No... they let some clock run out... and then foul. They re forced to make clutch free throws... then we have to imbound and cut a secodn off there... then since the have no time outs.... after we hit freethrows they have to run the court with like 6 seconds left... its enough time to get it off... but its not going to be as good as what htey got...

Its a debatable decisions. I would jsut go with the foul.

It's not debatable with 14 seconds left on the clock. Once the clock started they were committed. They actually did pretty good until at the 6 second mark, when the pass went across court to the unexpectedly open Barry. He got the ball, put up the shot, and the rest is history...

You don't foul when you're on defense and you have the lead... Why? Because you don't give the team that's behind a chance to score without the clock moving, that's why. If the other team is down, and they have the ball, you can't assume that they're *going* to let the clock run out.

How about letting them earn none with some decent defense (or at least take a 2-pt attempt). You have a better chance to have them miss a 2-pt shot (about 50-55% for a 45-50% shooter from the field) than miss both free throws (for an 80% shooter that's 1-.8*.8=.36 or 36%).

Then you get the ball back still up 3 instead of 1-2, as long as everyone sticks to the 3-pt shooters.

That whole "You're up three with seconds to go - why don;t you foul..." schtick is something that makes for good banter for talking heads on BSPN but has anyone ever actually won a game like that? I didn't think so...

Well, it depends on the # of seconds left. If there's only 2 seconds left, you don't give them the chance to shoot a 3 by fouling. If there is time left, you don't want to start a FT shooting contest too early.

Fourteen seconds left! Here's an all-too-probable scenario when fouling:

0:14- ball is inbounded by Spurs

0:13- we foul and put someone on the line

0:13- they make both FTs, pull within 1 point. We inbound.

0:11- They foul us. We hit 2 FTs and reestablish a 3pt lead.

0:10- We foul them again. They hit 2 FTs, pull within 1 again.

0:08- They foul us. We hit 1 of 2.

0:08- They have the ball down by 2. We've only run 6 seconds off the clock and now we still have to play honest defense, except a two sends us to OT and a 3 beats us. Notice we actually hit a decent 3 out of 4 FTs here. But they probably make 4 of 4 with Barry, Ginobili, & Parker shooting well. Heck, even Duncan was nailing them from the line. And of course, if we shoot worse than 3 of 4 we leave ourselves wide open to actually lose in regulation. No thanks.

But hey, that's in the distant past now, we got a game tonight.

the answer to that question is becuase he's too bad defensively to guard manu or tony. so barry is the obvious nod
