silly. when the choice is orlando or sacramento this offseason, 2007, you pick orlando every time as a coach, unless the money is just too obscenely good in sacramento to turn down. the magic have a bright future with one of the league's best young big man studs in dwight howard. they've got youth and cap space up the ***. there's a ton of potential to work with in orlando if you're an nba head coach. what's in sacramento? a ****load of uncertainty, maybe? artest gone? bibby gone? both gone? neither gone? and what about miller? he can't possibly fit into any kind of rebuild for the future. sure, we've got kevin martin and a decent draft pick, but talk about some really tiny diamonds in the rough when compared to orlando's brimming and optimistic outlook on next season. van gundy made the right choice, as a coach.

Stan Van Gundy is the man for Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic have signed Stan Van Gundy to coach the team after reaching a compensation agreement with his former team, the Miami Heat, early today, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

The Magic are expected to introduce Van Gundy on Thursday at a news conference.

Van Gundy replaces Billy Donovan, who officially was released by the Magic from a contract he signed with the team last Friday.

Van Gundy was the Magic's runner-up choice to Donovan before Donovan pulled out of his five-year, $27.5 million deal with the Magic last weekend.

Van Gundy and his wife, Kim, flew to Sacramento on Wednesday to visit with the Kings and look at the city while he considered an offer from the Kings.

Meanwhile, back in Orlando, the Magic furiously were trying to free Van Gundy from the last year of his contract as a consultant with the Miami Heat.

It was not known what kind of compensation package .the Magic paid to the Heat, but it was believed to be in the form of a draft pick or picks.

The Heat had not planned to ask the Kings for compensation if they had signed Van Gundy.

Heat Coach and President Pat Riley wanted the Magic to compensate the club because Van Gundy would be coaching the Magic in the same division as the Heat, the Southeast.

Van Gundy coached the Heat for a little more than two seasons, taking over for Riley but was replaced by Riley in December 2005. Van Gundy said he left the Heat to spend more time with his family.

His contract with the Heat as a consultant was to expire in June.

Van Gundy becomes the ninth coach in Magic history.

Donovan was lured away from the University of Florida to replace Brian Hill, whom the Magic had fired after a 40-42 season. But the end to one of the strangest, most tumultuous and certainly the briefest coaching eras came to an end less than 24 hours after it began when Donovan had a change of heart and asked the Magic to be released from his contract.

I wanted Terry Porter anyway :D

Wonder if he's even going to get a look. His teams' complete lack of defensive ability in his years might make it a diffcult sell for the Maloofs.

At this point I will satisified if we just cash out with Rambis and go home crossing our fingers. We lsot the SVG race, are looking about as floundering as the Sonics right now, and I just want us to give the job to soembody we like and get a move on with the offseason. We all got to see just how significant a good interview is last year with Muss. Means little. So let's grab an assistant, preferably one who has been a player, and been on championship type teams so he can talk with experience, and move forward. I'm not sure how you can really reasonably draw lines between a Rambis, a Shaw or a whoever. Just take your best guess at somebody you like and go. The guys with experience at this point Cartwright, to a lesser degree Porter, Carlesimo, pretty much just have experience losing. So...let's just go on now.

One more time for the oldtimers...No Rambis, No Rings! :p

I had SVG, Porter and then Scotty Brooks as my top three 24 hrs ago, but now I'm looking at it this way. Why not go with Brooks with all the other issues involving the franchise in such flux? He probably would not do any better or worse than any of the leftover scraps on the table. I don't want to put him down in anyway because he deserves as much a shot as anyone at this stage IMO. In fact, I would hire him by the end of this week just to show that we can get on with the program around here. Oh, and don't forget Brooks was on an NBA championship team with the Rockets.

Considering that Rambis was previously a coaching candidate with Petrie, I think its just about a certainty that he will be our next coach! Hopefully he work out but man, the firing of Rick Adelman keeps haunting us to this very day

Maybe this puts Reggie Theus back in the dazzling picture if the Maloofs are back in the picture too - perhaps at the expense of Geoff Petrie.

My problems with Brooks would be that a) he was here last year during a miserable campaign. That smears him a bit in my book. Yes I know he amazingly won 2 games when Muss was out. However I think those are the only two wins in his career, and they were at home, against the worst teams in the league. Completely discount that.

So then you come to experience, and Brooks just does not measure up. I think last year was his first and only year as a #1 assistant, and as mentioned it went disastrously. He hasn't mentored under Pat Riley or Phil Jackson, he's mentored under Muss. Was part of his program. Presumably believed in it. Of all the Kings eras and assistants, why would we possibly turn to somebody from the worst times we've seen since Clinton was president? You don't WANT familiarity with last year. You want a completely clean fresh start with the Muss era shoved into a file cabinet somewhere never to see the light of day again.

All of the above doesn't mean he will be a bad coach -- if he can reach players he can be ok. But it does mean that the outside hire of the uiniversally esteemed Shaw, or of a guy who's actually already had a head coaching spot, should be higher percentage. Hiring Brooks feels like all those old hires the Kings used to do because so and so knew so and so and so and so had this friend. Its just stunningly unambitious. Again, on these sorts of things with so many teams looking, if you end up hiring somebody that nobody else even thought of interviewing...you may want to reexamine that decision and why you are making it.

Yup, we had OUR coach and we just tossed him to the curb like he was worthless. Rick Adelman is my favorite coach of all time and the rockets are now my 2nd favorite team because of him (I was already a big Yao fan though). We gave away the guy that harnessed the greatest run in franchise history.
