Former Pistons second-round draft pick Rickey Paulding -- a onetime Detroit Renaissance High standout -- will head west next month to try and make the Sacramento Kings' roster, his agent said.

"Sacramento has some room on its roster for a player who does well in vet camp," Doug Neustadt said Tuesday.

Asked if he was disappointed he wouldn't be playing with the hometown Pistons, Paulding said: "It's definitely something I wanted to do. Whatever reason, it didn't work out."

"Rickey would have obviously liked to play for Detroit," Neustadt said, "but given the makeup of their roster, it would have been extremely difficult."

Paulding, who was drafted No. 54 of the 2004 draft, played with the Pistons this summer in Las Vegas. But he wasn't invited to their training camp next month. The Pistons renounced his rights Monday, vice president of basketball operations John Hammond said.

"We simply classified it as a numbers game," Hammond said. "Rickey is a quality player and has the skills to play in the NBA. For Rickey, it just wasn't the right time or right place for him in Detroit."

"I don't know exactly what they're looking for me to do, but there's definitely a spot available," said Paulding, who played college ball at Missouri. "I'm just looking forward to playing and experiencing my first training camp."

Paulding, who will be 23 when the season starts, played last season in Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem, averaging 12.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

"My experience in Jerusalem will help me in Sacramento," Paulding said. "I experienced basketball on a professional level from guys who were playing the game as their job. That's my approach now. Basketball is my job."

Really? For a shooting guard? Methinks Ricky needs to find himself a new agent. Guess he could always come in and beat out Price and/or Flores, but as a pure OG on a team which already has 3 of them, don't see much of an opening.

At 6-4 or 6-5 I have trouble seeing where another SG can help or have a chance unless Petrie really is Dumbledore and can create some magic from an unknown such as Paulding. But WTH, the more the merrier for training camp except were are the big guys?

I'm always excited when someone with Ricky Paulding's level of athleticism is on the Kings roster. The Kings are lacking that Mo Evans/Gerald Wallace type freakish athleticism on the current roster to energize the bench and make garbage time interesting.

Unfortunately, Paulding didn't play a whole lot of defense at Missouri. It would be great to have someone athletic like him at the end of the bench as a defensive roleplayer if he's willing to take on that role, but I don't know if he's the guy.

Although I don't think we need one more guard, but Rickey Paulding is really with great potential, someone told me that he has beaten WADE during NCAA, that's why I hope he can play for us.

And I think we should pick him but not MINARD last year, we are lucky to have one more time to sign this player.

So is he strictly a SG or combo guard, because if he can play the point at 6'5" and 220 he'd be a hot commodity no matter how raw.

Veyr much a pure OG, and more SF than PG in a pinch. Leaper/dunker with a shaky shot as I recall.

I think he has a pretty solid chance to the make team, considering Flores and, possibly Price (is he guaranteed or not?). I'm liking this guy..

It's still very early in training camp invites, so I'm sure there'll be bigger players (yes I remember the "plan to only 18 guys in camp" comment).

I think since there'll 3-5 guys coming to camp, 1 is Flores, 2 is Paulding, 3-4-5 TBD.

Well, if:

Brad, Skinner, Shareef, KT, Corliss, Peja and Sampson are the frontcourt, that's 7 guys.

Then Bibby, Hart, Bonzi, Cisco, Martin = 5 more, so that's the entire 12 man roster.

No idea where this opening the agent is talking about is susposed to be -- not even room for Price.

Oh geez...

A simple invitation to camp doesn't mean a bleeping thing, other than that the Kings want to have enough guys around to provide opponents for the guys they're REALLY interested in.

Actually, Maurice Evans was a camp invite who played his way onto the team. Camp invites are longshots, but that doesn't mean they're meaningless.

Little different this year in that Mo didn't have to outperform anybody with a guaranteed deal. He and Barnes knocked out Bluthenal and Minard, who we were mysteriously counting on to make the team with their non-guaranteed deals. Now for Ricky to make it he'd have to knock off a guy with a guaranteed contract, or more likely convince Geoff/the Maloofs to carry another contract beyond the 13 they planned on. And all of this as pretty much a pure OG, a position where we already have a good starter and our last two #1 picks sitting on the bench. Not impossible, but sounds very tough.

I didn't say camp invites are meaningless.

What I said AND what I meant was "a simple invitation to camp doesn't mean a thing."

I'll translate:

The invitation ALONE does not mean a thing. To assume that Paulding or Flores (or anyone other new face invited to show up on Oct. 4) is going to make the team is without basis in fact at this point in time.

You pretty much proved my point with your own statement.

Evans ... played his way onto the team.

EXACTLY!

I agree, but because of the new rule allowing teams to send players to the development league it means that the Kings could designate Garcia to the NBADL if Paulding significantly outplays him, or Paulding could technically make the team and get assigned to the NBADL. So yeah, the Kings are more set at SG than they were last year but the situation is different now and it doesn't necessarily preclude Paulding from making the team. Still, as you said, not impossible but very tough.

I think people are arguing the same thing, but just from different sides. No one is saying Paulding or Flroes don't stand a chance.

Speaking for myself, I was simply pointing out that the invitation to camp wasn't a guarantee of a roster slot, as some people seemed to think. I think we all pretty much agree that if someone is spectacular in camp they're more likely to stay on...

Yeah, their just looking at talented guys. No big deal. I don't see anybody really being able to break into the frontcourt or the backcourt, but we shall see.

I would think a talented big man could have a good shot at beating out Sampson since he is not proven anything.

Oct.4th starts camp??!!!! YES! YES! YES! TDOS has been toooo long!! I'm dancing in the streets! That is only 18 days away! IT IS ALMOST TIME FOR THE SEASON TO BEGIN!!! I don't really care who shows up at camp at this point. I am just ready for some KINGS basketbal!

chelle- guess what? I've got a fever, and the only perscription...

is more ARCO ARENA cowbell!

I'm so pumped...I just want it to start! We're all gonna be wearing purple and black plated diapers. Woohoo!

Tell me about it! We should find out soon which BBALL games for the Hornets are going to be played here at the PMAC in Baton Rouge and which ones will be in Oklahoma. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Kings get one of the games here. If not, oh well! I will be listening online. I HOPE I CAN MAKE IT THAT LONG!!!!!!!!!

Are they really listing Ricky Paulding at 6'5"?

The guy is really around 6'2" or 6'3".

Watching him in college I figured he was smaller than listed, but IIRC he even measured out a half inch or so shorter than our old friend Ricky Minard.

He's built solidly, but I don't think he can man the OG spot in the NBA. And like most undersized 2's, he lacks the ballhandling and playmaking to make the transition to the point.

My guess is that both he and Flores lose their chance at a roster spot to Ronnie Price.
