McCants only plays one position, and GP likes more versitile players. Your right about McCants not taking Donte's minutes at least directly. But, if he backs up Martin then where will Cisco play. Hopefully, we pick up a PG in the draft, so Cisco won't get much time there, with Martin & McCants at the 2 not much PT there, so all that's left is the 3. Noc & Cisco & Donte all playing the 3 mean little PT for Donte.Mccants is a good defender and scorer and hes young, if we can resign him for cheap hell yea do it. Donte will be getting his minutes at SF/PF. Mccants wont effect him. Itll be nice to always have a a gunner at shooting guard when Martin comes out Mccants come in and keeps the scoring pressure on.

We're going to need another swing player, but as a reserve and not as a backup. We should be able to get a second rounder or undrafted player for that Someone like Christmas or Danny Green, would be a good fit, and only cost a fraction of what McCants will.

We obviously brought him in to take a look at him, so its a possibility. And he's young enough to be part of the rebuild, so its a double possibility. Add in the fact he is willing to try on defense, and he plays a phsyical style our other weenie wings cannot match, and resigning him is not out of the possibility, nor do I think it should be off the table. He and Kevin both being largely restricted to a single position is a real problem, but we've seen the dynamic potential already...and fortunately have not yet seen the head/mouth problems to this point. In fact at the moment he seems to be adding a bit of toughness to our piddly soft little Charmin boys.
In any case, he's the best/only young piece with a possible future we added in all that trading, and in a rebuild what you are trying to do is pile up young pieces. But the contract would be everything (no long term MLE type deals allowed!). We may be dealing from a position of strenght there though -- Minnesota basically benched him and then firesaled him off. In this market that isn't going to result in any full MLE type offers. Wouldn't surprise me if we could get him back on a 2yr $6mil type deal or some such, where he gets to try to prove himself to earn the bigger deal in the future. If that were true, much would depend on what our strategy is going forward -- are we all about the caproom? 2009 or 2010? Or do we add young pieces where we can?
I agree that the Kings wanted to take a look at him. But, I'm not sure why? He's undersized, and is a one position player which isn't generally a GP type player. Unless, GP thinks he's our next QD, and that the Kings can convert him into a combo guy.
Either way, he's in line for a qualifying offer of $3.6M and has a Cap Space Hold of $7.9M. For a guy that basicly is only going to play 10-12 minutes behind Martin, $6M over 2 yrs is too much. Besides Cisco plays the backup for Martin. Do we need 2 over priced backups. We probably could use another wing as a reserve, but McCants won't like been the 3rd guy in the rotation at the 2.
Mccants wouldnt just be playing minutes at SG, he can play the point ala. Bobby Jackson when Cisco is on the floor. And hes not that undersized, yah hes only 6'4 but the guy weighs 30 pounds more then Martin. And he plays with physicallity. Plus hes athletic and a good defender, so his height shouldn't come into this equation too much as a negative aspect. He was guarding Al Thorton pretty good in the clips game and ALs got a 5 inch height difference on him. Every time we get tough nosed gritty players like Rashad we never end up keepin em (artest,Evans,Bonzi) and thats why our team is so pathetic and weak. We got a good foundation right now of some gritty players to build on, (Mccants,Thompson,Nocioni) are all willing to lay it all out on the line and lay some players out if the game gets physical. And we are going too need as much of that as possible with the soft guards we have right now. Keep Rashad im sick of our team looking like a bunch of soft pansies out there.
I don't think anyone's talking about the MLE. The OP even said the idea was for less than the MLE. I like Brick's 2 year $6 mil idea. If not, we can find scoring elsewhere. But I like what I've been hearing in terms of his toughness and attitude.
