Race to the Bottom thread

if you mean to suggest that mike bibby will be coaching (or "gm-ing") the kings, i don't think that is going to happen.

i mean, i'm all for second (and third) chances for people, but there has to be SOME kind of a "limit" - like, "you can present yourself as a rehabilitated ex-athlete, but you have still forfeited the right to access ALL occupations (that other ex-athletes with stellar past histories might aspire to") - or something like that.

there was a slight discussion (for the very very first time) on the luka/vlade subject which was just starting to get interesting when it was ordained that it should not continue, which was too bad, because it revealed a bit about vlade's defenders.

The concept of a Vlade defender is still so crazy to me. You could give that man a gun, put him in front of a barrel full of fish, and he'd shoot himself in the foot.

And I'm not sure it'll be Bibby, but I can guarantee we're going to get another Golden Years retread as HC or GM in the next 5 years if Vivek is still around. That little idiot forces the same 3-4 awful decisions over and over again, and putting old Kings in crucial positions that they're radically unqualified for is one of his favorite moves.

He also loves his GS castoffs, so I'm pretty sure we're gonna get Mark Jackson here in some leadership capacity as well in the next few seasons. I'm going full SLAB when that happens.

People have been saying that Mark Jackson was definitely going to be hired here for more than a decade, over what, half a dozen hires? Maybe if it was going to happen it would have happened by now.

I'm gonna remember this post when it finally happens in another ten years 😉

Weren't there rumors that he was Vivek's favorite before we hired Brown? Actually there were DEFINITELY rumors, but being rumors I suppose that's proving your point, not mine. Haha

As of March 16, three teams have 51 losses: the Nets, Wizards, and Kings. The Pacers have 53. The only other team in the vicinity is Utah, with 48 losses. Both the Wizards and Nets are in the midst of long losing streaks, 12 and 13 straight losses, respectively.

I will update this post at the end of the month.

Next 5 games:

Spurs
76ers
Nets
Hornets
Magic

Spurs, 76ers, and Magic are fighting for playoff positions - they need a win. Kings shouldn't surprise either team here. Hornets play like a .500 team. It's not a guaranteed loss, but neither a guaranteed win. The Nets game is the one that matters here. A loss helps the cause more than anything, but if DeRozan is playing the way that he is, you might as well chalk up a W. 1-4 is probable, but 2-3 could easily happen.
The Kings' roster just isn't bad enough to lose out.

this just in:

The Commissioner speaks up" : "We have decided to reward teams who refuse to tank and penalize those who DO (tank). Accordingly, the first pick in the 2026 draft goes to... the Sacramento Kings, pending an investigation as to whether they were TRYING to tank (but weren't very good at it) or whether they were just their own inept selves. We'll keep you posted."

Just looking at the remaining schedules for the five worst record teams. Pacers could easily lose all remaining so recon they got this.
The Wiz best chance of winning another is against the Jazz in Utah, which I actually hope the Jazz win so they are less likely to leap frog us for a worse record.
Brooklyn though has us twice, once at home but they also play the Pacers and the Wiz at home so I like our chances of third worst record.
May 10th should be a nail biter night of ping pong balls.

Well at least the Pelicans won today, they’re coughing up the draft pick to Atlanta anyways so no incentive to lose. All the other losers lost, not helping out our cause.

We’re not catching Brooklyn, Washington, or Indiana that’s over the goal now (this forum’s goal not the dumbass running the team who’d rather watch westbrick and DD stat pad) is to not catch Utah who might not win another game the rest of the year

I would agree, the likelihood of losing out in the race to the bottom to Indiana and Washington is slim at most. However, as I brought up four replies above Brooklyn plays us twice and both the Pacers and Wizards at home. There’s only a half game separating the Nets and Kings and neither of Brooklyn’s games against Pacers or Wizards are at the very end of the season. Jockeying for loses could still be happening especially for the Pacers who will do everything they can to not to lose their first to the Clippers. Utah has a bit of a tough remaining schedule but they do play the Wizards at home.
So im thinking third worst record is quite possible. Will see how it goes and wish for the best.

If I had any faith that Doug and team would not win random games against mid teams I would agree with you. But you know they are going to pick up a random win or two against mid teams because they are dumb.

It’s hard to believe that Doug and the front office are genuinely that short-sighted. Given that the season was lost a long time ago, these recent wins feel orchestrated—likely a directive from higher up to maintain some level of league integrity. The timing is just too suspicious. If we end up with a top-three pick after this, it’ll be clear that this late-season surge was the price of admission.

It’s just the schedule. Kings had the second easiest schedule in the league the last 20 some games.

You are giving them way more credit than I would. This is pretty much the worst franchise in American sports other than the Browns. I don't have them playing 4D chess in a wink wink situation with the NBA to cook the lottery in our favor. If they're going to cook the lottery, it certainly won't be for us.

This isn't the first time this franchise has completely screwed the pooch when it comes to tanking. There were many years in the past where they waited until the last couple weeks before they started tanking or they just went full steam ahead and played all their regular starters until the season was over. I'm pretty sure the last 2 or 3 weeks of each year of Walton's tenure had the Kings playing .500 or better ball every year. They just refused to do the smart thing. The one constant is Vivek.

I’ve completely stopped caring about the ping pong balls. Either they are going to bounce our way or they aren’t. The flattened odds have made it more luck based than anything else. If the Kings end up out of the top 4 there are stars to be found in the remaining draftees. Develop the guys you do draft and package picks for a swing when the opportunity presents its self.

This losing on purpose has completely zapped my interest in basketball, hasn’t happened in my entire fandom. I’m sure my interest will go back up in the playoffs but this loser **** is wack.

If we can hang on to 4th place in the tankolympics, we should have about a 92% chance of getting a top 5 pick. Looking at the past 5 drafts, I think I'd rather be in 4th place than 1st or 3rd...

It's time for Scott to step in and end this season correctly...

Somehow this franchise has managed to bug both sides. They did enough losing early to irritate the anti tank crowd and then F’d up the tank at the end to pee off the pro-tank crowd.

I thought the inability to pick a strategy and execute it was Monte but it apparently also comes from Vivek.

They'd have roughly a 55% chance of getting a top 5 pick if they stayed 4th to last as they are now.
