KINGS PICK UP OPTIONS ON GARCIA AND DOUBY

SACRAMENTO, CA ---- The Sacramento Kings today exercised their options on the contracts of third-year swingman Francisco Garcia and second-year guard Quincy Douby. The Kings also made qualifying offers to restricted free agents Ronnie Price (guard) and Justin Williams

This is great news, all of their hustle is starting to pay off. I hope we see a lot more PT from all of them this year

Certainly not surprising in the case of Garcia/Douby. Happy to see they made qualifying offers to Price and Williams.

man this is good news we're headed in the right direction:rolleyes:

Yah, would have been nice to let both of our first round draft picks go.. And two end of the bench players that are cheap.. I would rather pay a guy 4 million to sit at the end of the bench rather than 500,000...

Hey, we have one very classy bench. It should be worth 4 million to pay someone to sit there.;) :p

These were all pretty much no brainers I would think. At worst its a cheap way to fill up the end of your bench, and in a rebuilding situation you have a time to take a look at these sorts of young marginal guys and see if any of them are actually gems.

P.S. I didn't actually realize that Justin was going to be restricted. That takes all the guesswork out of a contract for him. Offer him a min deal or whatnot for a couple of years, and then let him go see if somebody on the market actually wants to beat that. If they do, ou can still match. Good situation to be in there, and no reason now for him not to be back unless somebody out there is pretty high on him after his 2 week little burst there.

Yes, I would think these are all no brainers and puts us in a good position for the future with all of them. The most important part of this for me was that they took care of these quickly. Now, on to bigger and better things.

What I hope they are working on, is getting Martin signed to a contract extension this summer. The sooner the better.

That can wait for a little while. I am hoping that they are working the phones trying to make a trade or 2 and then of course draft well. Martin extension can wait until the end of summer and even if he is not given one its not the end of the world as he would be a restricted FA.

Having said that I think we will offer him as extension and hopefully he accepts.

i have a feeling quincy douby is going to be a bust. he just was not and is not nba ready.

neither was Martin his first year.

That means little for a guy like Douby other than that we cannot know for sure. All the soon to be out of the league scrubs looked bad in year 1 too, but 90% look bad in yr 2, yr 3, and then end up in Europe.

Because Quincy is a scorer, I suspect at some point here he is going to be able to put up at least passable numbers. But with his defeiciencies in size (at OG) and game (at PG) I think there will be a real question even when he does if he's helping you to win -- he is a walking mismatch...against you, and you're always going to be fighting his weaknesses. I could see him scoring 11ppg and you still losing ground when he was in there because he wasn't making others better form the point, or because other OGs were just going over and through him at the OG and you were having to distort your whole defense to cover his lack of physicality. Look at Kobe's body, now look at Douby's.

Its not over yet to be sure. he should be able to put up some points in spots at least. But 6'3" 175lb OGs are problematic unless they are very very special. Or take big leaps forward in their ability to run the team from the point over the summer of course.

Do you think he can improve his play making skills enough to be that Bobby Jackson type off the bench?!

He would be a nice size for a combo guard in terms of height and he has the physical attributes to be a good defender as a PG.

No idea, one of the reasons why I have not written him off. I saw him play a little more at Rutgers than maybe did some, but otherwise...working off the same evidence (scant) as everybody else.

One thing I think is a hindrance is that he and Price are kind of competing for the same role.

Hey I thought competion was good, you know brinign out the best in boh palyers etc... Seriously in this case the competition for the min might bring out the best in these guys. I have no idea what Douby's work ethic is like but from all acount Price works hard and the evidence seemed to indicate that it has been paying off.

Restricted free agency exists only on a limited basis. It is allowed following the fourth year of rookie "scale" contracts for first-round draft picks (see question number 41). It is also allowed for all veteran free agents who have been in the league three or fewer seasons. However, a first round draft pick becomes an unrestricted free agent following his second or third season if his team does not exercise its option to extend the player's rookie scale contract for the next season. All other free agency is limited to unrestricted free agency.

In order to make their free agent a restricted free agent, a team must submit a qualifying offer to the player by June 30. The amount of the qualifying offer for players on rookie "scale" contracts is based on the player's draft position (see question number 41). The qualifying offer for all other players must be for 125% of the player's previous salary, or the player's minimum salary (see question number 11) plus $175,000, whichever is greater. The qualifying offer must be for one season. A player can elect to accept his qualifying offer (the qualifying offer must be accepted by March 1) and play the following season under its terms. This is sometimes done in order to become an unrestricted free agent the following summer (see question number 38).

Supposedly Douby's work ethic is very strong, too. The young players GP has picked up the last 2-3 years, seem to have that in common, besides seemingly all being good character guys.

My apologies for getting this back on topic ( :p )

But....

Woohoo!!! Youth movement! Even if we lose (and we will haha) the kids should give us some exciting highlight reel material when they are out there! Yay for finally rebuilding this mess! :)

When he actually got to play last year he did pretty well defensively. He has a 6'9'' wingspan that he used to shut down Sam Cassel in that win against the Clippers. I know he's not a playmaker but a lot of PGs(BJax, Chauncey Billups, etc) take a while to develop their passing skills anyway. He just needs to add some strength IMO. I think he'll end up being a 25 MPG guy off the bench giving us something like 11/3 with good D though.

edit: Also think this is a sign we're going with a youth movement and that Bibby will be moved. He's taking up Douby/Price minutes and IMO if Price wasn't going to get a chance than Geoff would let him go to some place where he would get a chance.

There is no way in hell that Price is a starter in this league. Let alone a starter at PG!

Signing both would have nothing to do with Bibby but more to do with us not wanting to bleed talent.

I do agree with Brick that Douby and Price are pretty much fighting for the same thing. Both are undersized SGs that want to be combo guards off the bench. If anyone is competing for each others minutes its Price and Douby. Bibby has nothing to do with it. Even if Bibby is shipped out Price or Douby won't be the starters at PG regardless.
