Players that I would target with the 9th pick:

Franz Wagner is my guy in this draft. No, he is not going to be a star, but he may turn out to be a glue guy that every team needs. I compare him to Richard Sherman of basketball, he's lacking some athleticism but he's big and he beats you with his brain.

Here is a nice breakdown someone did on his defense. I also posted a shorter clip of Wagner's defense a few posts back.

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

I'd be a lot happier drafting Wagner if we could secure at least one more pick and went with one of the high risk high reward guys.

I know team wants to win now and so is most likely to trade 9 and players and try for a home run trade though so not getting my hopes up that we'll somehow get more draft capital.

i think Wagner will mesh extremely well with Haliburton. I’m hoping we go with a high IQ guy unless Kuminga falls to 9 then you have to go with his upside.

Wagner, Haliburton and HB would make a very nice trio - smart players who know what the right basketball play is, w/or without the ball, and can work together to execute. The prospect of Ty and any of the hi-IQ young guys the Kings might draft working together over time is pretty great.

The Wagner talk is very similar to what we were hearing about Hali last year "Good player, but more of a role player, not really good at one thing, not a lot of upside."
I don’t recall that at all. He wasn’t on the radar for most here, because most assumed Hali would go much earlier than 12.

And I was on record, multiple times, that he was the most impressive player that I saw all year—starting from the Xmas tournies. I would’ve taken him number 1 had the Kings had the first pick.

As for the Wagoner (lolzzzz) love, he’d be a great pick in the teens. At nine? Trade down or pick upside.

I'm assuming Jamal was referring to what the draft experts on the national sites were saying. A lot of them had his ceiling at great role player on a winning team.

Actually kind of, but they're fairly good at all things, just not great at any one thing which makes them perfect to go along with a player like Fox. Yeah, if your franchise were starting with Haliburton/Wagner that might be a tough go but the Kings aren't. Bagley still might be a 1/2 option punch with Fox too. There's plenty of upside on the squad still.

Im not sure I want Wagner. I do want a high IQ player though and not an athletic marvel with low IQ. We have seen enough of them to last a lifetime in Sac.

I want BPA and hope Bouknight is there at 9. It’s not just the athleticism, it’s the craft and the real time innovation. Game speed is underrated.

I can see the attraction to Bouknight but would then be dead curious how Monte will work in all the guards. I guess Davis may not be retained even though he seems a good option in the 2nd unit.
I also like Keon Johnson a lot, a bit more size than Bouknight so possibly could play a bit of SF in time. Not quite the shooter but should be exciting to watch and has a killer defensive mind set.
Moody is still my guy if there when we pick. He should definitely have the size to cover SF’s and appears to have a smart all around game.

Draft Bouknight; trade Fox for assets.

I just can’t see getting another guard. The gap in players isn’t nearly enough to add yet another guard to an already incredibly unbalanced team.

if you end up drafting a guard to me it’s an indictment of your moves at the trade deadline.

Bouknight and Johnson are the same height. However, Bouknight's wingspan is 1 inch bigger and his standing reach is 4.5 inches bigger.

your right… perhaps I’ve spent too much time selling low while hoping Bouknight would shoot up the draft pushing Moody down.
Even Moody is not great size to play the 3.

I don’t see the kind of handles on Johnson that Bouknight flashes. Not just advanced handles, but also real time innovation and craft. Whereas Johnson will beat an opponent with power, Bouknight has two or three different ways to worm his way to a score. I think both can be elite, if they hit their ceiling, but I just have more faith in Bouknight than Johnson.

As for Moody, I’m not as high on him as others. I think he’s a late teens to 20s pick. I don’t see him as any more than an average 3&D long term, somewhere between Corey Brewer and Mikal Bridges. He rarely gets to the rim on drives, often picking up his handle and shooting a mid range or a pass. Those tendencies will get stuffed at the NBA level. And though I think he’ll be a good defender, he’s not in the same defensive class as Thybulle, Ariza, or even his own teammate Herb Jones (who has truly elite defensive potential).

you make a good case for Bouknight, I just haven’t considered him as much because of our current guard situation.
At 9 that approach is get the best player on board and sort the team out later.

Using a pick that high with need fillers of an equal value level available to basically fill the role of Davis would be a mistake. Yeah, Moody is easily in the wing category of options at his size and with the ability he showed in college to guard up to PF.

Who is even considering Buddy? Between Fox, Hali, Davis and Wright you don’t have minutes for a 4th guard!
Exactly, the problems are still there without Buddy and without Buddy you're actually losing the only SG on the roster with the aptitude to play some SF. You're likely looking at any player unable to play SF being 4th in line at the SG next season even if Buddy is gone. Stupid way to use a 9th pick in a draft where there are talented wings ripe for the picking.
