Pregame Offensive Images?

AP - When the Detroit Pistons were introduced before Tuesday night's game, the Arco Arena scoreboard flashed images of abandoned buildings, burned-out cars - nearly every outdated, offensive stereotype of their hometown.

Most of the Pistons didn't see the display, but they went out and wrecked the Sacramento Kings ' home opener anyway.

Tayshaun Prince scored 25 points while making 10 straight shots, and the Pistons emphatically snapped an eight-game losing streak in Sacramento with a 102-88 victory.

The Kings quickly apologized for the scoreboard montage, and the Detroit players didn't hear about it until they got dressed in their locker room after an impressive victory - their first in Sacramento since Feb. 26, 1996.

"To do something like that, it's embarrassing," said Detroit coach Flip Saunders, who saw the video. "It's not called for. There's no excuse for that. Whoever did that owes us an apology. ... I know the Maloofs pretty well, and they've always been nothing but classy. I'm sure they didn't have anything to do with that."

John Thomas, the president of Maloof Sports and Entertainment, claimed he didn't know who was responsible for the video, but promised immediate discipline.

"It was a terrible mistake," Thomas said. "That's not how we do things. We apologize to the great Detroit organization and to the city of Detroit. ... There's no explanation. It was a mistake, and it won't happen again."

The Pistons played with plenty of motivation even though they didn't see the show. Chauncey Billups had 16 points and eight assists, and Richard Hamilton added 21 points and six rebounds as Detroit (4-0) extended the club's best start since 1996.

"I just heard about it," Billups said. "I wasn't really paying attention. That's cold. Bet they won't do that again."

Oh goodie. ANOTHER example of stupidty run rampant in the Kings publicity machine. A mistake??? Gold uniforms and Midas are mistakes. This is much worse than a "mistake"... apparently the problems with our beloved Kings go much further than just no defense. There apparently is no COMMON sense to be found either...

Wow that's terrible. I've lost some respect for the organization.

Didn't the Mavs do somethin similar a year or so ago? I'm trying to remember.
Oh please...

Yes, the Mavs organization also showed a totally classless video before a game and, I believe, received a fine because of it.

Yeah, the whole Doug Christie thing. But even that was at least theoretically tongue in cheek.

Ah well. Just a nice capper to a nice evening. Everything sure did seem to run much more smoothly a couple of years back.

Thanks for confirming that VF. Then the Kings will be fined as well, I expect. Time to pony up Maloofs.

As a detroit resident and Pistons fan I was a little ticked about this, as you can imagine, but we can't always dictate the actions of a few knuckleheads. I feel much better about it since it appears the maloofs weren't endorsing it.

Kstat - I have been a Kings fan since 1985 and I have never been this embarrassed. There is someone on the arena staff who desperately needs to be fired for this - and I hope it is done publicly. This is NOT the type of thing we, the fans, OR the Maloofs OR the Kings organization stand for or condone.

Please - as one NBA fan to another - accept my apologies on behalf of true Kings fans everywhere.

How...why...and, most importantly, WHO? Someone had to okay that. This is the type of thing that the Maloofs need to stop dead in its tracks...

Eh, none of you guys owe apologies. We've all been embarrased by the actions of others (trust me, I know :D ) but that doesn't mean people associated should be held responsible.

As I said, it appears this was just some kuncklehead(s) just trying to be cute. So long as this wasn't a franchise-endorssed idea, it's much easier to take, from my standpoint.

My email to the Kings:

I have been a Sacramento Kings fan since 1985. I have never been as embarrassed as I was tonight when the Jumbotron displayed the disgusting images meant to insult the town and people of Detroit.

It's deplorable and I certainly hope it NEVER happens again.

I honestly hope whoever thought this was a good idea is removed from any kind of decision-making position immediately.

If that's what some people on the staff of the Kings actually think we the fans support, they truly do not have a clue about us and our respect for the other cities and teams in the NBA.

Truly disappointing.

Sincerely,
<my name>

Well, to be honest, I think I would really have to reserve complete judgement until I saw the "said" video but it certainly doesn't sound good. Already front page news at realgm. Not good. Should be all over ESPN tomorrow, and YAY! another great day for a kings fan.

It was the lead story on KCRA sports. Only after talking about the video did they get to the abysmal play of the game...

Didn't see the video, but judging by the reactions of everyone who did I find this pretty disappointing. This is something that is totally unlike the Kings - the Kings have always been one of the classiest organizations in sports and that has been a BIG part of why I like them.

I do appreciate the fact that the Kings apologized IMMEDIATELY and wholeheartedly. It is clear that this was a mistake, not endorsed by the owners, and that disciplinary action will be taken, so I can forgive, but the disappointment lingers.

Just heard on the radio:

Apparently the guy behind the video was a guy named Leeland (sp?) Patton. According to the free press, he has a different special "video" scheduled for EVERY TEAM IN THE NBA.

To the Maloofs, I suggest you guys put a stop to this before the Hornets come to town.....it could get ugly.

As for mr. Patton, his work# and email address just went out over detroit radio.. he's going to be having a very rough day.

I'm amazed this guy is a freaking Harvard grad. You'd think he'd be smarter.

A quick glance at the business hierachry over at Arco suggests that there are at most two guys between Leland and John Thomas, and maybe only one. I have my considerable doubts whether his superiors would just give him carte blanche to make these presentations and show them without some sort of approval.

I'm a Kings fan living in the Detroit area...such a STUPID thing to do. Detroit may not be the best city in the US...but it is making strides. To have that happen, is such a shame. Detroiters are already sensitive to that...hope there is a good apology and whoever did that gets fired.

This is something I would have never expected from our Organization. And I agree with Brick, something like this has to got to get the "ok" from someone higher up. It's sad we had to stoop to this level.

I was at the game and I didn't even notice. One thing I did notice was the completely lame pre-game "extravaganza". With all the smoke and the big gold 6 in the middle........truly pathetic and real boring.

Wait, I didn't see the video, but I'm confused about why this is so bad. What if an opposing team showed a bunch of cows and sheep in pasture and made Sacramento look like a cow town? Somehow I don't think people would be up in arms.

Seems like people are making a mountain out of a molehill.

It's two completely different things. The cow pastures and the rural surroundings of this community are a big part of our business and heritage. However, the run down areas of Detroit conjur up thoughts of poverty, crime and indigent persons and the last time I checked not many people would rather take a relaxing Sunday drive to a run down inner city neighborhood over a drive to the country. Additionally, those parts of Detroit and all cities are always targeted for improvement and revitalization whereas the rural areas of Sacramento and other cities usually are not.

All in all it was a tasteless and a classless move by an organization that in my mind is slipping in the class category. Moreover, for the Kings to come out and say that the video is not representative of the them is foolish because it is representative of the Kings as an organization (not the individuals who comprise the Kings) because the organization did it. Poor taste is poor taste, whether someone brings it to your attention or not.

I guess I can see that. All the same, I think there are far worse things to worry about than this.

Like Peja's rebounding. That's a pretty offensive image right there. ;)

I agree with you, but when this organization has been one of the classiest in the league for some time now and this happens then it's obviously going to create a buzz.

Personally i LIKE it when teams do stupid things like this (except as a fan of the team giving the "blackboard material" motivation to the other team)

i really LIKED it when PJackson and Shaq dissed sac and its fans. I WISH there was more of this:

"we don't like you, you're ugly and so is the horse you rode in on. Your town/fans/wives suck eggs. Now shut up and play and then scamper away with your tails between your legs. Losers."

i LIKE it!! Bring more bad blood, it makes the games more interesting. REALLY dislike each other. bwahahahaaaahaaaaahaAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
