pre season means nothing

in this games you win by 30 one night and then lose by 30 the other night.
only when the season will start we will see the real Kings (good or bad, i say better from last year for sure).

I think now would be a good time to once again announce that this is just preseason and that, yes, we were missing half of our actual team and inexplicably starting Antoine Wright.

Not that we're going to win 50 games or anything, but I hope no one is jumping off the Tower Bridge because we're losing in the pre-season. We ARE missing half the team, including two 7 footers and our starting shooting guard, among others.

Its preseason, so it does not really, matter, but you would have to say the refs played a major role in this game anyway. They had Reke on the bench inside of 5 minutes, and called 15 fouls on our three most important players we had available in Reke, Cousins and JT, while calling 8 fouls on all the other scubs and wannbe roleplayers.

We got a Cisco sighting, so that was good. Amusing look at the irrelevancy of +/- at times though, as Cisco on paper at least may have been our best player and ends up -15, meanwhile Pooh Jeter comes in, shoots 2-8 for 6pts 0reb 2ast, and ends up +6.

Would have to imagine this performance, again on paper at least, might be enough to save Head's....head from the chopping block, but not agood sign at all for Atchley and Crawford. of course I thoguht those guys might have been gone after last game, so who knows, but its getting time. Little over 2 weeks until the season starts. Got to tighten this up.

I've always felt that the +/- stat was one of the most worthless stats out there. It depends too much on who your on the floor with. But, Oh well, it is what it is. I do think that Westphal needs to settle on a starting lineup and let them play together if he really wants the defense to improve. Defense is mostly about team defense, and that requires cohesion, which comes from playing together. You keep throwing different players out there and you'll never be a good team defensive team. It would great if we had five great individual defenders, but we don't. Most teams don't! Thus, team defense is very important.

Out of Vlade, Webber, Christie, Peja, and Bibby, only Christie would have been considered a very good individual defender, and yet that team was one of the best defensive teams in the NBA for a time. Time to tighten up the unit, and make some decisions...

Actually led the league in opp. fg% one year I believe, and 2nd or 3rd in years right around that, if I'm not mistaken. For all our reputation of being an offensive minded juggernaught and slightly soft, it's true that we were actually one of the best, if not the best, defensive teams in the league in those years. You don't have to play a slow paced grind it out game to be good at defense, you just have to keep opp fg% down, and control the D glass reasonably well.

To add to that. I wonder how many times a healthy Tyreke only plays 20 min????

Like almost all stats, it rarely has much value when you're looking at one game, or a few games. Last night's +/-s mean exactly as much as Tyreke's 0.6 A/TO ratio last night, or JT's 25% shooting.

When you look at someone's +/- over dozens of games or more, it starts to mean something. It's still lineup-dependent, to be sure, but hopefully people think a little when they look at stats, and take that into account.

I will be happy with this team if they make 30 wins this year, disappointed with less. They should be better than last year, but not a whole lot better.

The preseason isn't going to change that.

If the Kings lose to Minni in game 1, them I'm getting my binocs out to scan for jumpers on the Tower Bridge and Renaissance Tower....;)

I think it's worse than that, actually. For instance, although with standard stats you can't tell if a player is a good/bad player from one game, you can look at them and decide whether or not the player had a good game. If Scrub Rookie goes 11-13 for 28 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 turnovers...you know he had a great game. +/- doesn't even give you that much. For instance look at THIS BOXSCORE and only at the +/- column. Wade had a bad game and Joel Anthony was the best player on the floor for Miami. Right? Look at the regular stats and try to convince yourself of the same thing.

I'm unsure how useful +/- (even adjusted) is over the course of a season. But for one game, I'd much rather look at standard stats than +/-. The latter tells you way too little.
