Playoff-quality

G-League
Like I have said a number of times, starting with my first "optimistic" post early in the season, the Kings are a PLAYOFF-QUALITY TEAM in the making!

Any questions?

If the kings would have thunderously routed the Nuggets as it seemed they were one or two possessions away from in the 2nd quarter before choking I might have came on here and began to at least right the Y in Yes.....but after the actuality of that game it has to be a............

NO

You guys, you guys...

Indeed...this game had to be painful to watch...well, at least the last 45 seconds, anyway. You were there, right??

...you are focusing on the last few minutes of the game in which the Kings blew it--the rest of the game they were playing pretty damn good, weren't they? The Kings had a dominating game over a playoff-quality team--the Nuggets, yet, the Kings managed to lose the game because of a loss of focus and intensity with their expectation to pull off a win in this game, based on the lead that they had managed to keep for most of the game.

No I was not there, but I did see it on tv--there was a lot to like, 'cept at the end of the game.

I stand by my statement that the Kings are a playoff-quality team in the making. I am confident that they'll learn to close out games as a result of this loss that has to sting a lot. Coach T said after the game that "it should sting...if not, then you are brain-dead".

I don't think that the Kings are brain-dead, nor that they don't care. They do care about winning and are making adjustments as they go along and I do anticipate the Kings to start to learn to play with a killer instinct in the closing out games in which they have leads over other playoff-quality teams.

The Kings should have won this game and they deserved to win this game, yet they managed to lose it, so this may instill a killer instinct in them for future games in which they have commanding leads over other good (or bad) teams.

I agree and...

playoff teams win these sorts of games

...I am confident that the Kings will eventually reach that level of winning close-fought games with a killer instinct.

Notice that the Kings have progressively improved in just about every aspect in the games that they have played? Have they regressed in any ways? No.

It was a good thing that this loss to the Nuggets hurt, so now the Kings--I hope--would use the memory of the sting of the loss to use as a motivation to win close-fought games against other playoff-quality teams.

Next test coming right up with the Celtics coming into town. We'll see.

Well, I was actually asking Rock if she was there, because I know she has season tix. And secondly, I wasnt basing my response on just this game. I still stand by my prediction of saying that the Kings will win 37-39 games this year, and I doubt that wholeheartedly that that will be good enough to get us into the playoffs, and why the hell would you, if you're only going to get swept anyway being the #8 seed. The regular season means nothing, this Kings team doesnt have the fortitude as of yet to make the playoffs, and be successful IN the playoffs. This team reminds me so much of 1994-95 it isnt even funny, and I've said that all along. Yes, we have a couple of good young players, but problem is, they all play the same position. We dont have a frontline, we have injuries, and even if we didnt, we still have no frontline...which you need to even be remotely successful in the Western Conference...Denver was a case in point, Camby, Melo, Martin, Nene(even though he's always hurt), that's a whole hell of alot to build on when you put Iverson and Smith on that team...they find ways to win, even with injuries. Is this a better and more inspired bunch of Kings compared to last season, hell yes...is it good enough to make the playoffs and pull out tough wins over the NBA's finest...nope, not yet. Check back in 2 years, hopefully then we might have some more muscle up front.

I would like to see how good this team is when the other 40% of its starting 5 is healthy. We've never seen the team play as a whole so how can anyone make a judgment one way or the other? I look forward to Martin and Bibby being on the team. Just yesterday we were winning without them. People were surprised at how good they were. There was even hope being expressed.

Has everything switched because of one game?

What on earth is wrong with going into the first round and getting knocked out? Hop on a bandwagon somewhere else if you need and NBA Championship. How on earth can you enjoy being a fan of the Kings? The excitement of any game in a playoff series is many times higher than a regular season game. There were times when we begged to play even one game in the post season. There are reasons for that - it's exciting.

I still get excited when we win and feel bad when we lose 'cause I haven't turned my emotions off towards this team. My ego isn't involved in being right or wrong about how I think this team will turn out. I will cheer them on to do the best they can. Why not?

And for those who want a great draft choice, it ain't going to happen. We're going to have a pick between 10 and 20 and that's not going to get a stud nor be a key to the rebuilding process.

I have a question ; Why the hell are you excited about us possibly making the POs? So we can scrape the 8th seed and get sent home early and not have a decent pick as consolation? I really don't understand that mindset. It drives me insane. We are not winning a title soon and encouraging the FO to keep plugging away with vets to get us that oh-so-beloved 8th seed is not going to do us ANY favours. We need to rebuild.

We're not going to the POs either, thank God. We're not good enough.

We are set as is with about the 13th pick. if you make the playoffs as the 8th seed you get the 16th or 17th pick. Not a big difference. Don't act like if we don't make the playoffs we are going to get a top 5 pick. ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. We will not even get top 10 pick this year. Might as well hope for a chance in the playoffs with a 3 or 4 higher pick. We are to talented to get that coveted top 5 pick. Even if we trade our best player (Ron Artest) we still get back talent and still have enough talent (Salmons, Garcia, Martin, Bibby, Beno, Moore and Miller to not get a high pick. Even if you get rid of Bibby as well you have seen Beno is a good player as well.

I am sick of people thinking that if we don't make the playoffs we automaticaly get the #1 or a top 5. We are going to get somewhere between 12 and 17 face it nothing is going to change.

Being in the playoffs even for the 8th spot only does not mean an automatic sweep these days. just ask the warriors last season. it takes just one good momentum and unpredictability to make great surprises for the POs. there's still 4 months to reshape the team character and let this team progress and develop. i'm not giving up on this team just because of one choked game. even known good teams have their own moments like this. ask the celtics or the spurs. this is totally a better season than last year. and this team's very visible improvement game and character wise is a reason enough to convince me to believe that were going on a right direction and being in the playoffs is never out of the picture. :p:p

Even if we beat the C's, we're still not a 'playoff quality team', we have a couple of seasons of smart building before that happens. Any team that has Brad Miller and Mikki Moore as it's starting frontline is no better than a team that had Olden Polynice and Brian Grant as their starting frontline. But...this team is more entertaining than last year, which is cool I guess, at least we have a some hope for the future.

I think some people think it is sophisticated to think that making the first round of playoffs is no good.

I have already said that the playoffs are far more exciting than the regular season games. That's a plus. I like excitement.

If there are playoffs, the Maloofs make more money so we can afford better players. That's a plus.

If we give all appearances of a franchise starting to dig itself out of a minor hole, it will make it easier to recruit free agents. No free agent wants to come to a city that is losing and doesn't even seem to be trying to win. If the team wins more than half of its games when Bibby and Martin are back, we'll look like a team with a future.

If we do a lot better than last year, it will make Theus look good. Free agents want to play for a good coach. If we do a lot better than last year, the fans will start to come back. I think one year with Musselman has killed fan spirit. The ARCO mystique is gone. No more full houses. We need full houses so that free agents will come to be part of what used to be a legendary experience, being a King playing in front of an ARCO crowd.

All of this makes signing free agents easier and we need free agents to compete at a high level.

No free agent will want to come to a small town that has a losing team where the fans have turned their back. Fans are turning their back in the real world and on this board. This may look like the beginning of a free fall into long term mediocrity.

I would certainly still rather 13th pick than 17th and making the POs. People are rediculous. We are not even near competing for a championship. Best case scenario? Getting a shock 1st round win and being the cuties everyone cheers for until we get sent home brutally by a team that knows how to win. Does anyone actually believe we can hang with the Spurs and Celtics of the NBA? I don't want to be in the POs until we have a bright future and a legit shot at being a contender in the future. Making the POs is just hendering any chance of future success.

Not once did I say we'd be getting 1-5th pick, read my previous posts, I've always displayed my unhappiness about the lack of direction the Kings have taken. We need to ship out our vets for young guys, picks and expirings. People need to forget about getting good players back. It defeats the purpose unless they're young.
Why do you insist on fooling yourself into thinking we have a chance if we get to the POs? We are not the warriors, we do not have a top 5 PG in the NBA surrounded by young, athletic, exciting support players. We are not a team on the rise. Get your priorities straight. We want to be competitive. Making the POs will do nothing for us.

We are possibly in the worst situation of all the teams in the NBA. And here you are wanting to continue drifting, wandering into complete oblivion until we are completely forced into making a change for the better.

I think some people think it is sophisticated to think that making the first round of playoffs is no good.

No one thinks that. It's just far smarter to want to have a future but some people seem to think we'll magically become contenders if we keep plugging away at giving average vets the mid level every year. Look at every elite team in the NBA and tell me how they got there. I can guarantee not one got there by doing what we're doing now.

I have already said that the playoffs are far more exciting than the regular season games. That's a plus. I like excitement.

You think it's more exciting to be knocked out in the first round and have a bad pick than get a good pick and have yet another exciting young player to follow the next season? Delighet you're not GM, although you might as well be with the way Geoff is running things at the moment.

If there are playoffs, the Maloofs make more money so we can afford better players. That's a plus.

Yep. SAR and Moore have been blistering signings.

If we give all appearances of a franchise starting to dig itself out of a minor hole, it will make it easier to recruit free agents. If the team wins more than half of its games when Bibby and Martin are back, we'll look like a team with a future.

Seriously? What we're doing now is digging ourselves out of a hole? I'm fairly sure what we've done the last few years has been what's got us into this situation.

If we do a lot better than last year, it will make Theus look good. Free agents want to play for a good coach. If we do a lot better than last year, the fans will start to come back. Theus is going to be a good coach IMO. That's a good move by the Kings. But nobody is going yo want to come to a team getting knocked out of the POs in the first round year in, year out. Now leave it a few years, build a good young team, improve, have cap space and that's when players will want to come.

All of this makes signing free agents easier and we need free agents to compete at a high level.

No free agent will want to come to a small town that has a losing team where the fans have turned their back. Fans are turning their back in the real world and on this board. This may look like the beginning of a free fall into long term mediocrity.

We only sing average FAs. We will never sign big name free agents because A) We don't have cap space and B) No one will want to come to an old whipping boy team.

The real challenge is advancing in the playoffs, not making them. We're no where near able to advance in the playoffs and it's a long shot we even make them. We need to blow it up and rebuild.

And you think NOT signing people like Salmons and Moore and totally sucking will make us look like what? What?

We will have cap space in two years and nothing we have done in the last two years could have changed that. The MLE signings are irrelevant to that. The only thing that the MLE signings have done is improve our team.

If you are not willing to listen, why converse?

How long have you been a Kings fan?

Merry Christmas folks as we go around and around and around.

What does that have to do with anything?

My point is that the only challenge that matters is advancing in the playoffs, that should be the only goal; not just making them and getting knocked out in the first round, that accomplishes nothing.

When better than half the teams in your league qualify for the playoffs, making the playoffs should only be your goal if you are in a true rebuilding mode. It is my position that when the average age of your team is 27.5, you are not, in fact, rebuilding, no matter how young your "best" player might be. When the average age of your team is that high, then you should ideally be in contending mode, when you're in the window to be competing for championships, not trying to "surprise" somebody in the first round.
