Paul Westphal=Worst Newcomer?

startingtohurt

G-League
ESPN just came out with their list of worst newcomers today and look who received a vote, our very own Paul Westphal! Congratulations Paul! Hey, at least it's press, right?

Why is it that Westphal is thought of a such a bad hire sometimes? I remember reading articles with quotes of "the kings falling on their face" with the hire. Can someone provide some insight into this thought process.

He's had some success and he's clearly a more established coach than the last couple of Kings hires, but he failed at Seattle and then miserably at a small college. Not the best momentum to bring back to the NBA. Either way, probably a good hire for the team at this point.

I think there was a lack of ambition with the hire, but given our current status calling it a "worst" hire is kind of silly. Paul Westphal has actually accomplished a lot as an NBA coach. Won 60 games. Been to the Finals. He might well turn out to be a solid retread type guy. Doesn't have to be. He's failed his last few times out, so its certainly possible he fails again. But there is nothing to really hate about the selection other than the lack of shooting for something more.

wow worse newcomer? that's pretty harsh. oh well when has espn ever given the Kings any love? Will they go back and eat their words if they turn out to be wrong?

Other than a few very knowledgeable guys at ESPN, most of them are just dart throwers. By that, I mean they're really intellectually lazy. A lot of them are just talking heads. No different than the talking heads on broadcast news. People lend them more credence than they deserve. I would suggest that there are people on this fourm that are more informed that some to those at ESPN.

So other than something to read in the offseason, I wouldn't put much value on who they think will win rookie of the year, or who the worse newcomers are. I read an article the other day by a so called reputiable web-site that listed the writers top 50 centers in the league. Hawes wasn't even included on the list. Now I would probably question a list of 25 that didn't have Hawes on it. But 50? They had backup centers on the list that only averaged 6 minutes a game. It became obvious to me that the writer didn't omit Hawes because he didn't think he merited it, but because he probably forgot who Hawes was. Thats what I call being intellectually lazy.

Considering how bad we were last year he could improve the team significantly and we'd still suck and they could proclaim the were "right".

Westphal isn't a headline grabber but he's also not a young guy trying to make a name for himself without regard to how it may effect the players and their development which is something this franchise hasn't had since we let Adelman go.

So what's going to happen as a result of this disasterous hiring, we're going to drop down to 7 wins? :p

We might not get any national broadcasts! We might be shut out of the Christmas Day games! Some fans of other teams might point and laugh at us!!!

He is, however, working on a two year contract. Otherwise I would agree, but these short term deals we keep handing out unfortunately all have a tendency to inspire "win now" thinking in a coach wanting to inspire a renewal. If you want a coach to think long term, you kind of have to give him long term rope the way Minny did with Rambis.

So.....lets look at Adelman:
Good in Portland
Bad in Golden State
Good in Sacto
Good so far in Houston

How about Nellie? Mostly good but remember his time in NY? Nellie failed coaching Webber IMO. CWebb was still very young and Nells should have been the wiser more mature person, but....................

Almost all coaches have ups and downs. Thats because the players win or lose the games.

Although Adelman's time at Golden State could be looked at as a failure, most people forget that the team did improve under him. He just didn't have any horses...

Just checked out the article on ESPN. Westphal is the only coach that received a vote, all of the rest were players. The bottom of the article lists all of the voters but they do not state who voted for who.

One of the voters was Avery Johnson....maybe he was a little burned the Kings didn't offer him the 10 mil a year for 10 year contract he was looking for.:p

You've gotta love it...:D

He he. Shaq, Artest, Hedo, Vince, and Rasheed are on both the BEST and the Worst Newcomer list. Brillant. Just make a list of the best and the worst with the same people in them and you cannot be wrong. Why didn't I think of that?

Is that called playing both sides of the fence, or is that sitting on it?

ESPN is mostly just big market bandwagon drivel. I remember in the Adelman days when locals in SAC said Turkoglu had star potential. You would here crickets chirping over at ESPN when you mentioned his name. Now its Ooohs and Ahhs.

I wish you would post that on ESPN comments for the whole world to see lol.

ESPN sells air time and you don't spark interest with mundane, non-controversial items. Realty has nothing much to do with it. Just us ranting about it is what ESPN wants. Look how many times they are mentioned in this thread!!!

Yeah, but Skip Bayless is still horrible, nonetheless! lol

Best on ESPN:

Scott Van Pelt
Kenny Mayne
Linda Cohn
John Anderson
Neil Everett

WORST on ESPN:

Rachel Nichols
Ed Warder
Skip Bayless
Jay Harris
Tony Korheiser

Wouldnt they be able to spark more interest by saying something controversial about a more popular team than the Kings? If reality has nothing to do with it and its all about ratings then why dont they go trash the Lakers?

I think they will eventually have to do that on Artest. But right now, after getting the Championship recently, there is just nothing juicy they can say about the Lakers team.

Anyways, good or bad, this thing about Westphal is good enough for us Kings fan to talk about. I think somebody needs to start a thread on how fans want Westphal to run this team, especially with regards to balancing winning and development of our players. For sure, that would be very entertaining with lots of silly suggestions. :p

The thing is: No one knows ANYTHING about how/what this Kings team will do, it's a TOTALLY new team with a TON of new blood, and a whole new coaching staff. All this prognosticating should wait at least until we get a pre-season game or 2 under our belts to see how the team plays together as a whole. Everything is unknown...and for anyone to judge how good/bad a move Westphal is at this point is just plain stupid.

Nope...Screamin' Skip Bayless is MUCH worse than Steven A.
Skip Bayless is HORRIBLE, I agree there. But Stephen A. Smith just wants to take Kobe's jock strap and drink the leftover sweat, and I can't handle some man who hangs from another mans jock so hard. And he is wrong 95% of the time, which is why he no longer is employed by ESPN.
