Roster size for new cba, therefore who is in?

The new CBA has a wrinkle in the roster size requirement. For now teams must carry 13 contracts minimumon their active roster and 15 max. But after Feb 6 they can only carry 13 maximum on the roster but only 12 can be active. So for now minimum of 13 contracts as of 25 December.

Soooo, who compose the Kings roster now? Not counting Adrian Oliver and Lawrence Hill, rookies from San Jose State and Stanford respectively, the Kings have 14 contracts:

Cousins
Evans
Fredette
Garcia
Greene
Hayes
Hickson
Honeycutt
Outlaw
Salmons
Thomas
Thompson
Thornton
Whiteside

So for now they are ok. But they are still $1M below the minimum salary required. So as "Circa_1985_Fan" says over on the Personnel moves forum, "I do believe something's up...." I now agree but who would be the 13? Who is odd man out? Maybe Honeycutt to D-League? Or a 2-for-1 trade? Let the fun begin.

Whiteside or Honeycutt to D-league. We won't hear any trade rumorings going on until we get to the trade deadline.

13 max after Feb. 6th? Where did you hear that? That could effectively eliminate up to 60 jobs! Are you sure about this? That could also leave teams incredibly short handed in case of injury

The D-league thing would have to be a necessity and it would only relate to players with the team because I can't see teams having to trim their rosters to 13 and cut guaranteed money in the process.

How can you have a minimum AND a maximum of 13? Doesn't make sense, basically no teams could make 2 for 1 deals because they'd have a mandated 13 that they couldn't go beyond! hahaha.

Agreed with STK, that makes no sense. I haven't heard that one, and I can't imagine the players would have let it slip through. What's the source on this?

Here it is word-for-word reported in Salt Lake Tribune on Wednesday:

RULE CHANGE: The new CBA states teams can carry between 13-15 players on their active roster. But the new collective bargaining agreement comes with a wrinkle. Thirteen players (previously 12) can dress and play through Feb. 6. From then on, the NBA introduces a weird change as teams will still be allowed to dress 13 guys but only 12 can play. *I too say "WTF?"

However, that quote given from the Salt Lake Tribune doesn't mention the total number of players on the roster after Feb. 6, only the number that can be dressed. You implied that after Feb. 6, the team could only have 13 players maximum on it's roster. Big difference.

Chuck Hayes resigning for 1 million more than his last contract. So doesn't that bridge that gap to the minimum?

He signed for 1 mil more over the length of the contract, which would equate to being around $250K more added this year if we were to consider that his contract is evenly spread.

Ok, so we're going to have to rely on the SL Tribune to have been accurate there. This is the first time I've heard this reported. But as it stands, this appears to say the following:

Teams may have 13-15 on their roster, just like before. For the first half of the season, rather than a 12-man active roster (as for the past CBA), teams will have a 13-man active roster. For the second half of the season, teams will be allowed to "dress" 13 players, but only 12 can play. So in the second half of the season, when a team has 15 players on its roster
two must be inactive (in street clothes or not present, in the D-League, etc.), 13 can dress, but of those 13 only 12 can play.

Right now we have 14 players, counting Hayes. So let's assume that we have sent Honeycutt to Reno and we dress 13, with the bottom of the depth chart being Whiteside/Thomas. Under the previous CBA, we would have to decide before game time whether Whiteside or Thomas was eligible. Under the new rules, it appears we can wait until we actually insert the 12th player in the game to make that decision. So if JT gets hurt in-game, most likely Whiteside gets the call, while if Garcia gets hurt in-game, most likely Thomas gets the call, if we have to go down to that 12th player. That's how I make sense of that wording. I'm pretty sure that roster size remains at 15.

So it means you can have 13 active guys, but once the 12the different guy comes in, the 13th becomes inactive.
It's a small thing but like it, gives a bit of gameday flexibility for overtimes, injuries, and foul trouble.

Keep White side on the active roster! Just treat him like the old Ben Wallace and never give him the ball. He understands blocking shots.

Although I can't quite figure out what this means nor do I understand the intent, doesn't this leave us in more jeopardy of not making the minimum salary at the end of the seaon when it really counts? My head is spinnig on something that seems overly complicated for no earthly reason.

I think CruzDude simply misread an article and came to the wrong conclusion. The Capt. has a good explanation on post #9 above.

Rather I mis-interpreted the article. The Capt. seems to have a good explanation but would be nice to get ultimate clarification. Until then this new "wrinkle" seems to require a minimum of 13 contracts (up to 15). I found a summary of the new CBA that I put in a new thread. Oddly it does not yet mention this aspect but am sure there are others "B-level" things not in the summary as well.

That is the same as before. The roster must have 13-15 players. The only difference is the amount of active players on game day. They increased it to 13 for the first half due to the short training camp. I like the 13 dressed rule. It allows a team to play a young guy in the event of a blowout.

Before voiding Hayes' deal we bid on Outlaw whick took us over the minimum by some $1.5 - 2 million! We were about million under before we bid on Outlaw! This season its 80% of the cap and we are alredy over that by some $2 million

Yeah, that just basically said until Feb. teams can have 13 players active, which is probably a result of this shortened season. Never understood the 12 active thing anyway.

It didn't say anything about limiting overall size in that quote. Although, 13 can dress and only 12 can play? I guess so players can save money on suits? ha!

Jimmer/Hickson/Outlaw/JT/Garcia/Thomas is a pretty solid bench. Something tells me Honeycutt/Donte/Whiteside won't be getting many minutes.

Although I would still like a tall pogo stick instead of Hayes, this isn't a bad starting lineup and I hope PW goes a bit Adelman and sticks with it. It has two guys and maybe three who could be all stars at least once in their lives. It has a hopefully more mature and team oriented Salmons and it has Hayes whose skills and on court leadership I think will soon become apparent even to the thickest of us all.

Predictability has its good points and I would suspect it is especially true in bsketball as opposed to cricket, for example. (inject giggle) Only our coach can screw this up. I see a potential for a very good team as we even have good athletes coming off the bench. Now let's remove confusion from the list of things that seem to come from a PW coached team.

What brings excitement to me is not Evans or Cousins but Thornton, Hickson, and Jimmer. These guys are as important to winning and losing as the annointed Evans and Cousins and will make the basketball lives of these latter two easier. Evans will have options like he has never had before in his life and Cousins will have a fatherly Hayes in his ear to help him play better defense - such is my guess.

Anyway, Happy/Merry (insert whatever suits you) and let's play ball.
