Pacers' Jackson hit by car, fires handgun, police say

It still doesen't explain what the hell they were doing in a strip bar at 3 am during the training camp. He might be the victim in the asult situation but he is still very unprofessional, imature and irresponsible.

How is being at a strip club at 3am unprofessional and irresponsible? So because there athletes they can't go to a strip club? Maybe they only need three hours sleep a night who knows? What does being at a strip club have to do with being unprofessional and irresponsible? Sure what Jackson did when he got out of the strip club stupidely firing a gun in the air now that was unprofessional and irresponsible.

professional athletes have the misfortune of being in the public eye constantly. so, yes, because they are professional athletes it is indeed irresponsible and unprofessional to be at a strip club at 3 in the morning during training camp. these guys are role models. they participate in the nba's public programs. they are out there telling kids to get an education and avoid violence. discharging firearms in public--in self defense or not--is not the proper way to attempt to uphold the positive image that david stern values so much. these players shouldn't be putting themselves in places and situations in which they might be provoked into pulling out a gun. its bad form.

Are You kidding ? They are paid big money to perform at the highest level. With that money comes the responsibility. They should have been in bed resting for another practice. It is pathetic. Very neglegent at least. So if a doctor does the same and he kills a patient next morning because he wasn't on top of his game - is that OK too ? In Europe - they would be fined, suspended and some very unhappy fans would let them know that that is a wrong way ro represent their club. They had all summer to do what they want. They only work 6-7 months a year (some work more). At least what can be asked from them is to do their best. BTW - do Your parents know what You do online ?

You're kidding, right?

You're comparing a professional athlete out on the town during training camp to a doctor? And you're saying no one in Europe ever goes out late partying?

Give me a break, piksi. This is one of the lamest arguments I have ever seen.

Training camps in Europe happen moslty away from everything for a reason.
I am saying that when athletes get caught being unprofessional- they get punished.
And yes I am comparing a professional to another professional. Just because they are dumb athletes it doesn't mean that they must be held to a different set of rules and that they can do whatever they feel like. Being retarded doesn't excuse their behaviour.

I would have to agree that it is irresponsible. College teams have rules and curfews about partying during a season and they don't get paid. I know our football team stays in a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get away from the college area on the night before games for this reason. I understand that they are adults and have the right to do what they want to do, but I rather have the player on my team who is in bed at a decent hour and resting his body for the next day. I think it is even worse when players are seen out partying until 3am on the night before games (although Dennis Rodman was FAMOUS for this- I think he even flew to Vegas the night before a playoff game in Utah  and still performed at his best). But either way, I think that they should realized how blessed they are to be in the position they are in.. there are 30 NBA teams- 15 players max on a team that is 450 players who have this chance. It is a personal choice in the end, but like I said, I think the right choice would be dedicating themselves to their profession.

However, I do agree that Jackson is probably the victim in this situation- despite the fact that he probably shouldn't have been out in the first place. I bet it is scary to be in the limelight the way NBA players are and I can understand having to protect themselves.

I'm just a little tired of you always making value judgments about other people's mentality.

So he was out at a club? Big deal. It doesn't make him retarded. It makes him normal.

He didn't start the incident. He handled himself pretty well, as did his companions.

You act as though everything that happens with American athletes is bad and everything in Europe is oh, so much better. Well, I'm tired of it. If you don't like American athletes and the NBA, I would suggest you quit watching.

I don't mind that he was out partying, I'm not going to pretend that NBA players don' go out partying or that they shouldn't be able to. The fact that he went out partying in a well-known BAD part of town is what kind of disturbing - just not smart.

That's nice and true in theory, but sadly it's too far gone in the NBA world to complain about it anymore. NBA and other pro sports league players are notorious for behavior like this, that is when they're not busy impregnating multiple women and other crap like that. One of these days, I'm sure we'll see an NBA player whose off-court activities consist of reciting poetry and gardening.

You are assuming lots of things here and you are trying to impose your timelines and guidelines to all of them.

1. Maybe they had a day off for practice or maybe their practice was supposed to start at 2.00 in the afternoon.

2. Maybe they tend to sleep for 4 hours in the night and 3 hours of nap in the afternoon, it helps their biological system being on the east coast. When they play agains the WC teams they have stay up late and if they are not used to staying up late then they will not be able to play well and their body just wont respond. Coaches tend to have practices around times when they expect games to be. WC games are at 7.00 PM which is 10.00 PM for them and they have to be up until atleast 1.00 AM.

3. How many doctors have killed their patients because of a lapse, were they all due to sleeplessness. Do you know that doctors never go to a strip club and stay late cos they might have to see a patient the next day. There are various professionals in this world who do important jobs and they all have to be on top of their game, if they dont its something only they can control and they will pay the price. (Ask Bonzi, Shawn Kemp, Sprewell and Isiah Rider)

4. In Europe there is lots of betting going on and Italy the world cup champion in soccer went through a big ordeal of betting and match fixing in their league. Maybe we will see more of those scandals coming out soon, basketball though popular is still not there with soccer and the basketball stars there dont get that much attention to be caught in news headlines. I am sure there would be many such incidents that happened there and would have gone unnoticed.

5. European fans may not be the best, it might seem good for you but imo they are people who have to be ashamed of themselves. Hooliganism in soccer or basketball because you dont like one team or you dont approve of your teams performance or behaviour is not the right way to express your displeasure. Compared to the security that you have to provide in europe for these kinds of events what we see in the US are miniscule.

6. Because they work 8 months a year, arent they allowed to have fun for 8 months a year. Should you hold off your birthday celebrations to the offseason, your wedding anniversary before training camp, your best friends wedding and bacehelors party after the post season.

As much as I hate lots of things they do, I wouldnt agree on this point. They have to be back on the court after maybe a day or two irrespective of whatever happens with their family. Didnt Shaq and Kobe come back to play after they had their respective kids last year. You and me would have a cozy two week vacation to take care of the baby and be with them if we wanted to , but they cannot afford to. These players do sacrifice a lot and they are not machines.

That remark about what he is doing online was uncalled for, even if he is under age (big assumption) I will be proud if my kid is spending time online talking about basketball. Anyone can come back with a personal remark about you asking if your grand kids came and helped you with your typing today, but thats not the intent of this board and it will be better if we keep it to topics and not people.

Man arrested in connection with Pacers incident

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2619272

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was arrested on criminal recklessness charges for a fight outside a strip club in which police say Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson fired a gun in the air, was slugged in the mouth and hit by a car.

Deon Willford was arrested Tuesday on felony counts of criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license, police said.

The 23-year-old Willford drove the car that hit Jackson, said police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount. Other details of the fight could be released this week if police wrap up their investigation, Mount said.

Willford was being held at the Marion County Jail on $100,000 bond. Roger Rayl, a spokesman for the Marion County prosecutor's office, said no court appearances had been scheduled yet for Willford.

Police also questioned another Indianapolis man, who was later released. Police were still looking for a possible third person who had been with the other two men at the time.

Four Pacers were involved in the mayhem at Club Rio early Friday. Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air in apparent self-defense and was struck by a car that sent him tumbling onto the hood.

Coach Rick Carlisle said Saturday that Jackson and teammates Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter committed an "error in judgment" by staying out late during training camp but he was relieved no one was seriously injured.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana in the passenger-side door of point guard Tinsley's car. But no arrests were made because there were three others in Tinsley's car and police could not determine who had the marijuana, authorities said.

Jackson was expected at Pacers practice Tuesday for the first time since the fight.

The Indianapolis Star reported on Monday that Jackson has had his probation extended one year after he did not complete the terms of the sentence he received for the 2004 brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Oakland County (Mich.) assistant prosecutor John Pietrofesa told the paper that last week's incident had no bearing on his decision because no charges were filed.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Jackson charged with criminal recklessness

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson was charged with criminal recklessness Wednesday following last week's confrontation outside a strip club.

Jackson was charged with the felony and two misdemeanor counts by the Marion County prosecutor five days after he and three teammates fought with patrons. Jackson was punched in the mouth and hit by a car, and police say he fired a gun in the air at least five times.
On Tuesday, Jackson apologized for the fight, saying he was "happy to be alive." His comments came hours after police arrested another man on several charges in connection with the fight.
The other charges against Jackson are disorderly conduct and battery, prosecutor Carl Brizzi said. Jackson was expected to turn himself in Wednesday or Thursday, prosecutors said. The felony count carries a prison term of six months to three years.
The teammates involved are Jamaal Tinsley, Marquis Daniels and Jimmie Hunter.
The Pacers did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.
Police on Tuesday arrested Deon Willford, 23, on felony counts of criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license for the fight.
Willford drove a car that hit Jackson, sending him tumbling over the hood, police Sgt. Matthew Mount said. Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air in apparent self-defense during the fight about 3 a.m. Friday.
Jackson returned to training camp Tuesday with stitches in his lip and scrapes and bruises.

Won't be fooled again by Stephen Jackson version of 'truth'

By Gregg Doyel
CBS SportsLine.com National Columnist

The story has changed regarding Stephen Jackson's latest night of wholesome fun, and as you might expect, the new story makes Stephen Jackson look awful.

To fully appreciate the new story, though, you must have a firm grasp on the old story, the one Jackson told police last week after a 3 a.m. incident outside an Indianapolis strip club.

The old story, as it was related by Jackson:

Jackson and three teammates with the Indiana Pacers were confronted by another group of men. An argument ensued, and Jackson was punched in the mouth, then hit by a car, getting popped onto the hood. Jackson pulled out a legally registered handgun and fired shots into the air to scare off his assailants, then went to a hospital, where he had his face stitched up.

Jackson, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard who averaged 16.4 points per game last season, was too injured to play in the Pacers' first exhibition Wednesday night.

Police called Jackson a victim. That was their word: victim.

Then the story changed. More facts came to light. And when it comes to Jackson and cockroaches of his ilk, more light is almost always going to be a bad thing.

Here's the crux of the new story, as related by police:

Remember that part about the driver attacking Jackson with a car? Well, that really did happen. Only, police say, the driver attacked him to stop Jackson from kicking the driver's cousin ... who was on the ground ... and physically handicapped.

Jackson was charged Wednesday afternoon with multiple criminal counts, including felony criminal recklessness and misdemeanor battery. No one's calling him a victim anymore.

I'm furious, but not at Stephen Jackson. He is what he is, which is to say, a bad human being. I'm furious at me for believing in Jackson in the first place.

See, this isn't the column you were supposed to read. I had another one written earlier Wednesday, and that column pointed out that while Jackson has been an idiot in the past and might be an idiot in the future, in this specific case the facts suggest he is a victim -- not the bad guy he was being called by media all over the country.

That was my original story. But, like Jackson's story from the strip club, it fell apart.

See, Jackson is what he is, and shame on any of us -- me -- for forgetting that for even one day. We all remember the Pacers-Pistons brawl from Nov. 19, 2004. One of the most grotesque sights in sports history came that night when Jackson ran into the crowd at The Palace and began indiscriminately throwing punches.

Ron Artest was given the season-long suspension for going into the crowd first, but it was Jackson -- suspended 30 games -- who looked completely deranged. Artest was wrong, but in his (meager) defense he felt provoked after being hit with a cup. Jackson? He saw an opportunity to attack a fan, and he took it. Nothing more, nothing less.

The suspension, the negative publicity, none of it humbled Jackson. Shortly after returning, he was suspended for another game for verbally abusing an official. He bickered publicly with coaches and teammates. Last season he was fined $20,000 for making an obscene gesture after being ejected from a game.

And still, based on the original story as related by Jackson and repeated by police, I wanted to believe him after the incident outside the strip club. But bad things happen when you believe a liar -- and Jackson is a liar. His original story, that he was punched in the mouth? He took it back. Jackson has since told police that nobody punched him.

One of the men in the anti-Pacers group, Quentin Willford, is described as having short arms and deformed hands. He's the man who was on the ground, getting stomped and beaten, when Jackson walked up and gave him a kick, drew his gun and fired shots in the air. That's when Deon Willford drove into Jackson with his car.

The Willford cousins aren't model citizens. They have arrests on their record, including Quentin's conviction for dealing cocaine. But those are the people Stephen Jackson was brawling with outside a strip club at 3 a.m. If there had been a physically handicapped Good Samaritan whose *** needed a good kicking, Jackson might have obliged. But the Willfords were there. And the police, frankly, seem to believe the Willfords.

Me? I don't know what to believe, or whom to believe in. But I know whom not to believe.

Yesterday I was ready to give Stephen Jackson the benefit of the doubt.

Today, and for the rest of my life, I won't make that mistake again.

Ouch.

Considering Jackson's previous behaviour I think he does not deserve another slap on the wrist. He should serve at least the minimum 6 months.

Good riddance.

As Warhawk pointed out, it can happen, It's actually one of the things they covered when I took my hunters safety course. (wow, that was awhile back) It's one of the reasons they tell you to keep a loaded gun pointed down and never point it in the air.

Prophie you hunt? For the love of Zeus say it aint so.

I retract any and all comments I may have made in Jackson's defense, on the assumption that the later reports and resulting actions against Jackson are founded.

What a slime...

I feel badly for the Pacers fans. This has to be a real kick in the stomach for them.

funny how things suddenlly change and there were so easy and obvious to begin with

not unless you count beer and soda cans. ;) Since there were guns in the house, my parents required that we take the course before we were allowed to handle one. I have to say it was definitely a great idea, I did and do have respect of a deadly weapon.

Something I can't say for a lot of kids these days. EDUCATE!!

back on topic: Jackson is an idiot. I really feel for Pacer fans.

Ditto on all that.

PacersDigest, my absolute favorite non-Kings site, is really depressing. As some of them had said, here they were finally hoping to be able to talk about the coming season without the carryover of the brawl, Artest, etc. and then this happens.

My hopes for the Pacers in the East just went up. Their fans deserve it.

I feel the same way VF21. Their fans deserve better and hopefully they'll get it.

Who will be their new shooting guard now that their current "shooting" (all pun intended) guard is going away for a while?

Stephen Jackson and the Police Report
in The Links by Lang Whitaker, NBA, Columnists, Feature Too

by Lang Whitaker
Yesterday in Indianapolis, Stephen Jackson was charged for his part in the strip club/gunshot mess from earlier in the week. With these charges, the police also released the police report for the entire incident, which the Indy Star has posted on their website here. They also have the audio of the 911 call that started the whole thing, which is worth listening to if only to hear the woman who called the report in describe Stephen Jackson as being “at least six feet tall.” You think?
Anyway, I spent the last hour combing through the police report. Below is the Cliff’s Note version of the police report.
1) Page One really just sets the scene. It also reminded me that had Stephen Jackson not fired a gun into the air five times, the police probably wouldn’t have been called — they were only there to respond to a call that someone was shooting a gun into the air. So without the gunshots, there’s a good chance we never even would have heard about all of this. Which makes me wonder: How much other stuff goes on that we never even hear about?
2) Jimmie Hunter was rolling with Stephen Jackson that night. (Trying to get in good with the vets?) Jamaal Tinsley was in a black SUV with someone else that hasn’t been identified.
3) Stephen Jackson “immediately” told the cops he had fired the shots and that he had a handgun with a valid Indiana license.
4) Jamaal Tinsley told the police that he had a gun in his car. He gave an officer the keys to his car and told the police that they could retrieve the gun. And wouldn’t you know it? While getting out the gun, and officer found a bag of “suspected” marijuana in the door’s pocket.
6) They also mention stopping Marquis Daniels in a white Bentley, but that’s the only time he’s mentioned.
7) One of the detectives talked to a guy who works in the club. This guy says there wasn’t any altercation inside the club, but there was a fight in the back parking lot. This dutiful employee tried to break it up but it “escalated.” He ends his appearance in the police report by saying he heard an engine, a thump and then observed a tall black male on the ground. “He then heard gunshots.”
8) Ah, Stephen Jackson himself. They read him his rights, he waived them. He agreed that nothing happened inside the club, but allows that the person who ran him over with the car might have “felt disrespected” because the Pacers crew ignored the driver while they were in the club. SJ left the club with Snap Hunter.
9) Here’s where it gets all surreal. Jackson says outside the club he was approached by “a small black male with a handicapped short arm.” This guy had one hand “in the back of his pants.” (The police don’t clarify, but I’m assuming it wasn’t his “handicapped short arm” behind him.) Weirder, SJ tells the police this little guy was yelling, “Dump!” over and over. Jackson thought this meant to shoot, and he started yelling back at the guy, and somehow this escalated until SJ got punched in the mouth by a “short stocky” guy. But isn’t everyone going to be short to Stephen Jackson?
10) Jackson says he had his handgun on him while all of this was happening, but he never mentions having gone to his car. So was he strapped the entire night?
11) Jackson and the short stocky guy fight. Then the guy hops into a car and drives it at Stephen, “which threw him over the vehicle and onto the ground.” He squeezed off four or five shots, Snap Hunter helped him up and then Snap threw the gun into SJ’s car.
12) The police interview Tinsley. His first name is spelled “Jamall” throughout the document. Not a lot of Pacers fans in the police department.
13) JT says they were in the club and someone ordered them drinks, but he doesn’t say who. Then, and this might be my favorite sentence of the year, “a black male with handcappied short arms started yelling about being a pimp and saying none of the Pacers have $500.”
14) No, I don’t know what “handcappied short arms” are either.
15) Tinsley says there was beef with the short guy and the stocky guy inside the club, because those two guys were causing problems with the dancers the Pacers had paid for. Tinsley agrees that the short guy was yelling out in the parking lot and had his hand in his waistband. He heard the gunshots but didn’t know where they came from.
16) Snap Hunter, your turn. He tells the exact same story as Jackson, and adds that he saw Jackson get hit by the car. Next!
17) Marquise Daniels was actually parked across the street from the other guys, and from across the street he saw a fight broke out and he saw Jackson get hit by the car. He was, however, “unsure if he heard any gunshots.” That’s it for Marquise Daniels — he’s never mentoined again.
18) Next comes the club’s DJ, who’s story is slightly different: He heard gunshots and came to the front door, where he “observed a handicapped black man being thrown to the ground and kicked.” He then saw Jackson get hit by the car and then heard more gunshots after that.
19) The police found a few bullets and tire marks, and the club’s video apparently shows Jackson being thrown from the car after being hit. That’s gotta hit YouTube soon.
20) After all this they take another statement from Jackson and this time they taped it. Jackson tells the same story again, this time slipping in that he did run to his car and grap his gun before the fight started. The fight started, and he now says he never got punched. He does allow that “he did kick the male with the handicapped arm when he was on the ground.” Man.
21) Jackson said he fired a gun into the air a few times to break up the fight, he got run over by the car, and then he fired a few more times.
22) I really like that Stephen was able to describe the car by one important detail: It had 26-inch wheels. He’s sure of that.
23) One day later they take statements from Daniels, Hunter, Tinsley and Tinsley’s friend. Guess who says the marijuana belongs to him. Go ahead…take a guess…right! The one guy who isn’t an NBA player. Sure is lucky for those guys. Whew!
24) Two days later, the police got a tip that the two suspects were in an apartment complex. They go over there and catch the guys, who turn out to be cousins, both with the last name Willford. The cops take ‘em in.
25) The guy they call Dino, who must be the stocky one, tells his side. He says nothing happened in the club, and then once they were outside all the Pacers Crew surrounded his cousin (who must be the guy with the handicapped arm). He says he saw the Pacers crew beating up his cousin, then heard gunshots. He jumped in his car and on the way out drove over the guy who was firing the gun. Apparently he left his cousin there to get beat up.
26) His cousin, who appears to be the guy with the handicapped arm, goes next. This must be Fingers. Fingers says he was leaving the club and trying to talk to a woman when Stephen Jackson came up to him and started yelling at him and waiving a gun around. He then fired into the air. Next thing Fingers knew, a bunch of guys had him on the ground and were kicking him. He looked up and saw Dino driving away. (Thanks, cuz.) He then — and this is great — says he got up and walked over to a pay phone, where he called a cab. Just like that it was over?
27) And that’s about it for the police report. They mention going to Dino’s Mom’s house and impounding the car, and then it ends.

He is/was an idiot, but jail time is not the answer. These antiquated laws need to be done with, cos it's not bloody working. You savvy.

Throw him out of the league for a year, without pay, and see how that works.

But this is not the league matter. Sure Detroit brawl was, but this incidentis him getting into trouble with law on his own, outside the league's jurisdiction. Until convicted they have no way of suspending him.

His deserves jail time at least for his probation violation. He should be treated like everyone else.

Jail time is something that he might not be able to avoid. However, If convicted, I'm not so sure he would get more than a few months with a misdemeanour charge. Most probably he'll back to his old ways. The Pacers need to take action and strip away from him what is most dearly to him. I think that will be much more effective. This is ofcourse assuming the latest story about him is true.
