Power Rankings Week 1 (Ready the toilet paper)

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/powerranking?season=2008&week=1

30 (29) Kings 0-3: Making the new coach's curfew? Apparently not a problem on the Kings' first trip of the season. The problem was finding a way to stay within single digits of the other team with Bibby out and Artest suspended.

Boy, sure took us a while to hit rock bottom

Edit: Here's NBA.com's version

30 (20) Sacramento 0-3: Off: 101.4 (21), Def: 120.6 (29) -- We know that Mike Bibby and Ron Artest have been out, but the Kings have trailed by an average of 19.7 points at the half.

Off of that start, these you cannot argue with. Still don't think that will be our eventual spot as the season rolls along, but for the first week at least we really were pretty much the worst team in the league.

So the goods news, I guess, is that we can only get better from here?...or can it still get worse?

rock bottom

wow this is so amazing and meaningful. brings me back to when i first fell in love with the kings watching the 2002 WCFs. Now kings r #30 ... its like wow what a journey ... wellllllll nowhere to go but up i guess.

Heh, it's kind of funny how far, and fast we have fallen.

Hope the players don't give up on us. The fans will still be there cheering them on.

Expected. This season is going to be tough...ARCO didn't sell out on OPENING NIGHT for starters.

Hopefully, the Kings will get a good draft position and pickup someone they can build around.

I guess I'm not that sad about not having League Pass anymore.
Exactly. I don't order the sports pack on DirecTV anymore either.

When you're rebuilding, why the hell do you sign Mikki Moore? Seriously. Save your money and get a good draft pick and use the season to develop solid role player(s) for the future.

Seriously? You don't get any enjoyment out of watching basketball unless the Kings are good?

Forget being a Kings Fan; if you're a basketball fan, League Pass pays for itself in a week.

Actually I'm really angry about it. I was just being sarcastic. I mean, I'm "watching" the Kings game on ESPN gamecast right now. It's really sad.

....and here we are at the beginning of Feb and we have moved-up 14 spots without making any trades. Who would have thunk it? I don't care who you are, you've gotta be at least a little impressed by it.

I continue to hope that the Kings can finish the season above .500 and maybe even reach 45 wins. Maybe we make the playoffs.....I hope so. But if we don't, we could be a 45 win team in the lottery - not a shabby door prize for a team on the rise.

Says a lot about the coaching...It may be a couple seasons, but I think everythings gonna be aaaalright. Haha

I'm sorry, but could you explain how we are a team on the rise? We are not young, and tbh it seems like 45 wins is maximum for this team. I don't see the logic.

Well, with a young coach, a stud shooting guard, and a few good role players, we aren't exactly a team headed downwards either. Thats the main problem. Not to bad, so little room for improvement draft-wise, and to bad to make any noise.

Actually, I think had this team had the extra two months or so (w/o injuries) to get in sync with Reggie and their style of play, we would be around 6th or 7th in the West. But you know what, if the Kings do their job and keep winning one or two of the teams above them will start sliding and hit a losing streak or two. If the Kings can win 2, 3 games for every 1 loss, we might see them in the first round.

The Mark Stein Power Ranking I saw on the ESPN web site had the Kings at #16 above two teams with winning records.

I hope people realise the Power Rankings are just peoples opinions? ;)

Your first paragraph is correct, IMO. I think Theus is a huge step in the right direction. But, almost any team in the entire NBA can say they have a stud at some position. The reason we need to blow it up (IMO) is because we're not putting ourselves in a good position. People look at it like we need to get equal value back in a trade, which isn't the right way to analyse things (again, this is my opinion).

You mean we should get less value in a trade? I presume so.

There is a major problem with this approach and that has to do with fan reaction. As clever as your approach may seem to you, I don't believe it could be explained to the average fan. The average fan would simply see a trade where we get less than we give and pretty soon there would be a fan revolt.

As it is, fans are staying away. Make trades like this and ARCO will only be good for great echoes.

I think what he meant was that a trade should result in our having a better team, and that perception about value equality should take a backseat to that. I don't see that as conflicting with selling tickets, I think most fans would rather see good team basketball than a bunch of mismatched underperformers who used to be famous stars.

You disprove your own argument here... the fans are already staying away. If we stay with the status quo we most likely won't be good enough to reach the playoffs. We also won't be bad enough to net a franchise changing draft choice. So the fan following will not increase. Seeing as its in dismal shape at the moment I think sticking with the status quo doesn't necessarily make sense.

As opposed to blowing the whole thing up and maybe having even less fans than we do now (fans might actually be encouraged by a young atletic team laying it all out there while developing more than an old overpayed team) for two to three years followed by having a young talented core and some money to go get a big free agent which hopefully would put us back in the playoffs for 10 years or so competing.

What we are on the cusp of at the moment is the Mitch Richmond years reloaded. Ron will walk at the end of the year, Bibby won't. Kevin will continue to be one of the best players in the league on a mediocre team. Maybe a few teams will have bad injury years and we'l make one playoff series as the eight seed in that span. I just don't think it's the right course of action.
