Atlanta upside: Gets rid of Antoine Walker (always a good thing), replaces an old scoring point guard (Delk) with a young scoring point guard (House), takes a chance on a Defensive Player of the Year with heavy baggage, gets a proven SG who scores in bunches, and a capable veteran PF. It also gives the team more star power and name recognition with Artest. They almost certainly improve in the near term.
Downside: They lose a tantalizing prospect in rookie Josh Smith.
Boston upside: Gets the dealiest marksman in the league, a more explosive point guard, and added size and defense up front. Payton gets his wish to go out West, Bobby gets his starting job. Sooner-expiring contracts than Pierce's 3 years. With Peja, Bobby, and Scot, they take the title of Kings East from Orlando.
Downside: Trading one franchise player for another-- can Peja be the man? Jackson injured again; asking for trouble? They're in playoff contention; will this disrupt their run?
Indiana upside: Gets rid of Croshere's contract and the headcase Artest, while adding a scoring point guard behind Tinsley, Bird's man Walker, and a banger to compensate for Pollard. Delk will have been on all four of these teams!
Downside: Croshere has played well and was a good teammate. Artest, when sane, is an All-Star. Bradley is no Pollard.
Sacramento upside: We get our go-to guy in Pierce, who brings a killer instinct and improved rebounding. Trade away two chuckers, Mobley and House. As good as Jackson has been, he hasn't been able to play. Payton (expiring contract) will fill the role currently occupied by Eddie House, and the rookie Josh Smith will play SF behind Pierce.
Downside: Loss of Peja's size and sharpshooting, as well as the former Sixth Man of the Year. Give up two legit 3-point threats (Peja & Mobley) for one (Pierce).
Kings lineup:
PG: Bibby/Payton
SG: Evans/Martin/Pierce/Payton
SF: Pierce/Smith/Barnes/Daniels
PF: Webber/Songaila/Daniels
C: Miller/Ostertag
Would you do it? Would they?
Or have I just spent way too much time at Real GM? Don't answer that.
