Reggie Theus For Head Coach!

We need to start putting him in these polls. I think he would be a perfect fit. Here's what I wrote in my original post about him:

Why not consider Reggie Theus for the head coaching position? He's the head coach at New Mexico State, and worked under Rick Pitino at Louisville. Everyone loved him when he played in Sac, he's the perfect public relations person the Maloofs are looking for, and he'll get instant respect in the locker room since he's a former player. It would be a very popular choice, in my opinion. I do wonder if he's a defensive minded coach. There is a $550-thousand dollar buyout in his New Mexico State contract if he chooses to pursue another job.

Works for me... how about you?

Should I design a t-shirt?

Well he's a pretty damn good coach. He even took some high school kids to the state finals on the tv show, Hang Time.

Reggie is a great guy...would be very popular immediately with fans and players....has the energy the Maloofs and Petrie are looking for...would have to surround himself with real experienced assistant coaches.

I think players would like him...but I don't know if he could earn their respect right away, he was always a great shooter, and a high basketball IQ....I could see him as a darkhouse candidate.

He did commentary on Kings games here and there after he retired... he really knows what he is talking about, and not afraid to offer fair criticism.

He must have met the Maloofs, but he probably has mixed feelings about leaving the program he is part of now.

I would say the Maloofs would at least be agreeable to granting the guy an interview if he wants one.

Theus was as soft as they came as a player. He'd be the Maloofs slick smooth talking schmoozer, but Reggie as tough defensive minded coach is hard to imagine. Ron/Bonzi might just eat him.

LaSalle Thompson has talked several times over the years how Reggie wasn't a bad defender. He has mentioned that Reggie wasnt a bad defender in KC. He mentioned also that it wasnt till the Kings moved here that his defense dropped off. He felt that Reggie concentrated on offense more for 2 reasons. 1 That the team needed scoring and 2 that Reggie thought more offense got him more attention.

I would imagine Reggie has grown up some and his coaching style would be a tad different then his playing days.

Where are people coming up with these canidates? Seriously?

LOL! Theus has one year's experience as a head coach at a low to mid-level college with a 16-14 record to show, yet Whisenant is not a good candidate because he is a women's coach? The comments about a new coach are hilarious! I'm having a great time coming here and reading them.

Seriously...I would look at Michael Cooper. He has experience at every level and is a winner. He has great bloodlines and I think would do a good job.

.... and spit him out like a sunflower shell. And Reggie was Mr. Instant Offense in his playing days. No history of D.

Now Michael WAS Mr. Total D in the later stages of Lakers ShowTime era. He too is from New Mexico as well!!! An interesting candidate for sure. But how can he handle modern players and their, ahhh...... moods?

Wasn't Dick Butkus the coach for a time as well?

It looks like no one can agree on a worthy candidate. It might get so bad that we as fans might as soon be resorting to Ron Artest as a player-coach.

Hey...it worked in the Bill Russell days! LOL!
