Paul W on 1140 right now

Thinks several parts of the team are suitable for a winning team, some reshuffling needs to be done.

Team is in a position to add many pieces - a good thing.

City loves the team and FO wants to win and knows how to do it.

They have done it before (FO) and they want it again. He's convinced they will do what it takes to put a winner on the floor.

Since 2000 has been a head coach for 5 years in college to be near his son, an announcer, and an assistant with the Mavs for a year. Hasn't been away from the game at all. Not as an NBA head coach, but still in the game, so to speak.

Talking about being in the broadcast booth and how it gave him a different point of view on the game and was a positive experience.

Some college kids are more mature than some that get into the NBA (guys that don't jump in after the freshman year).

Every player has a different level of maturity and have to be dealt with appropriately.

On Beno: Has been impressed with him while trying to guard him - has a lot of skill. Would like to talk with him about his performance and feels he can produce - has seen him play really well and would like him to get to that point again.

On Kevin: Kevin is one of the most complete offensive players in the league and hampered by injury. If Kevin is healthy he can put 20-25 points on anyone and is a creative and efficient scorer.

On being called an offensive genius: appreciates the kind words, takes it with a grain of salt. Scoring by itself doesn't win games, needs good D and rebounds. Good O is entertaining for the fans and he likes to get up and down. Doesn't like 71-72 scores in the 4th q.

First, thanks for posting this .. I live a million miles away and dont get to hear these local interviews.

anyways, was wondering about the beno comments .. not sure if it was a typo or what but, what does 'has been impressed with him while trying to guard him ' is our olddd coach playing D on Beno?

I'm guessing he is talking about when he was an assistant for dallas a couple years ago. He's talking about game-planning for the kings and beno.

Probably was just trying to put a positive spin on the situation with beno. We all know he sucks, but you can't come out and say that as the new head coach.

I don't think that's entirely true. We've seen that Udrih can be a contributing player. If Westphal can bring out the best in him, I'm all for it.

I was exagerating a little bit. I'm just really dissapointed in how beno played last year. Statistics are one thing, but I didn't see enough effort from him on a regular basis. Thats what bothers me. I think he can contribute, potentially give us 10pts/5ast a game off the bench. I would love it if he could do that, but don't want him starting at pg next year.

He is a solid player but not a starter on a good team. Thats why the best we can hope for is for coach Westphal to get Beno's confidence and production up and then Petrie to trade him to a team in a need of a PG.

Depending who we draft, we might be just such a team this year.

Yeah, that is what he meant. Sorry, should have clarified, but I am not the fastest typist in the world and I was trying to keep up. ;)

Only problem is Beno played for San Antonio not Dallas.

Here's a site you can go to and then just click on KHtK and listen away. I listen to Mike and Grant almost every day in Mexico.

WarHawk's critique was very accurate. Obviously Westphal isn't going to come in and criticize anyone right off the bat. What he said had some credence to it. He simply said there were times when he was impressed with Beno's play. He's curious why his play took a downslide last year and he would like to ask Beno why he thinks his play deteriorated last year.

By the way WarHawk, good job!

I think he meant that he got to watch him play against Dallas when he was there. But I got the impression that he was refering to Beno's first year with the Kings when he played pretty well. Westphal would have been in the front office with Dallas, but I'm sure he had good seats for the games..

He's supposed to be a run n gun offensive type of coach isnt he?

I wonder if this will affect our draft? Jennings?

Very much so, but he is more of a "whole game" coach like Adelman, thinking offense can be a tool to help open games. As Adelman said after his departure, if you want a defensive team, you need defensive players- you can only make do with what you have. That would be, in my opinion, a similar PW response. The strengths of this team are scoring and speed, the weaknesses are rebounding, toughness, and defense. So the challenge is to build on the strengths while adressing the weaknesses. I still think the Kings will draft one of Rubio, Jennings, or Evans, but there could be a couple curveballs.

I could not agree more. Beno DOES have potential that is being untapped as of this point. He could be a starter until the Kings contend, and then still be a decent back-up. At least get him to his potential for trade value.
