NEW YORK -- Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant, the reigning T-Mobile Rookie of the Year, and Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, lead a list of 18 players selected for the 2009 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam to be held on Friday, Feb. 13 in Phoenix during NBA All-Star 2009.

The participants in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam were selected by the NBA's assistant coaches, with each team submitting one ballot. For the first time in the game's history, two current NBA players, All-Star starters Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat -- veterans of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge and part of T-Mobile's "All-Star Faves" -- will serve on the coaching staffs, Howard for the Sophomores and Wade for the Rookies. The head coaches for the Rookie and Sophomore teams will be the lead assistants from the 2009 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs.

Forward Jeff Green, Durant's teammate in Oklahoma City, joins him on the Sophomore team, which also includes Atlanta Hawks forward/center Al Horford, Los Angeles Clippers forward Al Thornton, Philadelphia 76ers forward Thaddeus Young, New York Knicks forward Wilson Chandler, Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey and a pair of teammates from the Houston Rockets -- guard Aaron Brooks and forward Luis Scola.

Joining Rose on the Rookie team are two sets of teammates -- guard O.J. Mayo and center Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies and center Greg Oden and guard Rudy Fernandez from the Portland Trail Blazers. Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, Clippers guard Eric Gordon, Heat forward Michael Beasley and New Jersey Nets center Brook Lopez round out the Rookie team.

The T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam will be televised live nationally on TNT at 9 p.m. ET and also will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio, while NBA.com will make live audio available to fans in multiple languages. Fans tuning in to TNT will also get a special treat, as current NBA All-Star LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, a participant in the 2004 and 2005 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge, will join Kevin Harlan, Kenny Smith and Craig Sager as part of TNT's broadcast as an analyst.

This is what happens when you ACTUALLY PLAY YOUR YOUNG GUYS: they put up numbers, get noticed, and get in these games. But let's keep Hawes on the bench, and limit JT's time.

Sucks that JT isnt in the game

all JT could do now is Play a Hell Of A Game against boston tonight to prove to the NBA that he got snubed,

I hope JT plays at least 40 min tonight in Boston Why, not? He's got young legs and won't be affected by back-to-back like certain other big men on Kings. If he fouls out - so be it. I would love to see him rack up a nice double-double against the world champs. Go JT - show 'em!

Wow. We'd win over 50 games with that Rookie squad.

I can't blame anyone for not putting JT in that. You could make a case against Eric Gordon, but that looks more like a position play with all those big men already on the team.

Boston aren't world champs.

Anyway, it's a real shame none of them made it. I believe both would have if they'd gotten more minutes from our brain dead "coaches".

If You aren't even a starter on a 10-36 team and have limited production - that is what happens.

One thing is certain - the blame is on someone else because both guys aren't any worse than some other that were picked instead. In other words - shoot the coaches.

Its a shame the at least Thompson didn't make it. Sometimes the Kings are their own worst enemy's. They don't play the kids. So the kids don't put any numbers, and don't make the all star game. So the rest of the country only knows one thing about the Kings. They suck! Oh well, I now have no reason to watch.

That's only 9 players on that roster! I can't believe Kevin Love didn't make it either?!
Yeah, I'm surprised that Gasol made it over Love. Fernandez was pretty much necessary to balance the roster. Would have been nice to see Thompson in, though. Next year he should have another shot.

For the soph's I forgot about Scola, although to give a slot on that team to a 28-year-old seems a bit silly. Brooks surprised me a bit but not a lot. Hawes' recent dip in PT pretty much doomed him, but I think he's on par with a lot of these guys value-wise in the long run.

It's good news that both Hawes and Thompson got ignored. Why should they be rewarded for anything when their team win % is 22 percent??

Also for any normal person it will serve as added motivation to go out and work harder and make recognition for yourself.

I don't know how about Hawes, because he seems like a bit of a sulker and crybaby, but I think Thompson will respond positively to being dissed.

Why should Hawes get minutes just because he is young??? People were saying the same thing about Shelden Williams last year. Hawes hasn't proven he deserves minutes lately. He commits stupid fouls, falls for lame fakes, takes weak shots, missed defensive assignments. Let the scrub get his act together before giving him serious PT. After the trade deadline, if Brad Miller gets moved, we will have no choice. But, as the roster stands, he is not deserving of any special treatment.

They didn't do enough because they weren't given those chances. All those other players were either starters, or play heavy minutes in the rotation, something neither Hawes nor JT has been given on a consistent basis.

I understand Hawes being left off because he hasn't been too impressive as of late, but I think it is ridiculous that JT got left off the rookie team. I agree with everyone that made it, but Gasol's and Thompson's stats are almost identical. The only difference is Gasol gets 5 extra minutes playing time. Any takers on Thompson making it on the sophomore team next season over Gasol?

meh, this is not a big deal.. just another chip on JT & Hawes' shoulder to work harder and become better to prove to the league they are better then people think.

So Durant (team at 22%) and Gasol (team at 25%) are in because......

I actually don't think winning really matters that much in the rookie game because most fo the top rookies go to really bad teams. But there were pretty clear reasons why guys got selected -- Gasol's been a starter, Durant is just better.

According to Boston's Website and the NBA theye are World Champions. :D

Well, they're wrong, plain and simple. NBA has no teams outside of the US, so how could they possibly be world champions? Just 'cause I proclaim myself to be the most handsome man on the planet and make a banner, doesn't make it so. :D

Okay, I'm gonna jump in here...

Long before there was an Internet and fans from outside the US were able to talk instantly with fans here, the winner of the NBA title was called the "world champion." It's a hold-over from another time and something that will most likely change with time. Right now, though, it's really not worth derailing threads over.

Just for the record, however, Dime Dropper?

You're wrong. The Toronto Raptors are not inside the US.

:p ;)

You're right that it doesn't really matter, just a thing that niggles me all the same.

And hey, Canada does not count as a country of its own! :p

Can't believe I managed to forget the damn Raptors
