Oh boy.

Favre to meet with Childress

ESPN:

Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and quarterback Brett Favre plan to meet at an undisclosed location later this week to discuss the possibility of the former Packers and Jets quarterback renouncing his retirement from the NFL to play the 2009 season with the Vikings, according to a source with direct knowledge of discussions between the two parties.

I have to be honest. The only reason I don't want Favre to come back is so Peyton Manning can at least have a crack at his consecutive starts record.

Other than that, if he wants to play and there's a team that wants to sign him, then fine. Doesn't bother me one bit. I mean, it would be great to see him make nice with the Packers, get his jersey hung at Lambeau Field, maybe be a part of the front office, all that stuff, but I'm not a Packer fan, so if that doesn't happen, oh well again. But as long as he wants to play, and there's a demand for him, great for him.

What bugs the heck out of me is the nonstop media coverage. I'm at the gas station this morning, and the on-the-pump commercial screen is showing an ESPN clip about how Favre is meeting with Brad Childress today. This is the biggest sports story of the day? The NBA Playoffs are in full swing, baseball season is warming up, the Sox and Yankees are playing (in empty New Yankee Stadium) ... and the biggest story is that Bret Favre might want to go play for the Vikings? Get over it already.

Yeah I have to agree. In fact, I just changed the channel to get away from the Lakers win, I knew I couldn't go to any ESPN channel so I knew the only option was NFL Network and of course all Favre.

I don't mind him coming back either, I'm just sick and tired of him not making up his mind. I think this is the 5th or 6th year in a row we've talked about him retiring and the 2nd consecutive season he actually followed through and possibly for the 2nd consecutive time he comes back.

BTW, Rich Eisen is interviewing Niners coach Mike Singletary right now and the first thing he asked him was about Favre!!

I don't mind him wanting to play, I do mind him stringing his team along every season going on 6 years now. He screwed over Green Bay yet somehow if the press is to believe he is the one that feels wronged. He gets traded to the Jets but really didn't want to go there so he retires again, demands a full release and forces the Jets to draft a QB because they traded their QB so he could come in with no pressure last year (ok, this part is all kind of giggly to me as a Pats fan, but its still just wrong). Its just lame.

But since I've never been a Favre fan anyway I'm fine with him destroying his legacy. Let him get the fumbles record to go with his INT record.

What a boneheaded move, I guess he doesn't want a championship.

j/k, going back to the team you are most associated with is fine by me. :)

Ridiculously early Power Poll (Real GM)

Chargers are #2 :).

It means absolutely nothing at this point, but there's no reason to argue that they can't be SB Contenders with their additions on defense and a (hopefully) healthy LT.

Patriots are ranked too low, and Colts are ranked wayyy too low. Even with their coaching changes, Manning calls most of the plays himself. And that's all they should really need to win games.

The Colts lost their offensive coordinator and offensive line coach last week due to changes in the NFL pension plan (I'm not clear on all the details, but word is that they were in danger of losing something like $2 million in benefits). So the only playcaller Manning has ever had, and the long-time line coach that has kept him clean for so long, are both gone, along with the head coach and the defensive coordinator. I understand deepseated concerns about the Colts.

But I think the defense is going to be significantly better, 1) because they got bigger up front (drafted Moala and Taylor, resigned Ed Johnson) and faster in the secondary (drafted Powers), and 2) because they hired Larry Coyer as the defensive coordinator, who isn't shy about bringing more heat.

The offense could potentially take a step back, but overall, there's no reason to think that they'll be unable to move the ball or score points, especially when you consider how bad the run game was last season (they also added Donald Brown, leading rusher in college football last year).

Arizona is too high, Houston is too high, Packers are too low, Chicago is too low, Saints are too low, Lions are too low (despite their record, I don't think they were the worst team in football last year).

Grossman third string with the Texans is too funny. Wow.
Yeah, it's funny how far he's come ("gone" may be more appropriate). The QB for a team in the Superbowl, with full support of the front office, to a 3rd string QB for the newest NFL franchise who have yet to have a winning season.

Is Josh McDaniels running this team into the ground? I fully had his back with the Jay Cutler saga, but has it caused more rifts with the team? If he loses Marshall, the offense won't have a chance at being good enough to compete against the Chargers.

No you're definitely right there. But with the Cutler saga, who knows if Josh is hurting or helping the situation
It was an issue last season, but since then, no one's heard a peep out of Brandon Marshall until just now. I don't know, but when you hire an offensive guru and then lose your two best offensive players, that doesn't bode well for his tenure as head coach.

But if Marshall was already one foot out the door over salary matters it isn't fair to blame the coach.
I don't know if I'd call him one foot out the door, just because he hasn't complained about his contract since last offseason. He didn't make a big deal out of it during the season, he played hard, caught 100 balls, was their best offensive weapon, and there was no problem. I know his concern about his contract didn't go away just because he had a good year, but her certainly wasn't a problem last year.

Still, I understand what you're saying. All I'm saying is that the Broncos hired McDaniels (seemingly) because they had an offensive minded team, and with his contributions, that offense would be top five and good enough to get the Broncos into the playoffs. But if they lose their two best offensive players before they play a game, not to mention the fact that they didn't get considerably better on defense (Brian Dawkins is the biggest change they made there), they are going to go backward. Denver just lost one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL, and the fans aren't going to be excited about the regression. If year one is bad (less than 8 wins), and year two isn't better, it's going to be McDaniels who gets blamed -- primarily because of the Jay Cutler thing.

Grading the draft
Times-Union sports writer John Oehser rates the teams

San Diego Chargers

Who they picked: Round 1 - Ryan Leaf, QB, Washington St. (2). Round 2 - Mikhael Ricks, WR, Stephen F. Austin (59). Rounds 3-4 - None. Round 5 - Cedric Harden, DE, FAMU (126). Round 6 - Clifford Ivory, DB, Troy St. (155). Round 7 - Jon Haskins, LB, Stanford (194); Kio Sanford, WR, Kentucky (234).

Oehser's comment: The entire draft was spent on QB Ryan Leaf, to move up one spot (from No. 3 to No. 2). For that reason, when people grade this draft, it depends on him. Grade: A

NFL Draft drew more viewers than NBA and NHL Playoffs combined
Executive Director DeMaurice Smith was asked his feelings on the overall health of the NFL:
“The health of the NFL appears to be extremely strong. I always start off with the most recent thing that happened in the National Football League, the draft. When you try to get your head around that 40 million people watched the draft, which is more than the NHL playoffs and the NBA playoffs combined. Gentlemen, that’s a healthy sport."
If that's true, then wow. That's incredible. The NFL, with a shorter season and far fewer games than both MLB and the NBA, has truly become a year-round League. To outdraw the playoffs for two other major sports leagues -- during their respective playoffs, by the way -- is a major feat. If there's a work stoppage, it's due in large part to greed and stubbornness.

I must have missed this, but he signed with the Bears and is projected to start. That defense is going to be good again this year, barring serious injuries. And with a run game and a quarterback (no receivers, but still should have a much improved passing game because Cutler > Orton), the Bears might be the favorites in the North, whether Favre is a Viking or not.

I'm a big Bears fan, but I'm not expert when it comes to AF. What's Tinoisamoa like? I'm not familiar with him. Exciting times for Bears fans again. Lets hope they can have a better season than last year. Everything is looking pretty good except our WR corps.
